  1. The only season of Mauer's career that I'm seeing that was worse than what ZiPS is projecting was his Hindenburg-like 2011. If Vegas set the over/under for Mauer's offensive numbers at what they are here, I'd bet my house on the over.
  2. Even at a minor league price, Kubel seems kind of redundant with Arcia, Doumit, and Willingham around.
  3. I stopped reading after I saw they had Mauer's BA at .292.
  4. I'm glad he's been cleared, but I've heard this before, and sometimes shortly before a torn ligament.
  5. Any change that improves player safety I think is a good one. And I wouldn't use the term that you do. It's been trending that way forever, BTW. If you think that the game is too soft, maybe we should take away the batting helmets, catchers' gear, and the barriers in front of the dugout.
  6. I don't agree with a lot of the rule changes that MLB has in the works, but I support this one. I'm thinking of the 2008 game 163 where Griffey Jr. gunned down Cuddyer at the plate by a mile, and Cuddy still leveled AJ anyways. Not that I think Cuddyer is a dirty player, as this rule wasn't in effect, but there's no reason for that kind of collision.
  7. Pics or it didn't happen.
  8. Brewers fans that I've spoken to around the time of the Hardy-Gomez trade. You don't have to take my word for it.
  9. Actually he had the same reputation when he was with the Brewers.
  10. JJ Hardy had the same rap on him, and now he's the love we lost.
  11. Drew has a .681 career OPS versus lefties. Florimon has a .601 career OPS.... total. Any way you slice it, Drew is an upgrade. Fairness in conversation, I'm not a fan of Florimon.
  12. I don't think this article is aimed squarely at Bill Smith at all. "This is not purely an indictment of Bill Smith. The Twins employ a vast network of scouts and other talent evaluators, front office personnel who should have had contingency plans in place for the 2007 offseason long before Smith ascended to general manager. The Twins’ long-standing player development philosophies—strike-throwing pitchers with limited upside; speedy, slap-hitting middle infielders in the mold of a traditional no. 2 hitter—left them predisposed to misjudge the talent in front of them." It does seem to indicate that the bottom dropped out when Smith took the helm, which I disagree with. The stage had been set before TR stepped down. It doesn't, however, claim the Twins problems are magically fixed now that TR is back in the saddle.
  13. I can't imagine it happening in Seattle, either. That's kind of why it's such a big story.
  14. Without ever seeing Doumit try it, I am 100% sure that Doumit at third base would be an unmitigated disaster. Plouffe would look like Brooks Robinson comparatively. We're talking about a guy who's uncomfortable playing first base.
  15. If he doesn't want to catch, he's not worth the Twins keeping around, and he also diminishes his own trade value, if he had any.
  16. I'd be interested in seeing a study of pitcher size and how it correlates to longevity. My guess is you can probably find many examples of really big pitchers who fell apart physically, and small pitchers who had long careers. As for Berrios, you have to assume he's a starter until he shows he can't handle it. He's not really that small anyway, and has room to grow.
  17. Correia outperformed expectations, no doubt. He took the ball, provided innings, stayed healthy and pitched pretty well. Since he was the #1 acquisition, it would seem that TR never planned on rolling out a competitive rotation in 2013.
  18. That's the nature of the beast. When you're a price-taker on the free agent market for pitchers like the Twins, you're going to have to overpay some. I'm not in love with Nolasco but in more than one way this is a step in the right direction.
  19. Maddux, Glavine, Biggio, Thomas, Piazza, and Bagwell all should go in IMO. Bonds and Clemens should be shoe-ins but for the PED thing, so we'll see where that goes.
  20. For me it's not so much about stats, although I wish that the FAs the Twins make offers to weren't so frequently "buy-low, bounce back" candidates. If the Twins sign Pelfrey again, I'd be bothered that their offseason plan seems to be to re-up and reward the same cast of characters that contributed to the pitiful 2013 team (Gardenhire, Anderson, and Pelfrey).
  21. Look at those names the Royals had in their rotation, though. Francis, Chen, Hochevar, Duffy, etc.... the Royals needed better starters and they never gave Crow a spot there. Why would they be trying to trade him now if he could be a good starter? I have to think they know Crow better than we do.
  22. I know the Royals have long been a dysfunctional organization, but I trust that they have enough good baseball minds that when they choose not to have Crow start they probably have a good reason or two. It's not like the Royals had a rockstar abundance-of-riches rotation. If Crow could have helped the team by starting, he probably would have.
  23. This is true, but you're assuming the Twins will spend every available dime on pitching. Even if they were willing to sign pitchers until they reach their budget, which they probably aren't, there's likely to be some extra money around to improve other areas.
  24. I think the Twins could use another catcher because I'm not sold on Pinto yet and I don't want Doumit catching at all. The length of contract Saltalamacchia will get gives me some pause. The money the Twins might spend on a catcher shouldn't get in the way of their search for pitching.
  25. There's no reason the Twins shouldn't be going after a veteran catcher to either split time for Pinto or take over for him in case he goes all Chris Parmelee. The Twins have plenty of money to supplement the rotation and sign a catcher.
