  1. I think this is hugely misunderstood. I don't know what the other ownership regimes they worked under were like, but I think people mischaracterize the Pohalds. Let me start by saying I loathe what the Pohlads stand for in many ways. Since the next generation took over, however, they have made it clear that they are not "baseball people", and say it regularly in front of staff and even fans. They always delegated the responsibility of payroll to Terry Ryan or Billy Smith, who were running the team under the mindset Carl ran the team on, when they were far less profitable. They continue to delegate all responsibility to their new regime, and that regime says they spend whenever asked on infrastructure and development (I asked this directly of them at a STH meeting). The problem with them is that they don't exude a desire to win to the fans. When the people they delegate to are budget conscious, it makes them look bad, and they have literally zero PR skills as an organization outside of cheesy feel good marketing campaigns.
  2. My strongest memory, and it's only that, was the rain delay TV spot when he was in the minor league system that made a number of references to him crushing balls like no one had ever seen, or some similar statement.
  3. Can I sell without fees? Will I have a market as reliable as StubHub? I sell around 45 games a year at $60/ticket, so these are meaningful dollars if this is a legit market.
  4. This is well said. To think it's a black and white issue where some fans can't decide they are done supporting him is closed minded.
  5. If I recall correctly, though, losses early in the season don't count as much as they do later in the season.
  6. A great night of baseball, and a great story. I'll admit it immediately made me recall the Anthony Swarzak debut as the second coming of Cy Young. I hope this is different, but baseball can be cruel.
  7. I think "splash" might be a bit of a strong word.
  8. It doesn't. My point is that signing a free agent or two is not what will make them serious contenders. Developing their system is, and they know it, which I'm far more grateful for than any free agent acquisition they might make right now.
  9. I haven't read every post, but the amount of traffic here being dedicated to this one signing shows just how low the bar is in Twins Territory. Falvine is making a good PR move here, but they need to focus on developing a system, not signinf free agents, and they know it.
  10. Give the team another bad attendance season and it sounds like a great reason to do a promotion. Also 2020 will be the ten year anniversary of the ballpark, certainly worth celebrating with a promotion!!
  11. Does Mauer get a spot in the Twins HOF? I don't recall if the articles included that or not. Wouldn't that be a lower honor that would come first, as there are more members of the team HOF than retired numbers?
  12. This strikes me as a sad attempt to create a marketing draw in a down attendance season. It's a bit fast, isn't it?
  13. Coaching is all about accumulating service years to qualify for the MLB pension plan. Heard second hand straight from the mouth of a former Twins coaching staff member. The coaches are generally tied to the manager, so they hope that manager has a job somewhere for enough years to get them a full pension.
  14. If one of the objectives is to mix up the bullpen, I'd have to think the bullpen coach job may be up for a change. I'm not advocating one way or another, it's just the reality of baseball.
  15. I heard somewhere they have software that simulates game situations and the outcomes of situations based on how the candidate responds, creating other game situations. Just an example of a specific tidbit I heard once somewhere. No source.
  16. So much this. I find it pretty hard to stand up and cheer when he hits a home run. DFA him and move on from this waste of time; I don't care how many home runs he hits.
  17. Remarkably, ownership hasn't come up in this thread at all, and I think it is at least a minor, if not equal factor in the disfunction so far. The current ownership assumed the operation just as baseball evolved in a big way and got much more complicated than it was when Terry Ryan could pick guys with the eye test and make good decisions. As the industry was moving to a systematic, technology and mathematical based industry, the Pohlads took over as "non-baseball" owners. They relied on the "baseball people" to make good decisions. In a sense, I think they continue to do this to a fault, which can make them hard to work for. There is a sense that they want to conserve money, but I'm not sure they ever actually say it. I would be genuinely interested in whether they have told the new regime what they want, and what they expect, or if they just say "we trust you guys; you've blown us away already with how much more you know about baseball than we do." In a sense, they have handcuffed the new guys between reading between the "culture" and the "desire to win" completely on their own without giving them enough clear direction on where they are willing to make trade-offs. They certainly don't speak on behalf of the team publicly, which does them no favors as owners. Also as others have said the outperformance in 2017 screwed up what should have been the beginning of a true rebuild. TLDR; I think there may well be a culture problem, which starts at the top, and I'm not sure it's ever easily resolved under this ownership group.
  18. They are finally getting to do what Billy Smith and Terry Ryan should have started in 2011. Unfortunately the team over-performed last year, which screwed up the PR of starting a proper rebuild. It's still too early to confirm they are properly committed to rebuilding, but the early indication says they are.
  19. Does this mean those of us that were suggesting Sano's efforts were less than disarable a few weeks ago can go back to doing so without getting warning messages from mods? Not really sarcasm.
  20. With the passage of time the tone on dumping Sano after the alleged assault sure has softened here.
  21. So far I would say they have been "competent", but I'm not willing to give them much beyond that. They are just doing what was pretty obvious that needed to be done while the prior regime sat stuck in the "Twins Way." Shrewd would imply that they have somehow done something that no one was expecting, and superior to other orgs, and at this point I don't see enough to substantiate that. Sorry, but the OP is going to be favorable to the FO, and this sentence that we are dwelling on was just another example of that.
