Matt Wallner Will Be Just Fine
tony&rodney replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I find the comments on Wallner interesting, particularly those that trumpet him as a top 20 or better outfielder. This makes me wonder how valuable another team sees Big Matt. While I have zero idea how front offices view a player like Wallner, I did wonder if Pittsburgh would trade Bubba Chandler in an exchange for Matt. FWIW, I don't believe Falvey will move Wallner, which means those who think highly of Big Matt are in line with the organizational thinking.- 31 replies

Problems in society. They are everywhere. Hard to fathom that an agent could not have been persuasive enough to convince a very young man (supposedly under 21 when he met the girl) to be aware of the world. Then again, our country elected a convicted felon guilty of sexual crimes. Best to just enjoy the baseball. Franco is young enough to learn hopefully and move forward in a manner where he avoids poor decisions. He can make a useful life for himself in the DR. From the comments by the tribunal it appears he escaped jail only because there was substantial evidence of entrapment and blackmail. Franco still should have used the head with brains to make better decisions. Ultimately he is responsible for his behavior. Most, but not all, people are.

Why do I not trust Philadelphia position player prospects? Duran should return a top prospect if the Twins deal him. Duran seems like the type of pitcher to remain healthy and effective with only occasional bouts of wildness. I'm wondering what the ceiling is on a return for either of Duran or Jax.

Dan Hayes has pretty much explained that Correa is very unlikely to be going anywhere until his contract has expired. Correa bought a house, his family likes Minnesota in the summer, and he feels comfortable. Why would Correa want to uproot his family? Maybe he could be enticed to waive his NTC but even then the Twins would not receive anything in return as far as players. They would have a reduction in salary paid out. Lastly, until such time as Kaelen Culpepper is ready, the Twins do not have anyone else to play shortstop. Brooks Lee can make all the plays very capably on balls hit to him, but he has no range and is much slower than Correa. At shortstop those missed ground balls add up and the Twins are already among the worst teams at turning batted balls into out. I'm going to suggest that we all just learn to love Carlos Correa because he will be playing for the Twins for a while. I'm not opposed to Correa playing for a different team, I just don't see it. Rocco? He and Falvey are a package deal.

Do you believe any team would take on Correa's contract at all, even without sending a player to the Twins? Also, Bryce Eldridge would cost the Twins Joe Ryan plus.

Appreciate actual suggestions. #1. San Fran would want the same return for Eldridge as the Twins would for Walker Jenkins. This one I actually know. Love to have a smooth first baseman though. How about Joe Ryan and Charlee Soto for Nick Kurtz. #2. The Cubs may do this trade and it is pretty fair. I would wonder if Paddack, Castro, and a milb sp from A ball would be enough for Alcantara. Make an attempt to entice Arizona to send Jordan Lawler in return for Jhoan Duran and Bader with the Twins paying for Bader's salary. #3. I like this, but the Cards say no. #4. The Brewers have better pitchers in the minors. Try asking if they will exchange Jeferson Quero for Brooks Lee. Sadly, the Padres are watching their cash drawer more closely these days. Correa is ours until his contract expires. With a couple of more moves, the Twins could be in business. In reality, the Twins front office loves the current roster so things will stay the same unless July is worse than June.

Sure hope Lewis is allowed a full ramp up and healing this time around. Let Royce get comfortable catching and throwing the ball, swinging the bat as if he intends to hit, and running the bases at full speed. Last time around he was an automatic out for the Saints, couldn't field his position when he was out there, and jogged so slowly there were immediate questions from the opponent's announcers. If Royce is fully healed and gets a couple of weeks in, he could be ready to play in two weeks or so.

To be fair the Twins were a potential division winner in the same fashion that every single team is optimistic in Spring Training. Go Whie Sox. Realism suggested a potential to find a path to a playoff spot. Despite the current tumble, there is still an outside shot the Twins benefit from improved play, luck, and misfortune falling upon various other AL teams which results in a playoff spot for the Twins. Falvey is thinking that anyway. For today, SWR for the win.

I'm hopeful for Wallner too. Sometimes my reactions are a grumpy old man when comparisons with HOF players get made, such as a time when a poster compared a player to Willie Mays. The players work very hard, in my opinion, to find success but baseball is a tough game because so many adjustments must be made all the time. The history of any franchise is full of guys who look promising, get injured too often, and fade away. The plethora of statistics used today can be selected to make a number of players seem more productive than they may be in actuality. Wallner has shown some promise, Twins Daily writers have touted him in various ways, Matt has crushed a few balls, there are stats to make Wallner look handsome, and there is the everyday reality of the struggle against major league pitchers. I found myself saying "C'mon Matt, stay back and drive the ball" ...... "Let's go Matt, make the pitcher come to you" ..... and so forth last night. He is doing the best he can. I hope he comes out of his trance today but he is at least 5-7 years away and 3,000 plate appearances shy of comparisons to certain players. BTW, Brant Alyea was really good in several years of limited at bats.

I would be in favor of ejecting fans who use profanity or constantly scream ridiculous offensive comments that detract from a person's ability to watch the games. I'm pretty done with rude public behavior. People should keep their offensive ideas within their home allowing for stupidity on a comment board where folks can just gloss over and ignore the content, like this comment.

Falvey: Minnesota Twins Are Not Focused On Selling
tony&rodney replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
No idea if any team would make star players available but I would suggest that anyone in the organization can be traded. The A's need pitching. How fast would they run at a thought of Ryan, France, Julien, Charlee Soto, and Joe Ryan for Nick Kurtz idea? The Twins are almost certain to maintain the status quo. When the architect likes the roster, it is unlikely to change. From a standpoint of looking forward it does make sense to revisit all expiring contracts in late July. If the Twins are not above .500 and there is some interest from other teams there should be a willingness to move Paddack, Coulombe, Vazquez, France, Clemens, Bader, and Castro. My idea is that the Twins should offer up anyone and see what type of return is possible. No harm in discussions. -

Random note as I watch the Twins on TV while switching back and forth from Wichita to a couple of MLB games .... Jose Ramirez has had 7 walk off base hits in 8 walk off win plate appearances (graphic on screen). Meanwhile, the Twins are looking for a split in the series. -

Wow. You put Matt Wallner in a list with Harmon, Tony, Rod, Kent, Kirby, Joe, and Justin. All of those players had years where they had plate appearances at, near, or above Wallner's career. Wallner has not, is not, and will never be in any reasonable conversation as close to any of the players you list. It isn't fair to him or to the excellence of those other players to write them together. Brant Alyea, however, is a good comparison and there are others if you know their names. We all hope Wallner gets some hits this year, but please use Brant Alyea and his 1970 OPS+ of 142 if you want to compare similar players.

Thank for doing this. I watch too much minor league baseball and have seen a number of pitchers go 5 innings. Usually there is a pitch count used. My thought is that pitchers can go 90-110 pitches after they are built up. Command and control are still more effective than firing it 98-101 MPH down the middle. Misiorowski throws strikes with multiple pitches on the edges of the zone. Morris is very effective when he keeps the ball out of the middle of the plate too. The lesser pitchers go 3 innings or the prospects get pulled because they are reaching 35 pitches in an inning. I don't believe that baseball has figured out how best to develop pitching. It is a series of trials and errors.

Matt Wallner Will Be Just Fine
tony&rodney replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
BTW or FWIW, a thumb dow is pointless to a comment that has multiple facets. It makes sense to disagree to one or more points but a thumb down on a question doesn't make any sense. It is a real weakness with the site. So, is Skenes a good pitcher?- 31 replies

You are almost certainly correct. However, let us just say that the front office really wanted to find a path to putting a winning team together. In that event, isn't it possible that some other team sees great potential in Wallner and is willing to trade a really good prospect for him? Wallner is pretty much all or nothing. His offense can be fun to watch. Realistically though, he will never be ok on the bases or in the field. I'm hoping that Matt Wallner becomes hugely successful as much as anyone on this site. I also wonder how the Twins will ever be a team to win like teams from 2001-2010 again. I don't have an answer but the current roster cannot defend adequately or create runs. In order to win, the Twins need almost everything to click. It did in May and it will again. Is it sustainable over two months? Last November I saw huge value in moving Wallner. Then again, I believed that November of 2023 was a prime time to trade Edouard Julien and Royce Lewis. I was also willing to trade one of our 3 top starting pitchers for the right deal. I'll keep watching though. FWIW, right now I'm watching Milwaukee use contact, speed, and defense versus Pittsburgh and Paul Skenes. The Brewers are fun to watch. They play smart too. They have not run on Oneill Cruz. If you will recall they ran freely on every Twin.

Matt Wallner Will Be Just Fine
tony&rodney replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We sure hope Wallner stays healthy and begins to hit. Right now he is about the 20th best right fielder in baseball. Baldelli needs to play Wallner every day and find out what he can be as an every day player. Or is he strictly a platoon bat? One thing that may not change is his defense. His reads are worse than they were last year and he has also reverted to a slow exchange from glove to hand. Lately fly balls have been tearing him up but the frequency of those consequential missed outs (due to talent not effort or errors) should diminish. Regular playing time and getting back into a groove should help Big Matt. I like Wallner just fine but should admit that I wanted the Twins to tempt Pittsburgh with an offer of Matt for Bubba Chandler.- 31 replies

I get your point and Pablo is very important to the Twins. While Skubel has been healthy though, the Tigers have had the rough equivalent of Ryan, Ober, Paddack, Woods Richardson, Festa, Sands, Stewart, Jeffers, Lee, Castro, Buxton, and Wallner plus minor reserves spend various stints on the IL. The Tigers have only recently become more healthy. The Detroit position players are almost all back but they are still missing 3 RP and 3 SP. It will not be surprising at all for the Tigers to win 100 games this year. It might be surprising if the Twins win 90 games this year even if they get everyone back and do not have any more injuries.

Injuries occur with every team. The Twins have been healthier than many teams, including Detroit within our division.

Question of the week: what’s the biggest need?
tony&rodney replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I think it is complicated. If in fact the organizations is even remotely open to making any trades, which isn't at all clear if you have heard or read the comments of the team leaders, then every single player should be dangled in hopes of improving the talent on the team. I don't think this is about money. Have an idea of players who may be available. Are these guys talented? What players will cause other teams to engage in serious and mutually beneficial discussions which lead to transactions? I don't have a favorite Twins player. I also am not down on any of the players in the organization. In fact if the status quo is kept, which I expect, bringing Julien back may actually be a thing that helps despite all of his warts. So dispassionately I will identify the position players you want to keep as best fits in the DH position. Because each team is only allowed one DH, ostensibly for the pitcher, a team of Keaschall at 2B, Lewis at 3B, Lee at SS, and Larnach and Wallner as corner outfielders is sheer terror for pitchers. This is, however, acceptable if these guys consistently produce as a top 3 runs scored team in all of baseball. Anything less than that is not an acceptable tradeoff. I don't expect any change at this time.
