  1. Varland has great stuff but he misses center-center way too much. If, hopefully when, Louie stays out of the meat zone on a consistent basis his career will swing up. Another starter who transitioned nicely was Cole Sands. Sure hope Varland is a year long positive contributor this season.
  2. Payton Eeles is 15 months older than Brooks Lee. Lee will play this year as a 24 year old and Eeles at 25. Eeles has similar numbers at AAA to Lee but Payton has more speed. An argument could be made that Eeles was much better in his first go at AAA than Lee. I wonder whether Eeles will get a shot in the Twins organization. He only received a bus ticket (Lee was #1 draft choice, #8 overall for $5.675M) for a bonus so the team has nothing financial tied to him. I feel Lee is a really good prospect still and I do not question his potential, but somehow what Eeles did last year has been overlooked. Is a .419 OBP and a .919 OPS from a guy who doesn't strike out much, runs well, and seems to have a decent glove noteworthy? What is wrong with Eeles?
  3. Carlos Correa wants to play another year in Minnesota. So back to Pablo Lopez ..... The Twins are almost certainly not trading Lopez unless they receive a haul in return. If it is Baltimore, the Twins demand either one of Basallo or Mayo plus Mountcastle. The Orioles then say no. No worries. There are still opportunities if Falvey wants some change.
  4. The Twins’ investment in player salaries for 2025 “will not be further reduced this winter, no matter what their new television partner pays them,” according to a source cited by Phil Miller of the MINNESOTA STAR TRIBUNE. Look, I'm not at all a fan of oligarchs, but the inaccurate bandwagon hate is not healthy nor does it help. It is also not realistic. My comment about wishing the Twins spent more (top 10 or whatever) is merely that - a wish. You are free to think it was whatever. I would like the articles and comments to avoid all mention of the Pohlads, but I guess I probably need to just back away from TD. I don't think this is similar to Oakland (Fisher) or Pittsbugh. I opposed Carl buying the team in 1984, but I'm not still carrying a grudge there. Prefer the discussions on usage, etc.
  5. I did not find any statements or quotes by any Twins officials that used the number $130M. Cots currently has the 2025 40 person year end projected at $141.6M. Fangraphs has the 2025 payroll at $142M. Other sites are around $138M. The Twins have stated that cuts are not being made. Thus, fans have speculated that in order to add payroll, subtractions must meet the additions. Twins Daily used $130M for their roster construction. I will remind you that they actually used $170M for a week last year. We just play around with this stuff and it is entertainment. i don't believe it is fair or decent to continually publish false information about what the Twins have said. I do think it was fair to rant fourteen months ago when the public relations debacle type statements were made. But that was over a year ago. I do think people might consider that falling attendance and the failure of the team's media contract looked like a reason to expect a new payroll of around $110-120M. I prefer $170M, but I'm just a fan.
  6. The Twins do not need to clear his salary. There has never been any statement to that point. Twins Daily and people who comment here have pushed that narrative, partially in order to find a pile of cash to sign a free agent. What free agent do we want? We all want the Twins to have a top twelve payroll. Is that actually a reasonable demand? It is a great wish.
  7. Paddack would be a good swing man in the bullpen. It would also protect his arm and allow the Twins to use the better starting pitchers ahead of him. I would agree with those who suggest using Paddack in the pen and trading him at the deadline if at all, unless the Twins find a suitable, useful transaction before that time. The only decent or interesting right handed bats are available via trade. The cost may be dear and require some additional moves as well. If anything, the demand for Chris Paddack may be increased with the signing of Lorenzen. They are similar pitchers, although I feel Paddack might be better as a high leverage reliever late in the year. As pitchers come off the board a few teams will be left with some shortages in the pitching department. For now, Paddack fits nicely in the bullpen. It would be ridiculous to ignore where Paddack fits on the team just because he has a salary higher than another player. Neither Jax nor Duran makes as much as Paddack and we should not elevate Chris P. to the closer role. Put the players in the best role for success. A quick search will show that the Twins have not made one single comment about cutting payroll nor having a hard number, say $130 million. The only references to payroll from ownership have stated that no cuts will be made. Everyone, everyone who is a fan of the Twins would love a $150-200M payroll. The mandatory false statements in almost every article are detracting from the articles. False statements do that.
  8. The focus of the article was toward a team complete as of early January. It is a competitive team. There are still opportunities for change. One can throw out all sorts of semi-reasonable deals that might benefit both teams, but the Twins front office has to make a decision what is best for their upcoming season. Big questions (unanswerable) complicate any trade possibilities. I really like Matt Wallner but Pittsburgh is desperate for a right fielder. Would a Wallner, Paddack, and Miranda for Jared Jones or Bubba Chandler plus Endy Rodriguez deal help or hurt the Twins? Depends on how the Twins feel about Emmanuel Rodriguez. Baltimore (one or two of Mayo, Basallo, Mountcastle) and San Diego (Cease, Hoeing) remain potential trading partners as well. The maneuvering is tight. For now, the Twins may feel their team is looking good. I'm not sure there would be much interest in a Bregman, Alonso, Santander, or Flaherty even if the Twins could carry a $150-150M payroll. Fit is tricky. If the team isn't set, there are still deals out there.
  9. While I don't disagree with this notion of needing three years, that leaves out quite a few of the Twins team. All of Miranda, Julien, Lewis, Lee, Martin, Larnach, Wallner, and Keirsey Jr. have less than three years of experience from the position side. I can't remember .... was it 1500 plate appearances to know what you have in a player. 500 PA per season for 3 years seems reasonable for when one can have a strong idea on a player.
  10. Most of the people on Twins Daily would like to see the Twins add a player or two to strengthen their roster. The difference between us is in how this is done. A few people believe the Team can sign a fair free agent or two. Others are hoping for a helpful trade or three. Seth has posited the what if - no change. The pitching could be really good. Lopez, Ober, Ryan, Festa, and SWR followed by Matthews, Morris, Raya, and Lewis is youthful but good. Paddack, if kept, could be a very solid swing pitcher. The pen is fine. No doubt the lineup of bats is unsettled and unpredictable. My preference was to improve the defense on the field through a couple of deals. Perhaps a minor improvement can be done by moving a few players. C-Jeffers & Vazquez, 1B-Lewis, 2B-Keaschall or Eeles, 3B-Lee, SS-Correa, 1B/3B/DH-Miranda, 1B/2B/DH-Julien, if/of-Castro, utility-Martin, LF-Rodriguez, CF-Buxton, RF-Wallner, DH/COF-Larnach, OF-Keirsey Jr. Yes, it would be nice to see some change, like a big RH bat but this team looks like a solid 85 win team that can easily be 91 or 79. There are still a couple of months plus left for us to wait out the roster.
  11. Always enjoy seeing these type of lists put together. Agree that Matthews was greeted rudely to MLB, but I'm high on the guy and he seems like a pitcher who will put what he experienced and learned to good use in developing his quiver of pitches.
  12. Beyond the no trade contract, teams are wary of injuries and Correa has high value to the Twins. If he plays 150 games in 2025 and seems to have moved past injuries there will be an entire raft of rumors next offseason. Right now there is not going to be much interest and Carlos remains the Twins only shortstop.
  13. I don't think it is fear. The economics have pinched over half of MLB to a level of spending that is half of the top revenue teams. There are a few teams that are scraping the barrel and should be spending more, such as Miami, Pittsburgh, and the A's. Most of the rest are wondering when those NFL/NBA media deals are arriving. A team like the Mets will make money on Soto because the valuation increase of that team will pay for the entire contract in a year or two, not to mention the increase in ticket sales, ads, media, and other dollars. Things are tight and it isn't just the Twins going through this stretch right now. Teams are forced to be "creative" and this applies to the Twins too. They are not at a disadvantage financially versus two thirds of MLB. We are forced to wait it out and hope for the best from the final roster configuration.
  14. Same reason. One can buy a case of Johnny Walker Blue Label or not for pretty much the same reason.
  15. I would have preferred Juan Soto to Pete Alonso but to each their own wish.
  16. The Dodgers are down to 39 players with the trade of Gavin Lux. Can they put Cartaya back on the 40?
  17. So far this offseason this has more or less been my thought - Falvey has the team he wants. Having said that, I will not be very surprised if a couple of deals are completed. I'm not as down on this collection as some but sure wish defense was a higher priority. Perhaps a key will be whether the Twins give a legitimate look at some younger players. I don't know if someone is ready but a long look in Spring Training might be a ticket for a few guys: Payton Eeles, Luke Keaschall, and Emmanuel Rodriguez. The pitching is always about health and depth. Paddack might be solid in the bullpen. I believe the Twins are better off with Festa as their #4 starting pitcher. Ronny Henriquez? Isn't he out of options? Still time for moves but the squad they have can play.
  18. Any player signed is fine as long as the main innings and plate appearances are still available for individuals rising up through the system such as an Andrew Morris or Luke Keaschall.
  19. The Royals add a fair back end starting pitcher, Michael Lorenzen. I don't believe the Royals, tigers, or Guardians are done adding players.
  20. What is crystal clear is that the Twins need to find some catchers via trades, drafts, or free agency; however/whatever way. The organization is thin at the catching position. The last two years the Twins have slid along with Jeffers and Vazquez. The performance of those two has been largely mediocre but things could be worse. The front office should be seeking out deals for a couple of prospects and despite the reality that catchers play fewer games, an overpay may be in the cards. Ryan Jeffers is aware of the shortage of catchers. He also know his limitations and strengths. My best guess is that he bets on himself unless the Twins offer at least 4/$40M. The Twins though are unlikely to extend anyone at this time unless the player is very good and signs for a team friendly number. The organization is for sale and already has three big contracts in the books.
  21. The book is still out on Simeon but he had a decent year in 2024. I wondered if Paddack, Woods Richardson, and a prospect like Billy Amick (maybe add Kala'i Rosario) could bring back Dylan Cease from San Diego? Earlier in the offseason I wondered whether a SWR for Jeferson Quero deal would work? I'm not down on Simeon at all but really like David Festa and also believe that Zebby Matthews will make the adjustments and tweak his pitches to be a very effective #4-5 starting pitcher.
