  1. Twins fans are pretty well used to losing. It is what it is, a game, a business, something fans are nonetheless passionate about. The losing doesn't bother me. The one thing I don't like is the complete lack of accountability, and the acceptance of incompetence. Those aren't OK when I go to work, nor I think for most people, and so I'm not thrilled that the team I root for is run that way. Watching a team "rebuild" is one thing. Watching their clueless, hopeless management flail around in perpetuity is another. It's not an entertaining spectacle.
  2. Seemingly bizarre and nonsensical comments by Pohlad. The idea that there is nothing Ryan can actually do to fix the "system failure," and also that no other approach would make a difference either . . . I don't even know how to describe his philosophy. Baseball nihilism? Now, I do think part of it is just that he's really bad at giving the dreaded vote of confidence, because that was definitely an aspect of the message. He's not going to make a mid-year change, since that would be pointless, tying into the general theme that ownership is helpless and clueless. Though on that specific issue I agree with him. Bottom line is that Ryan is putting ownership in an untenable position. He is not up to the task and there are significant financial ramifications for the Pohlads. This has been obvious for years, but at some point it will be too much for them to accept anymore.
  3. Walker's defensive problems really limit his potential to carve out an MLB role. His upside was as a platoon corner outfielder... if he can't play corner OF, well, he won't have an MLB career. Even that would have required huge improvement at the plate. Walker's low OBP limits his offensive value - last year he was 6th on his own AA team in RC+.
  4. The Twins bullpen, including Perkins, is a potential problem for the club. That's just reality... discussing it isn't "freaking out."
  5. Looking at expected outcomes, May is probably a win better than Milone as a starter this year . . . not trivial, but also a difference May can partially or even mostly erase with strong performances in high-leverage situations. The problem though is that May has legitimate upside that Milone and some others do not. The Twins need that upside in the rotation, because what they have now isn't good enough to contend.
  6. Ironic comments, pseudo, considering the confidence with which Brock erroneously lectured other posters on their use of the term. The lack of return is certainly where the 'sunk' part comes in. Even in a business context, the phrase is colloquial rather than a term of art. The reason it's not really open to interpretation is that the definition of an incurred cost (which may or may not be 'sunk' in colloquial American usage) is universal, applying to virtually all business activity on the planet.
  7. I'm an attorney and CPA, specializing in fixed assets and accounting methods.
  8. No conditional statement is needed. The contracts are sunk costs... they could be exchanged as part of a transaction, but that transaction will reflect the fact that those costs were sunk (i.e., a team could unload a bad contract by taking on a different bad contract - which only confirms the fact that the cost was sunk).
  9. Brock is flat wrong. Business law and accounting rules are clear that a cost is incurred when a party becomes liable for it, rather than when funds are actually transferred. Any confused posters should google "When is a cost incurred?" to see the correct answer for themselves. A "sunk cost" is a cost that has already been incurred. The phrase has nothing to do with the disbursement of funds, but rather the assumption of a liability. The Twins are liable for Nolasco's contract and therefore it is a sunk cost. Note also that the potential to transfer a liability is irrelevant to whether the cost is "sunk" (i.e., incurred). For instance, companies record Notes Payable as a liability, regardless of the fact those notes may be easily negotiable.
  10. Actually I find losing to be rather dull, especially after all the losses the Twins have piled up in recent seasons. I merely pointed to reality - the Twins weren't actually that good even when their record was. They can't hit and have no bullpen, and only an OK rotation. The tailspin isn't even what concerns me - it's that the Twins are doing a horrible job building up for future seasons. Traded a decent prospect for nothing, May is in the bullpen, Pelfrey hangs around, they've botched Arcia's development, etc. Most posters have this idea that, regardless of what happens for the rest of 2015... 2016, 2017, 2018 look promising. There is very little evidence to support that view, but it is barely challenged on here. My view has been consistent for years: the Twins would bring up enough young talent to be a decent club, but that a poor front office would hold them back. That's exactly what is happening, and I don't see what's wrong with being somewhat frustrated as a fan in light of that.
  11. Hasn't it already been established this year that the final roster decisions are coming from the front office? I didn't realize that was even a question. I like Duffey, but how much has Molitor even seen him this year? Clearly Molitor and Ryan are on the same page about May, I don't question that aspect.
  12. I love how all those posters said it was almost impossible to finish under .500 given where the Twins were at around their season peak. I assured them it was very possible.
  13. May was a good starter this year. The Twins don't realize it and neither do some fans. Oh well.
  14. I love all the reasons people on here just make up out of thin air to justify their frequent mistakes, when its usually the same reason - the Twins have a broken front office.
  15. I would rather he stood pat than give away a borderline top 10 organizational prospect for nothing. Just the idea of Ryan making trades in general is a scary proposition... To many of his counterparts are vastly better at their job than he is.
  16. Davis wasn't a good starter. May was. Rather important difference. There's also no evidence May will be among the elite relievers in baseball.
  17. I'm impressed already.
  18. Maybe the Twins should move Gibson to the bullpen. That would certainly strengthen it.
  19. When there is an open rotation slot, and May doesn't get it, then it is about May. It's ludicrous to suggest that Duffey, completely unproven, is more worthy than a guy with demonstrated MLB success. And I'm a big fan of Duffey. But May should not have been removed from the rotation and keeping him in the bullpen is grossly incompetent.
  20. Good starters are more valuable than good relievers. Another fact obvious to pretty much every club except the Twins.
  21. Good point, after all Duffey is coming off pitching a whole 2 innings.
  22. The Twins have moved pitchers to the bullpen and back numerous times over the years. That explanation makes no sense. The more likely explanation is that the Twins are so ignorant that they don't realize May is good. They've already implied as much.
  23. Hu was a borderline top 10 prospect in the Twins system. It is straightforward incompetence that he was dealt for a replacement level, or slightly above reliever. Ryan was yet again fleeced by someone much smarter than him.
  24. Is there something I'm missing here? How does May not even get considered? This isn't just a spot start, since Milone will miss a few starts at least.
