Front Page: Twins Acquire RHP Sam Dyson from Giants

I typically don't spend much time thinking about the teams listed on a NTC. It's primarily a leverage tool these days.- 206 replies

Front Page: 2019 MLB Trade Deadline Review
Riverbrian replied to Cooper Carlson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Brodie Van Wagenen and Farhan Zaidi are going to be fly's in the traditional front office ointment. Unless they are going to submit a QO to Wheeler. I'm not sure why he is still on the roster. Frazier? Surely someone offered something and something is better than nothing. The Giants simultaneously moved a chunk of the bullpen while acquiring a pretty good rental with Scooter, keeping the expiring contracts of Bumgarner and Smith during a time they are in contention, old and light on the farm. -
Front Page: Twins Acquire RHP Sam Dyson from Giants

I'm going to stay consistent. I've been saying all year... the front office can acquire and roster anybody they like with no complaint from me. I'm out of the "Sign the players I personally like" business. The front office has the data, the scouts and the full time jobs to pay attention to what they are specifically looking for. I will only be watching how the players perform and how they are deployed based upon on how they perform. On that front... I've been happy with how they have managed the roster. Only one slight concern... they stayed with Morin too long. That roster spot could have been used on someone with more growth potential. Bring on August... let's see what happens. I'll decide how I feel about the trade deadline later.- 206 replies

I think there has been an obvious shift. The prospects have clearly more value than years past. And rightly so... because 22 year old 600K players are out performing the 10 million dollar players in their 30's fairly frequently. Younger players are getting more opportunity these days as a result and they are proving themselves.- 206 replies

Not two years ago tho... This way you avoid a clear recognizable pattern. -
I wonder who took the Diplan phone call. With an hour left on the clock... I'm hoping that Falvey or Lavine are not spending time wrapping up the Diplan deal.

Angry wouldn't be the right word for me. Disappointed would be appropriate. I have no idea what is happening on those telephone calls but I try to imagine being on the other end of the line. If I'm the GM of the other team and the Twins are calling me about player X. I'm going to ask for the top of the prospects. The Twins have Lewis, Kiriloff, Graterol and I'm going to ask for them. Maybe player X is Larnach value but I'm going to ask for higher because I know the Twins have better. However, other teams that call me, may not have a Lewis or Kiriloff type talent to ask for. So the top of that pile is more in line with the value of player X and I can't hold out for more because there isn't more, besides seeing if the Twins or Astros cave with those really high end guys. In a nutshell, weather I'm right or wrong, I can see a scenario where the Twins can be handicapped in this process because they have better players available to ask and hold out for, when other teams may not. I wouldn't be angry because I can imagine a lot of things at play but yeah... Disappointed for sure. They need to support this team and we had a cannonball roll through the bullpen in July.

Once a trade is complete. The team trading the player can no longer take phone calls in an attempt to get a better package in return. In order to convince the team to stop taking phone calls... you have to provide them a reason to stop taking the phone calls by offering a package that they want or believe can't be eclipsed. Of course it's an overpay. An overpay is what it takes. We have improved our bullpen.

I think we tend to spend too much time discussing hard or soft schedule. The hardness or softness of schedule is a moving target. Play the Tigers while you are playing like crap... They will sweep you. Play the Giants while they are winning everything and they will sweep you. The Padre fans were probably pretty excited to see the Giants on the schedule around the first of July. In hindsight... not so much. That was about the time the Giants got on a month long roll. I'll leave assessing the schedule strength to others and look at them skeptically each time they try. What the Indians, Giants and Cardinals are doing right now is pretty damn impressive. Let's see who looks pretty damn impressive in August. I don't know who it will be but it will probably be three different teams.

In the trade being discussed. The Pirates traded major league ready players. It’s a no brainer that the Twins will give up prospects for major league talent but the dynamic changes when you trade major league ready talent for major league ready talent. The Pirates had two players in hand that immediately out performed the player they got back. This is an assessment problem. The GM screwed up big time. They would have been better off last year, today and tomorrow by not making that trade for an incremental potential increase. For prospects... they still got miles of land mines to survive before they contribute one inch at the MLB level and you won’t weaken your current team trying to improve it. In this case they thought Archer was better then Glasnow... they were wrong. They had 3 OF’ers and thought they could afford to lose Meadows... they were wrong. And they threw in a decent prospect to boot. This happened because the Rays didn’t need to trade Archer. For this year... See Boyd.
-
Tampa didn't have to trade Archer. He could have been dealt in the off-season. As a matter of fact. Tampa was actually in contention when they made the deal. Pittsburgh had to pay a high price or it wasn't going to happen. How do you avoid this from happening? You can't if you really really want the player but understanding leverage and what side of that leverage you are on, helps.

Interesting with Stashek. My guess was they would be reluctant to promote to the 40 man to keep room for trade additions. But the need is critical now. As for the market prices... no idea just guesses on my behalf but I always assume there is a reason it gets busy on the final couple of days. I always imagine that this is the time the Twins call the Jays about Stroman. The Jays say Royce Lewis. So the Twins call the Tigers about Boyd and the Tigers say Royce Lewis while the Jays field a call from the Astros and they say Tucker and then the Astro’s call the Tigers and they say Tucker. Neither team wants to pay that price so they all take phone calls make phone calls and wait for the prices to get reasonable and that probably happens once the clock gets close to killing the game. So I think we will have to wait unless we are willing to meet an exorbitant ask. But... I have no idea... I’ve never been in the room.

I think it’s more of a “C’mon May we need you” message to May. The message that he sends to the front office is “I don’t want to use Stewart” and he was all I had left. The dangerous part of this... who do they send down for another arm and will that arm be trusted and who would that be? If Arraez gets sent down because he is the guy with options to provide an emergency arm that Baldelli also don’t trust. You’ve weakened the offense and gained very little. A trade for pitching couldn’t happen soon enough but if you pull the trigger now. There will probably be an overpay involved because everyone is working every room at the moment waiting for a team to get desperate. We are going to have to ride it out.

This is what I've been talking about for quite some time. A manager needs trust in his entire bullpen. Lack of trust for Stewart probably forced him to ride May for 49 pitches. When a manager starts doing that... you got a problem.

Whenever I find myself wanting to be mad at Trevor May or any player for that matter. I first consider what I'd think if I was a fan of the opposite team at that moment. I imagine I wouldn't be thinking "HA HA May... what a whatever". When Arraez and Adrianza and Kepler came through in the 9th... I'm thinking way to go, coming through in clutch, like that. If I was an A's Fan... Hendriks you *#&)@. Both teams are competing... it produces a roller coaster when it's done right and that's why I love baseball.

If it’s close to the ground he may have made the assumption that it was going to hit the ground.m and it just didn’t. But again... it wasn’t perfect base running regardless. And I’ve seen quite a bit not perfect base running. Teaching moments all over the place.

I’m trying to recall from memory but wasn’t the ball caught close to the ground. If that’s the case, it excusable. Not perfect base running but excusable. But I admit that I don’t know if the contact play was on. Arraez in the “not hit” by a batter pick off. That’s a teaching moment for the 22 year old. Let the umpire make the call and stop for breakfast as he walks to 3B. If he is advancing on a what he thought was a passed ball... then he got picked plain and simple.

Fully agree that we need additional high leverage options. But I personally don’t worry if Rogers throws 5 innings. It’s only an issue because we need more high leverage guys. Which is close to what you are saying... other than the 5 inning part.

In the year 2017 Between August 26 and September 10th. The Los Angeles Dodgers produced one win while losing 16 games. Do some of our Twinsdaily members forget they have been on a roller coaster every single year with every single team... every single time? Or do some just like to remain unprepared for it and scream at the top of their lungs on every drop of the rollercoaster ride?
