June is already wrong, as Ober goes on the IL and Buxton can't play CF. Now they have to play the considerably superior White Sox. The pitching staff is coming apart. Zebbie is reverting to Zebbie-dom -- can get through four innings without disaster. Is Abel EVER coming back?

Royce Lewis Needs to Have an Open Mind
Mahoning replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
First base if he earns it. An athletic first baseman is an asset. -
It's amazing that a 29-year-old career minor leaguer whom nobody wanted has made himself a useful (at least by Twins' standards) major-leaguer. Baseball is the only sport where such a thing is possible. Whoever thought that you'd rather see Kody Clemens come to the plate than Royce Lewis or Matt Wallner?
-
Before the season started I commented that if the Twins had both Outman and Kreidler on the roster -- two guys who've proven they can't hit -- it would be proof they'd given up. Yet here they are and, at least for the moment, they mark an improvement. Against the likes of the Marlins, they can play -- which, alas, Wallner and Lewis cannot. Remember when Royce was going to be OUR Bryce Harper?

It sure isn't pretty. You have Keaschall, Larnach, Jeffers, and Lee giving their all; even Gray and Clemens chip in; Bradley and Ryan (?) and Prelipp pitching well; Buxton still with ONE hit with runners in scoring position, Bell and Caritini doing OK, and then a bunch of guys no other team wants. The good players are going to get worn down.

Nationals 15, Twins 2: This One Was Ugly
Mahoning replied to Cory Moen's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Wallner has had two good games in a row; opposite field extra base hits in both. Could it be that he has figured something out? And then there's Royce Lewis . . . hitting .167. What must be going through his mind?- 46 replies

The Twins' Pitching Philosophy Is at War With Itself
Mahoning replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I don't see how you can say they are developing starters when no AAA pitcher is permitted to go more than five innings. I'd say, rather, that EVERYONE is groomed to be a reliever. The Twins' approach seems to be that the most important thing for building stamina is rest, lots and lots of rest. Taj Bradley, developed by Tampa, routinely goes over 100 pitches. NO Twins-developed pitcher gets near that number.- 36 replies

Will Tristan Gray Take (Part of) Brooks Lee's Job?
Mahoning replied to Ray Stuedemann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Gray came up twice with the bases loaded and put the ball in play both times. That makes him the Twins' best hitter so far this season; no one else has come close to doing that. -
Outman has proved that the only thing he can do with a bat is swing and miss.

Plausible. But if they use a six-man rotation, and nobody goes more than five innings per game, which is the Twins's pattern, then the bullpen is going to be worked VERY heavily. No lead (should they get any) will be safe. Will there be a designated seat on the Blue Line for AAA pitchers filling in at Target Field? Because they'll need a pitching staff of fourteen.

Why the Twins Shouldn't Replace Pablo Lopez
Mahoning replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This argument is, "Send them out there to take their lumps," and it is a plausible one, as long as two or three of them don't also need surgery, and Bailey Ober gets some velocity back. It seems at odds with Tom Pohlad's pronouncement that they intend to compete this season. If Ober continues his regression, then you have Ryan, Woods-Richardson (whom I like), and then three of the four -- Abel, Bradley, Matthews, and Festa -- have to prove they are for real. That is a lot of hoping. Meanwhile, Zach Littell, who pitched 186 innings last year, would, presumably, be a lot cheaper than Giolito.- 39 replies

Plouffe is the best of the ex-players on the broadcasts -- the most fun. Tom Pohlad says he wants to earn trust, but he doesn't want to talk about the payroll. And there is a problem. We are told the low payroll is a necessity, but of course the books are closed, so we are required to take this on faith. That's simply not good enough. You want us to believe? Open the books. As Ronald Reagan used to like to say, "Trust . . . but verify."

3 Must-Watch Twins Pitchers in Spring Training

Tom Pohlad is Saying a Lot, and None of It Lines Up
Mahoning replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
One of the greatest baseball quotes of all time is Tom Pohlad's confession that when they reduced the payroll after a winning season they failed to consider both the short-term AND the long-term consequences. -
The Twins have been training their starters to go short for years, so the bullpen has to be ready to go at least four innings every game. That puts maximum stress on an overmatched group. Zebby has to go to the bullpen and probably one other youngster. Then the Twins have to let them learn by doing, with predictable failures along the way. Joe Ryan will have smoke coming out of his ears.

Everyone is so down on Larnach. In 2025 the Twins had THREE players with 60 or more RBI, and Larnach was the third. What player on the current roster do you have confidence can drive in 60 or more next season? The honest answer is one: Byron Buxton. The other over 60 is another player everyone loves to hate, Brooks Lee. SOMEBODY on the team needs to be able to bring a runner in from second now and then.

What possible point could there be in keeping him at AAA? To hold onto James Outman? If the Twins need Outman they're utterly lost. Nobody else in baseball wants him.
