Minnesota Twins 2021 MLB Draft Recap
twinkiesfan11 replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Has anyone read or heard of any assignments to the 2021 draft picks or that most will be shut down? Obviously a lot has changed with the reduction in teams, later draft, etc. Just seems like you'd start seeing some of these names showing up in box scores by now.- 38 replies

Yeah - I'm running with the assumption that Miranda, Ryan and Moran are on the active roster by the end of the season so it's more like 7 prospects to me. I have a hard time giving up on Javier quite yet, he's just lost so much development time and there are so few legitimate shortstops in the organization right now. I don't disagree that using a 40 man roster spot on him is kind of a waste either, just glad I'm not in the position to actually have to make that decision!

Barring any trades I’d protect (referencing your chart): - 40 Man locks: 17 - Prospect Locks: 6 - Notable Rule V: 6 - Less Notable Rule V: (Vallimont, Javier, Palacios, Moran) 4 - Middling veteran/prospect: (Rooker, Gant, Stashak, Thorpe) 4 - Fringe Prospect: (Gordon, Jax) 2 Leaves one spot for the rule v draft. This means Rijo, Funderberk and Maciel are exposed to the rule v draft. Also allowing everyone from the likely gone plus Refsnyder, Cave, Astudillo, Smeltzer, Garcia, Coulombe, Burrows and Garza DFA’d.

I was just thinking the same at first glance but it's hard to nitpick over the number 20-30 prospects in any system, just comes down to how you evaluate their stats and scouting profiles and how you weigh projection vs production. I do agree with other posters that I don't consider Nick Gordon a prospect and am very down on Aaron Sabato (and wasn't a fan of the pick at the time). Overall I can see the justification placing this group over the 26-30 group but other than Varland I find this group less interesting than the 26-30 group.

This seems like a pretty damned solid #26-30. Admittedly biased but the depth of this system still seems to be a major strength.

This is a fun topic, a positive outcome from an otherwise lost season. Picking in the top 5-10 is exciting enough but having 3 picks in the top 40-50 should really provide a jolt to the talent pipeline. If I had to pick a couple of targets nearly a year out I'd be focused on high upside high school hitters that project to be strong defenders at premium positions. The college hitters don't look all that exciting presently but a lot could and probably will change over the next year. Elijah Green obviously if he somehow fell to them but at this point that looks unlikely. Andruw Jones Jr. followed by Temarr Johnson and Jayson Jones in that order would probably be my targets.

How confident are you in the FO to turn this around?
twinkiesfan11 replied to cHawk's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for another season. There are several of the first wave of arms drafted and/or mostly developed by this administration on the cusp of call up. The jury is still out on notable early position player draft picks Rooker, Larnach and Jeffers but they'll all get plenty of opportunity to play the rest of 2021. Royce Lewis would probably be right there with them if it weren't for an oblique injury followed by a pandemic followed by a freak accident. The track record with free agent signings and fringe prospects on the margins is really frustrating and needs to be addressed as these trends have been present for the majority of their tenure. The offense really nosedived in 2020 but seems to be in better shape in 2021. Pitching at the major league level was exceptional in 2020 and a train wreck in 2021. The inconsistency is odd and and can only partially be explained away by injuries. Adjustments need to be made from the top down but there do seem to be reasons to be optimistic about the future. -
What are you excited to see for the remainder of the season?
twinkiesfan11 replied to wsnydes's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Excited to see Ober, Jax and Barnes continue to get some innings and hoping to see Winder, Balazovic, Moran, Cano, Hamilton get a little run before the season is over. Also really hoping to see Miranda up before the end of the year. It's time to evaluate anyone who is on or will need to be on the 40 man roster. -
Four Players the Twins Could Trade This Winter
twinkiesfan11 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Seems like Buxton is the only player listed that is likely to have a significant market this winter, if he comes back healthy and avoids the IL the rest of the year. Donaldson and Kepler apparently didn’t generate a lot of interest at the trade deadline and Rogers may be done for the year. All seem like better candidates to keep around in an effort to either remain competitive or rebuild value for trades next summer. It feels like they should make another push to extend Buxton. He’s probably the only potential superstar in the entire organization at this point. That being said, If they can’t work out a deal they should absolutely pursue a trade in the winter. Hate to be cynical but if he’s not under contract I wouldn’t want him in the opening day roster, too much risk of another lengthy injury and losing him for nothing or close to it.- 43 replies

I'm not criticizing the FO for trading Berrios, if my post came off that way it was either unintentional or you're reading into something that isn't there. Check my posts from last week, I was in favor of trading Berrios, Buxton, Donaldson, Maeda and anyone else that could return value. I don't see any way this team is competitive in 2022 with or without Berrios and all the others that were or could have been traded. With that in mind I don't see the point in signing a big ticket free agent pitcher as this article suggests. Maeda and Pineda should provide some stability and possible trade assets at the 2022 deadline, then roll with the prospects to see what you have. I don't see competitive baseball in 2023 being out of the question which would make a big FA signing next offseason make more sense. Berrios would be a great target both from a productivity and feel good/fan perspective.

Intriguing list but guessing the Twins will be aiming a little lower than this for 2022. Why trade Berrios if they are willing to invest heavily in veteran pitching? Reading the signs I'd assume they retain Pineda and roll with a rotation fronted by Maeda, Pineda with maybe a low cost upside gamble or token washed up innings eating veteran followed by a patchwork of Dobnak, Ober, Jax, Barnes, Balazovich, Winder, Ryan, Strotman, Sands, Duran and Canterino if they're healthy. It seems unlikely the Twins will seriously be competitive in 2022 with or without Buxton so might as well give the young guys a chance to see what they have to work with for 2023 and beyond. Maybe re-sign Berrios in 2023? That'd be neat

Trade Deadline: GM For A Day
twinkiesfan11 replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Love the 40 man roster considerations in your plan. One of the many hard lessons this FO needs to take from this disaster of a year is that they have done a very poor job scouting internally. I would hope to see a philosophy change going forward favoring keeping the protection fringe prospects over fringe veterans for the Rule V draft. Akil Badoo and Tyler Wells as recent examples wouldn't have saved this mess of a season but would have definitely been some bright spots to provide hope for better days ahead. In hindsight losing them both for nothing so Jake Cave, Shaun Anderson and others could remain on the roster is inexcusable.- 66 replies

Pohlad: Twins "Absolutely Not" Having a Firesale
twinkiesfan11 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I'd argue that this administration should get a bit of a pass on the SP development due to the timing of COVID relative to the development cycle of most of the top SP prospects. Had 2020 been a normal season Balazovich, Duran, Chambers (looked a lot more promising a year ago), possibly even Sands, Canterino, Enlow and Winder could have debuted late 2020 or early 2021. It sure appears that these developmental delays necessitated the Happ and Shoemaker signings. The point is that it's not like the well is dry, there is strong depth of SP talent in the organization and close to major league ready aside from some 2021 injury setbacks. Same goes for Kirilloff, Larnach and honestly Lewis as well. All three could have potentially reached the majors in 2020 resulting in a lot more certainty both short-term and long-term on the roster. Regarding keys to contention, I disagree with a lot of what you propose. I believe if this team is to be competitive in 2022 and 2023 it is absolutely critical to retain both Buxton and Berrios. There is no way in my opinion that trading either will return high enough level talent that will be impactful at the major league level in the next two years to offset the production Buxton and Berrios would theoretically provide. I really feel strongly that it's an either/or scenario, either get them both re-signed and continue building around them or tear it all down and rebuild with an eye toward probably 2024. -
Jim Bowden Twins/Padres trade proposal
twinkiesfan11 replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Weathers + one of Gore/Abrams/Hassell + Rosario or Mears + Probably a lotto ticket like Medina or Acosta could be interesting. Any Berrios + Rogers to Padres trade that doesn't return one of Gore/Abrams/Hassell would seem like a fail. I'm no expert though so who knows? -
Voted Unsure. There have been lots of glowing reports about the infrastructure this FO has put in place and all of the highly respected individuals they've hired at various levels. Putting the right people, culture and processes in place are the keys to success in any organization and prior to 2021 there were tangible signs of all those good things. It's hard to do but important to not let this disaster of a season sway overall opinion of performance too much. I see two routes to salvaging this FO's legacy. 1. Work out deals to keep Buxton and Berrios WHILE surrounding them with a talented and competitive team. 2. Swallow pride, make the tough decisions and blow this team up while there are still a lot of valuable pieces to trade. The worst outcome in my opinion would be minor trades at the deadline, fielding another middling team in 2022 and losing Buxton and Berrios to free agency. That would be a fireable offense IMO

All indications are that there have been multiple years of fruitless and challenging extension negotiations with Buxton and Berrios. These are the two most important players on this roster, besides these two the best hitter was a 41 year old DH followed by an injury prone 35 year old 3B. The rest of the starting rotation is aging, injury prone and underperforming. 2020 couldn't have come at a worse time stunting the growth of upper level prospects that the Twins clearly were planning to be contributing as soon as late 2020 (Lewis, Kirilloff, Larnach, Balazovich, Duran, etc). The delayed arrival of key prospects combined with aging of key veterans and underperformance/injuries to others seems to necessitate a reset. This is the epitome of a crossroads situation, If Falvey and Levine are confident they can get deals done with Buxton and Berrios re-signed I'm sure there would be a strategy in place to re-load to compete again in 2022 and 2023. If they don't think they can get it done they absolutely need to blow this roster up and maximize the return while a lot of these players are still highly valued by other teams, especially with the CBA up in the air. This is an opportunity to either lock up two potential franchise players or re-load for a hopefully quick rebuild and return to competitive baseball with a new generation of players.

MLBTR: Twins setting sky-high price on Berríos
twinkiesfan11 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Ok - wrong term, I wonder if Buxton rejecting an extension would trigger selling off on the current veteran core and a full rebuild. Agreed with Brock also, not likely all moving at the deadline. -
MLBTR: Twins setting sky-high price on Berríos
twinkiesfan11 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Honestly based on the press leaks over the past few weeks it feels like the following is taking place. Apologies for not tracking down sources for all of these but appears most have likely read them. 1. Twins are trying to extend Byron Buxton. 2. Twins decision on Berrios may somewhat depend on Buxton? Berrios’s most recent statement didn’t sound like an offer had been made recently? Pohlad stated that there is plenty of budget for both. 3. The Twins seem to be trying to move Josh Donaldson but sounds like are willing to eat contract/seeking prospect capital. Is he a problem in the clubhouse or just doesn’t fit their revised anticipated window? 4. They seem to be actively shopping all expiring contracts. I can’t help but wonder if the FO’s feeling and approach to all of this is that if they have accepted that Berrios is going to free agency no matter what and cannot be counted on/should assume will be gone beyond 2022. If Buxton rejects the extension offer this team will likely not be competitive in 2023 and 2022 is even a stretch with Berrios and Buxton still aboard. Could Buxton rejecting an extension set off a fairly major fire sale including all of the expiring players, Buxton, Berrios, Donaldson, Maeda, Rogers, Kepler, etc? -
The Trade Deadline - Who Stays, Who Goes?
twinkiesfan11 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I think a focus of the re-load effort should be on replacing some players with extensive injury histories with players that have historically been more durable. I love Arraez as much as anyone but his knees are a ticking time bomb and he doesn't seem to be durable enough to be an everyday player or athletic enough to be an asset anywhere defensively. If the Twins are approached with a strong offer for him they should absolutely give it strong consideration, especially with the positional depth in the organization as you've pointed out. -
