  1. Excellent point, here's my quick count of the number of prospects on this list so far from teams that have been consistently picking around or later than the Twins. (Working from home today and not feeling productive) Rays: - RHP: 3 - LHP: 3 - RP: 1 - C: 0 Rangers: - RHP: 3 - LHP: 1 - RP: 2 - C: 2 Yankees: - RHP: 1 - LHP: 1 - C: 3 Red Sox: - RHP: 3 - LHP: 2 - RP: 2 - C: 2 Phillies: - RHP: 2 - LHP: 1 - RP: 1 - C: 1
  2. Never said I've given up on them, but you can't deny that so far they've all fallen short of expectations given their respective draft positions. Gibson should be fine...as long as he fully recovers from TJ surguryBashore is going to be very old for his league in 2012 and has a lot to proveGutierrez has been awfully brittle, and hasn't demonstrated enough control to be successful at the Major League levelWaldrop should consider himself lucky if he can have a brief career as an MLB middle reliever, frankly with his inability to strike anyone out he seems a lot more like a AAAA reliever to me.I hope all of these guys pull it off and have great careers, I'm just being what I feel is realistic. I also fully realize that prospects, especially pitching prospects have a very high attrition rate. It just really sucks that the Twins have had such a long stretch of not being able to draft/sign and develop anything more than middle relievers and role players for so long.
  3. Nope, you're right (I've got the e-edition subscription). Herrmann doesn't show up in the top 25 catchers list, that's a deeper list than I pictured off the top of my head and I suppose being new to the position affects his ranking a bit. So as you pointed out, 1 guy out of 160 opportunities and that one guy has the ceiling of a #3 starter. I'm all about drafting the best player available over of drafting for need but they're really got to address this chasm. I guess the real shame is that so many attempts to address the pitching depth with early picks haven't worked out as hoped (Gibson, Bashore, Hunt, Gutierrez, Tootle, Rainville, Waldrop just to name a few)
  4. I didn't realize they had already released LHP's, RP's and C's, can't find it anywhere on BA's site. I would have assumed at least Herrmann would have made the top 25 for catchers, he really raised his profile in the AFL, is relatively close to the majors and plays a pretty thin position.
  5. http://www.baseballamerica.com/online/prospects/prospect-pulse/2012/2613076.html Started with RHP's today, will be interesting to see how we stack up over the course of this series. Obviously we all know that pitching is not a strong suit of this organization, still pretty depressing to only have one prospect in the bottom half of the top 70. I would assume there will no Twins representation in the LHP segment, adding more salt to the wound. Hopefully this will be addressed in 2012 through the draft, a fully healed Kyle Gibson and continued development of the likes of Salcedo, Boyd, etc.
  6. Giolito, Buxton, Zimmer, Fried or Zunino for me in that order. Giolito isn't quite at the level of Bundy last year but it sounds like his profile is easily as high as Taillon which means the Twins would instantly add a top 50 or better prospect and BADLY needed potential front line starter.
  7. Agreed 100% I commend Terry Ryan for stepping out of the organization's comfort zone with this signing and really hope this one bad experience doesn't dissuade them from making similar moves in the future.
  8. Looks like we need to add Kyle Zimmer from San Francisco to our radar for potential 1-2 picks. From the article he definitely sounds more enticing than Mark Appel. http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/2012/02/san-franciscos-kyle-zimmer-generates-early-draft-buzz/
  9. This years BA Prospect Handbook has a nice new feature that probably sheds some light on Benson ranking over Rosorio, Arcia, etc. They've got a grade for each player's projected ceiling followed by the level of risk that they fail to reach that grade. When you read the summary at the beginning of the book it's pretty clear that BA favors more advanced prospects over rookie league through class a prospects.
  10. Actually I've read quite a few scouting reports that make me believe that Appel is not all that much further along than Giolito in terms of development. It's not like he's proven much in College with the mediocre numbers he's posted. I'm not convinced the ETA would be all that different
  11. Hopefully they draft the best player available through at least round 2. This system needs more premium talent and fewer safe, #3 starters and back end bullpen types. Even if the 2nd best player is yet another outfielder (Buxton), I'd rather they take him than reach for need as there's no guarantee that all of Benson, Hicks, Arcia, etc actually develop into useful players.
  12. I'd be interested to hear from some of the more informed blogger types, but Osterbrock doesn't strike me as a candidate to be considered a "prospect". The ceiling seems way too low and he's been derailed a fair amount by injuries. I guess I tend to favor the higher ceiling/low floor prospects over the alternative which is why I'd expect to see particularly a Felix Jorge, Javy Pimentel or Mauricio Silva have a significant breakout year.
  13. I love having a player in the Twins system with a skill frequently described using words like colossal, monster and enormous
  14. I'm not willing to write Nishioka off entirely yet, he was considered a decent signing at the time and put up some useful enough numbers in spring training last year (small sample I know). I think it's fair to attribute some of the awful play to the culture adjustment, the injury and the god-awful play of the entire team. That being said, I'd prefer to see Nishi start the season in Rochester to get regular playing time. Give him time and reps to improve and the organization an opportunity to prove this signing wasn't a total bust.
  15. I'm excited to follow some of the more recent international signees; Felix Jorge, Yorman Landa, Javier Pimentel, Miguel Gonzalaz and Mauricio Silva. Any chance Jorge or Landa see the GCL this summer or will they more than likely remain in the DSL?
  16. I know it's early but drafting Giolito with the number 2 pick in June would sure be a breath of fresh air. A pitching prospect of that caliber mixed in with a promising group of position player prospects would really be exciting. It was nice to see the middle infield situation make some nice strides in 2011 too, Dozier making himself a prospect, drafting Levi Michael and moving Rosario to 2B (hope it sticks!). Can't wait to follow all of these guys in a couple months!
