  1. Pass, Not a big enough upgrade IMO relative to the commitment it would take. How about focus on Anderson, Meachy, Morrow, Medlen types and then address the bullpen.
  2. Honestly I was surprised with KLaw's paragraph of commentary on Berrios. He draws multiple comparisons to Yordana Ventura in terms of velocity, delivery, size and stuff. Actually even says Berrios' slider is farther along at the same stage. Much more favorable review than I would have expected out of KLaw.
  3. Just wondering if any of the more plugged in Twins Daily posters can provide updates on a couple of notable pitchers out with injuries. Hadn't read anything in a while. Any idea how they're progressing, what type of schedule they're on, etc? Thanks - Chargois - Bard
  4. Nice story, thanks for pointing out some of the many positives. Don't forget about Buxton returning to Action and Sano's positive prognosis as positive headlines. Those are two of the most important storylines to monitor in my opinion. OH! and Nick Burdi has struck out every batter he's retired in his past two appearances!!!
  5. Aiken, Gordon, Jackson, Nola, Rodon, Newcomb, Kolek for me. Rodon seems to have been abused a bit with his college workload. I have nightmares of him being the pick, signing late, being used very sparingly through the end of the year and then blowing out his elbow next spring and not returning until early to mid 2016. Kolek scares me
  6. Quick list of pitchers drafted top 5 who have either busted or failed to live up to expectations IMO 2009: Matt Hobgood 2008: Brian Matusz 2007: Daniel Moskos 2006: Greg Reynolds, Brad Lincoln, arguably Brandon Morrow. Side Note, Andrew Miller also drafted 6th 2005: None Drafted 2004: Phillip Humber, Jeff Niemann, Mark Rogers. Side Note - Jeremy Sowers drafted 6th 2003: Kyle Sleeth, Tim Staufer
  7. And if I had 20 minutes to do the research I could name probably at least a dozen or two high school and college pitchers that were drafted in the top 5 and flopped. Not really sure what your point is...
  8. Think about it though...if the strength of the draft is pitching and position players are more scarce why wouldn't you snap up a guy like Anderson if he's there for you at 46? The pitching in this draft sounds to be deep enough that you can still get some quality pitching in rounds 3, 4 and beyond. Plus look at the current lineup in Cedar Rapids and the prospective lineups in E-Town and GCL. The Twins have drafted very pitching heavy the past 2-3 years and it's starting to show in the low minors rosters. I for one would be thrilled with Gordon at 5 and Anderson at 46.
  9. Except those don't exactly grow on trees either and from all indications most of the top 2014-2015 int'l talent already have prearranged verbal agreements in place. Out of BA's projected top 10 bonus recipients, only one (Christopher Torres) is listed as projected to remain at shortstop and it sounds like he's already locked in with the Yankees. It seems like even in the int'l market true shortstops who project to hit are very rare. Again, not a reason in and of itself to draft Gordon but further reinforces how valuable shortstops are. Assuming The top three pitchers are gone Gordon gets my vote.
  10. Agree to disagree, in my opinion a guy with a ceiling of a top of the order hitter at the most difficult/valuable defensive position on the diamond is every bit as solid of a pick as a guy with the ceiling of middle of the order hitter or the ceiling of #2 pitcher (Note - do any of the top 3 pitchers even profile as #1's?).
  11. Gordon seems like a guy with a decent ceiling thanks to his athleticism, bloodlines, makeup and present skills. Conversely he seems like a guy with a pretty decent floor for a high schooler for all of the same reasons. A shortstop that can hit .255 with some extra base pop, some steals and better than average defense is pretty valuable if for no other reason than because they're so scarce.
  12. I don't see anyone in that list that I'd be upset with. A pitcher would be great since you can never have enough but to me when you have Thorpe and Gonsalves among others not even able to crack a full season rotation due to the depth ahead of them and your Low-A team almost completely devoid of position player prospects, I'm kind of liking the idea of adding an impact position player like Gordon or Jackson. Up the middle prospects are always hard to come by so my vote would be Gordon if he's available. Plus this draft is deep in pitching so there should be a decent pitcher available at 46.
  13. This may be naive, but it doesn't seem to me that there would be quite as much point in smoke screening in the MLB draft as opposed to say the NBA or NFL drafts where trades are allowed. Seems to me that when your slot is fixed you can just focus on the players that are highest rated on your board, sit back and wait your turn. The picks ahead of you are completely out of your control and no one behind you can trade up to steal the player you're targeting. I could definitely see keeping your evaluations close to the vest though, particularly deeper in the draft where you're trying to find those diamonds in the rough that your scouts have been working with.
  14. No way the Cards would do that deal. They're competing for a WS Championship, not looking to bolster an already stacked farm system. They're pushing hard for a 1st division SS, Shelby Miller will go in a trade for Tulo or one of Profar or Andrus, otherwise he's staying put.
  15. I'm 99% positive I remember reading during the Santana tradefest that the Twins were very high on Hughes and even intended to draft him in the Waldrop slot in the 04' draft but were beat to it by the Yankees. Not sure that's relevant anymore but an interesting tidbit.
  16. I'd be thrilled to see the Twins take a chance on Hughes over yet another ground ball specialist. As a fan I just can't stomach another year of watching that garbage. He's demonstrated the ability to pile up some K's which would be pretty valuable in this rotation. If 3 years at $10 million a year would get it done they'd be adding a reasonably priced #4 starter to bridge the gap to and maybe even contribute to the next competitive wave.
  17. I noticed the same, will be curious to see how the GCL roster shakes out. At first glance it appears that there's quite a drop off in terms of position talent in the rookie leagues. Seems like a pretty big change from recent years. Have the Twins over-corrected a bit the past two drafts by going so pitching heavy?
  18. Exactly, these players need to learn to talk American
  19. Their powers combined - The Mighty Morphin Centerfielders
  20. #1 is either Sano or Buxton (Sano for me) in tier 1. Tier 2 for me is Arcia, Gibson, Hicks and Meyer in some order.
  21. Well they're saying Porcello is available as the result of this signing, the Tigers don't seem the type to be averse to trading within the division. There would seem to still be some upside in him, wonder what they'd want?
  22. I think a lot of you are overreacting to this signing. 1. The pitch to contact, soft tossing comments are getting really old. Ryan just traded for three pitchers who don't fit this mold to varying degrees, it's obvious he's trying to find some guys who can strike people out. 2. Whining about the contract is a little premature until we see how the market treats the rest of the available pitching. There have been some bloated ass contracts handed out all winter, this could look somewhat reasonable in another week or two. 3. Blackburn is NOT a better option, he's completely imploded for two years in a row. They can't count on him for anything and any contribution he makes going forward should be considered an unexpected bonus. I'll admit, Kevin Correia was the LAST guy I wanted to see them sign this offseason. But if he's being brought aboard to chew some innings to keep Gibson's innings down and give Hendricks, Meyer and May more time to develop while the team won't be competitive anyway, I'm ok with it. Maybe he'll do well enough to generate some trading deadline interest and TR can flip him for another diamond in the rough C prospect.
  23. My only fear is that he's cheap, has the track record you mentioned, and is also being pursued by the Reds and Dodgers who haven't been afraid to overpay under new ownership. I think he'd be a nice pick up but only at the right price.
  24. For whatever reason, neither of those two are being mentioned with the Twins. Schumaker could be a nice bridge to Hicks and Daniel Santana and then serve as a useful utility player or trade chip after they arrive.
