  1. How about trading for some prospects that can pitch once, rather than just piling up outfielder after outfielder after outfielder...
  2. He wasn't a bench player! Polanco was the Twins most professional hitter. He's a starter and a borderline all-star when healthy. I get it, Julien is going to take over that spot and Polanco is getting older, but he is a top of the order hitter type, not some bench guy only seeing time every once in awhile.
  3. Just no way to defend them. We let go gold(Gray, Maeda, Polanco) and brought back lead(bunch of no name turds that aren't going to help much if at all this year)...
  4. I like Ryan, Paddack and Varland. But in all honesty, after watching Varland and Paddack in the BP at the end of last year/the playoffs. I think they would have been excellent HAMMERS out there had the Twins kept their guys or brought in some others to take up some rotation spots.
  5. The problem is not what they got for Polanco. The problem is they didn't bring in any starting pitching help, yet lost 2 starters that were good to very good last year. They also are apparently banking on Buxton to play CF all year(yeah right). It's fine I guess, it's the Twins, but after all the excitement they had last year after the playoffs, they flat out just told all of their fans, "hey, we aren't going to try again". And are expecting everyone to swallow it right up. We just watched our #3 pitcher yesterday get lit up like a christmas tree. IDK, this season will probably be fine, but I have lowered my expectations back down to the level of chip chair and chance IF we win the division. Rather than how I felt last year at the end of the year which was "next year is going to be our year".
  6. Hasn't he been injured a ton though? Maybe limiting his innings is the way going forward?
  7. I wouldn't. Just don't feel like he will be as effective. Plus you risk him getting hurt. I like having a hammer in the bullpen to come in a throw GAS. He's intimidating when we have a lead. I mean, if he could remain dominant all through his starts if used that way, then it might be worth a try, but having a closer that is as studly as Duran is, is HUGE to a contending team.
  8. Canterino looks like a beauty candidate to pitch late innings out of the bullpen though. That funky delivery is going to get a lot of swing and misses the first time he faces guys IMO.
  9. Don't care if they go out and buy players, but the way they have "come off" this offseason has not shown positive on them. Not sure what they were thinking with this message overall. I would still like to see a trade. I don't think we have enough depth in the rotation, and I'd prefer it be added to the top. Probably not happening at this point as spring training is going already. Maybe they will be looking at a deadline deal. Hope ownership/FO understands that the old "window to compete" is open right now, this is going to be a good team again. To fans it looks cheap to not go for it now with the roster we have.
  10. They might/must be counting on Paddack to replace Gray and Varland to step up also. Personally, I loved the way both of those guys looked in the pen at the end of last year.
  11. I think this is a good return for just Polanco. With Julien and Lee, there wasn't going to be much place for him to play. The swapping his money for a 5th type starter though I don't like, would have been a better trade if he didn't come back in the package IMO. My only deal is that it really doesn't do anything to improve the club for next year. Yes, the top prospect is nice, but if we think the Descalini or whatever his name is is going to replace Sonny Gray, then we are still going backwards. Still need a trade for a rotation arm that slots above Joe Ryan. #2-3 type guy.
  12. This, when he came up, the first thing I noticed after his first dozen or better games was how he made the pitcher throw him a hittable strike, or took a walk. Advanced found some holes in his swing inside the strike zone on fastballs. They exploited this to perfection and he was left with a season and a half of 0-2, 1-2, 2-2 counts and forced to always chase the slider outside. He never figured out how to beat this and since that happened, he was close to an automatic out.
  13. Could be, and I get what you're saying. Giving up some guy that ends up turning into Mr. Super Stud can hurt for quite awhile. Think of it this way though. say Twins went out and signed 2 players to 5/150s. They are in trouble for quite awhile if those guys don't produce, get injured, etc. If you are paying a guy 30 mil, he is in the lineup/rotation almost no matter what. If they trade away Brooks Lee, it will be less than 3 years before his spot as a top prospect is taken by someone else that we either develop, draft, trade for, etc.
  14. Certainly can be done. And I am not saying what I believe is right or wrong, it is just my opinion. More risk though IMO, tossing out big contracts to old guys than it is to trade players, prospects, etc. If it doesn't work out, you are not out money, you are out a good ballplayer. There are new ones everyday being drafted, developed, etc. You can recoup the prospect capital much quicker than you can rid a team of a bad long term contract IMO.
  15. That is where you and I will differ. I am not saying you are wrong, but it is my opinion. Surely the right guys can make it work, I just don't like 3-5 year deals on pitchers past about 31ish years old. I don't have any top targets, that is for the FO to identify, but I am willing to let go of guys like Brooks Lee, SWR, Austin Martin, Kiriloff, Larnach, Wallner, Miranda, etc. Might think twice about Jenkins, Erod, Lee(in the end I would move him though because alot of our infield is set) but anyone else on that list is a no brainer to package if it nets you another Pablo Lopez type. I do NOT for any means move Julien. I understand he can't play defense but he is the best OBP guy on the roster, has pop and is your perfect leadoff hitter. If you had another, he would have alot of value, but right now, I choose to keep him.
  16. Ok, I'll look at it, thanks. Losing fans in small markets doesn't seem to bother either baseball or NCAA football and basketball either. They know who their national brands are, and are happy to see them at the top with their frenzied fanbases watching and paying for whatever they can peddle. $$$ wins as usual.
  17. These are actually exactly the kind of guys I DONT WANT. Washed up older guys that have been 3-5 starters. We don't need to dumpster dive. If you are going after pitching, trade for guys with lightning stuff and profile more towards the top of the heap than bottom. If you are just filling out 4 and 5 starters, do it from within.
  18. Here is the thing. Rarely are good teams made with free agent signings, unless you go hog wild like LA or the Yankees do. The better players to be had are in trades. Generally free agents, are older and have their best years behind them. Basically they are being paid for what they DID, not what they WILL DO. I'm fine with what the Twins have done so far, other than I would have tried a little harder to keep one of Gray or Maeda. Here's to hoping we can find another trade candidate that can come in a be a stud for us. I don't have a ton of faith in our system pitchers. There is really no one at AA or AAA that profiles as anything better than a 4, 5, swingman type guy right now.
  19. That is about it for my post. Sign Ohtani to a ridiculous contract that will pay him until hes dead and now throw the highest contract ever to a pitcher in the span of about 2 weeks. Kind of sick of it. Similar to NIL BS in college football. Sports just aren't as much fun when the outcome is already known. LA, yes, they might not win a WS, but there is no doubt they will win their division or at least be in the playoffs. Baseball, just like every other sport out there besides football, is broken. Garbage.
  20. I'm fine with Twins not signing him. Loved what he did here, but giving out big contracts to guys going into their late 30s isn't what I like to see. IMO, Twins will go the route they have done recently and trade a high end player/prospect for a pitcher that fits into the top 3 of our rotation. That or some redundant pieces for a 3-5 type guy and try to fill the rest with system, etc. Life will go on. Thanks Sonny.
  21. I will put money on it this will be another year that the owners decide to either keep the payroll where is, or increase it. They finally have something here, fan interest is at an all-time high and it's easy to see we have a load of young guys ready to run. This isn't the Carl Pohlad of the past or the Terry Ryan purse string holder Twins. These guys have usually done what they think it takes to win within reason.
  22. I would say this is most likely. And also the smartest thing they could do. AGAIN or system is filling out nicely with position players that look like they are ready or close to ready with pitching that looks at best end of rotation or bullpen type options. I'd love another trade to bring in another #2-3 type starter. If not, I think you might see them sign Mahle back on a prove-it deal and try to fill in with whoever is left of SWR, Varland, Festa, ML signing type guy, etc. I'd love Gray back on a 2-3 year deal, but I don't think paying him a ton and guaranteeing 4-5 years would be a good play at all for the Twins.
  23. I actually thought Rocco did a good job this postseason. I have been down on him in the past, but to me, he proved himself this year. He used his best arms and used them almost to perfection, save the Theilbar appearance in the last game. The way they used some of our starters in the bullpen and saw guy like Varland and Paddack dominate out of the pen in high leverage was awesome. Didn't even give Pagan the chance to screw up a close game, although I thought this year he might be able to do it. I don't care about the Buxton pinch hitting spot, in fact I loved that rather than have someone like Gallo or Luplow there. Was it the right move? I don't know but imagine Target field had Buxton laced a double there or even got on base, we win the game on that momentum for sure. The only 2 things I didn't care for was the generous use of a struggling(hurt we find out) and IMO, bad fielding first baseman in Kiriloff. After Solano made those 2 big plays in their win in Houston, he should have started and played most of the innings there. That and pitching to Alvarez so much. He flat out killed us that series.
  24. Correct. And if you do make contact with balls out of the zone, what happen most of the time? Ground out, fly out, soft contact, foul ball, etc OUTS(most of the time)
  25. I wouldn't be putting blame on anyone, but wanted to mention that Julien and Lewis are both stars. And they both played excellent this postseason, especially for rookies. Royce's one at bat was a killer, but the guy hit 4 stinkin HR in 6 games. Julien took mostly great at bats every time he went up to the plate and was on base alot. This guy has an eye like Joe Mauer but has more power. It will be fun to watch these 2 guys mature, and I will hope we don't see a sophomore slump next season from either of them.
