  1. I agree with alot of your post, but not this part. Talk about opening a hole. On a team that is struggling looking for top end starters, moving our best is the last thing I do. Especially when one can be had by trading our high end prospects.
  2. Correct. And it also likely means he isn't that great of a prospect either. Huge hole in his game somewhere. 25 year old corner outfielders that hit bombs but strikeout, can't play defense, aren't very valuable anyway.
  3. Correct, but value to a team does not just revolve around advanced metrics. Guess what? Hitting that pinch hit HR WAS valuable! Throwing out that guy in Boston, WON a game. Carrying a team with his bat for week stretches DID happen. That stuff doesn't show up in advanced metrics. To act as if those thing are just 1 of 1000 or whatever hits or defensive plays, etc that make up a season full of stats isn't seeing the whole picture either. Joe Mauer was a great example. Just an absolute stat sheet stud! Thing is, I can remember on one hand him having a walk off hit, a game saving play, etc etc. Rosario is a leader of this team. He is also streaky as hell. When he is streaking the right way, he's one of the best around. When it's going the other direction, he looks lost at times. That said, there is NO ONE in the system that will do a better job in his spot right now. No one. Any of these hotshot prospects will take 2-3 years to get acclimated to the league and having someone like Jake Cave take his spot is just foolish. Don't extend him. Go year to year until FA hits and see where you are at. Moving him this year for bullcrap is not worth it. If he's used in a package to get you that 2-3 starter? Fine, I'm all for it. But to trade him just to trade him and make room for guys that haven't even really lit up the minors is foolish.
  4. I'm with you on this one. If they didn't make that trade last year with how HOT the team was and playing great, I don't see if happening next year either. If people haven't figured it out yet, our front office LOVES prospects and specifically LOVES ones that they drafted or traded for. If it were me, I would sign Wheeler and put Lewis and/or Kiriloff on the block. Package them up or use one or the other for a package and bring in the best starter you can find. Syndergaard? Jon Gray? Giolito? Eduardo Rodriguez? Clevinger? Give me that stud. You will never have a chance again with a lineup this young and cheap. We have a young SS that was an All-star last year and is locked up. Corner outfielders are a dime a dozen and we employ 2 good ones with another few looking to break in the next couple years. Why not?
  5. Over pay them. Get them in here. If those are the 2 your team/front office has determined will give you the best chance to win, go to them right away with a big number that fits within your budget and lets not let any of the big boys have their chance at them.
  6. It's the whole, play for division championships attitude. Or the "sustainable competitiveness" mantra. Never take chances, never go all in, always dabble and hope the Yankees go cold one year in the playoffs. I mean, this blueprint actually does make some sense, I will give him that. It likely results in a team competitive enough to win the Central again. But it also likely results in another one and done. Flat out, this team isn't going anywhere unless they add 2 pitchers to their staff that are high end guys capable of winning a playoff game. That or someone like Graterol steps in and is a true shutdown type of guy.
  7. You are right when it comes to close dollars I'm sure. When its another year on a contract though? Or another 10-15 million over another bid? Most times they would take the better deal.
  8. Ordorizzi is a given. He 100% needs to be a Twin. They need to outbid everyone if they have to, in order to keep him. This is more about Odorizzi, then who?
  9. Polaco and Sano? You'd trade your starting left side of your infield, one of which is a great hitter and all star, and the other one has the most power in your organization for a corner outfielder that you only have control of for one year?
  10. I'd take him back. As long as it's in the plan that he is a #4-5 guys and can be demoted or DFAed if he's not working out. I wouldn't sign him to a multi year deal though with that illness hanging over his head. That said, Kyle is a great guy and even if he isn't the best pitcher, he's great in the community, around kids, etc.
  11. False. 100%. If the Twins offer up the highest bid, he would be here. Some of you guys need to quit that line of thinking. The reason we haven't gotten these types of guys in the past has nothing to do with where we are located. It had to do with us being a ways off the top bid that those types signed for.
  12. When I say younger, I mean guys under 28-29 basically with years remaining on their contracts. Syndergaard, Boyd, etc.
  13. I'd take either. I think the play is to sign one of these guys, make sure Odorizi is locked down, offer Pineda a fairly cheap deal and tell him he owes us, then make a trade for a younger arm you think you can slot into the top 3 of your rotation for quite a few years. That way, you would have 5 pitchers ready to go. Of course, Pineda woulnd't be able to throw right away and even when he is, you will have that minor league depth to help out if and when someone gets hurt.
  14. This kind of describes the way I feel. I'm sure others do too. I just don't trust Twins ownership to ever shed the cheap and dumpster diving tendencies that have been around for years and years. Basically, show me you have the seeds to do something significant, and then I will buy all in.
  15. Yep, 70 mill is alot. Let it rip and use up all of the money if you think it can help your club. Play for now for a change. If every there was a time to go after it, it is now. Worse case a few of the guys you sign don't take you anywhere. Well, then they can be moved again in a year or two for more prospects to make up ground in the area you lost a few of your own by not signing, trading, etc.
  16. How does it miss the point though? My point is that, if you are top bidder, you will get them signed more than 75% of the time. I don't believe in this player or that player would take less money to be on the coast, etc. I'm fine with what you suggested by the way. Getting on that second tier early is probably the smartest play. There is realistically very little chance the Twins come away with Cole or Strasburg. They just won't commit the type of money needed to get them here. Make good offers to the best of the rest and let's get them before the Yankees or someone throws stupid money at them. I'm also with you on Ryu. Don't want him unless he would sign a 1-2 year deal, which he wont.
  17. And that is also why when someone comes a callin for one of those prospects and is willing to give up something of value for them, you don't clench them with such a tight fist. I like Rosario and feel he should be kept here until he reaches free agency. That said, he is pretty much Jacque Jones and I kind of feel he should be treated the same way Jacque was. Pay him what he's worth when he's here, but when its time to part way, its time.
  18. I would never give up that kind of ask for Syndergaard. I don't believe that is what it would have taken to get him though. One of those top 2 guys, maybe a guy in that 7-15 range and a throw in lottery pick most likely would have done it IMO. And I am all for those types of trades if they are available. Young pitcher, amazing stuff, controllable for a couple years. To be clear. I also don't trade our very top guys unless the talent you bring back is also high end. Marcus Stroman. Yep, I think beating the offer made that ultimately landed him wouldn't have hurt us too bad. That said, this type of guy isn't someone I'd sell the farm for, and he most definitely is not worth someone of the caliber of any of our top 3 prospects.
  19. I brought up Archer and think he fits that bill. Sonny Gray is another one that could be had in that range. Those are just a few off the top of my head.
  20. The only reason IMO it would make sense to extend Rodgers is to try and buy out his abitration years for less money. I would't though. I feel like there is a much better chance he washes out than he is still a dominant reliever by the time he is into his 30s. Just a feeling... If he is still dominant at the end of arbitration, you can use him as a trade chip that season if needed, make a decision about signing him then.
  21. If Cole's best offer were 6/200 and we offered him 6/225, he'd be ours. It's that simple IMO. I don't think we will get him. But if we are the highest bidder, I'd bet we do. Might not be the best investment towards the end of his deal, but I don't agree that players turn down more money very often to play somewhere they feel the weather is nicer, etc.
  22. Yes, but the roster is flexible year to year as well. We have a bunch of young guys down on the farm, some of them will be used and higher paid players on the MLB roster moved in trades, or let walk in FA as well. What is wrong with going for it for a season or two?
  23. Thanks and I agree with most of what you say as well. I just am not of the belief that there should be players or prospects that are off limits when it comes to improving a team such as this that has a real chance with a roster full of young talented ballplayers. If that means as Ace comes at the hand of trading one of our top 3 guys, then do it as long as you have someone on your MLB roster already manning their position.
  24. Our 5-10 ranked prospects in our system would be worth a fair amount IMO. Packaged up, there is no doubt in my mind they could bring back a player in the mold of Chris Archer, or someone of that stature. I don't believe trading these type of guys is a good idea all the time. Far from it. But when you are in the position the Twins find themselves in now. Young team/lineup on cheap deal, ready to contend, minor league full of talent, I think it's time to use a few of them to add those missing pieces and attempt to take things all the way. Will it be risky? Sure, of course it is. That said, if you see your team as that true contender and have that chance, it only comes around once every 10 years or so as we have seen by following this club. Just go ahead and go for it. If you have to move some of your veterans in a few years to re-stock, then by all means go ahead. The time is now though, the iron is hot. Let's not waste this chance.
  25. What the hell does FV mean? He traded prospects that were way down the depth chart in our system. Wake me up when a difference maker is brought in and "gasp" they have to give up an actual MLB starting level player to get him.
