  1. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking. Spring Training is starting soon. Hell, the regular season is starting soon! Yeah, too bad we couldn't sign Darvish, but I always thought that was very unlikely. But now the Twins DO need to find another "quality" starter --- or two --- and do it ASAP! Of all the names bandied about, Archer would be my first choice, but I'd also be very reluctant to trade away 3 or 4 good prospects for him.
  2. Good article. I like the idea of thinking outside the box, or at least thinking of pitchers that weren't obvious targets. That said, I agree with Mike Sixel; why trade (and give up some good assets) for the type of pitcher you could just as easily sign from the group of free agents that are out there? Even though it wouldn't cost us a Top 10 prospect, I'd rather dip into the free agent pool.
  3. If nothing else, with Brusdar Graterol and Akil Baddoo, the Twins have some of the best player names in the Minors!
  4. That one puzzled me too. I know that Napoli's name has been linked to the Twins during this off-season, but that still seems like speculation at this point. Buy why would he be "trying to lure" Darvish to Minnesota? Maybe there is more to this Levine factor than I thought!
  5. I wouldn't say no to that idea either. I'd still prefer Cobb from that bunch, but having Garcia for a full year wouldn't depress me.
  6. Gotta agree with the love for this feature too. Always a fun read!
  7. I realize that signing pitchers like Cashner and Jimenez aren't going to excite many --- or any --- people out there, but someone in that "lower level" tier of veteran free agents might be able to help solidify the rotation.
  8. Hey, I like the optimism! But yeah, this DOES open the door for another pitcher or two to grab a starter role, it only temporarily. I only hope someone seizes the opportunity and impresses us! Erv who?
  9. Unfortunate news about Santana, but at least it's not an 80 game suspension of something where he'd be gone half the season. But as the poster before me noted, Erv may not be able to contribute effectively as soon as some of us would expect or hope for. So, what to do? Last year the Twins were able to find players like Gee and Colon to fill in temporarily, but that was mid-season. Do we continue to hope for someone like Darvish or start raiding the dumpster now?
  10. Call me nuts, but I've always liked those "ball ball" hitters like Vlad. If I'm a batter and see a pitch that I like, one that I think I can do some damage with, who cares if it's in the strike zone or not? Take a swing and let some magic happen! That said, I also admire the patient batters with a "good eye," the ones who know the strike zone and tend to draw more walks, thus getting on base more often. Why not embrace both "talents" ?
  11. This is slightly off topic to this post, but Mike's post reminded me of the "winning matters" concept that has always puzzled me. Just how much does winning matter? Or more specifically, how much extra money will a team earn if it makes it to the playoffs, or all the way to winning the World Series? Is there a "ballpark" figure for winning a title? Of course there is the prestige and historic value of winning a pennant, but how much extra revenue does making the playoffs mean for the club? And how much extra money do the individual players themselves get?
  12. The White Sox could indeed be the surprise team this year, at least one that could play .500 ball. I don't think they are ready for the playoffs by any means, but I don't think they'll be quite as bad as they were last year. I still can't figure out what's going to happen in Detroit. My guess is that they are cellar dwellers this year, but hey, it's baseball and anything can happen. Which is as it should be!
  13. What, no love for Colon? Seriously, I'm exhausted even thinking about the options at this point. My guess it that they end up signing someone like Garcia or Miley, but honestly I have no idea who will be behind door number three?
  14. The starting rotation as it stands right now is cause for concern. Not much depth or flexibility. Obviously. another "quality" arm in the rotation is needed, but if that fails, the front office needs to get creative and maybe take a flier on one of these "Lesser" names, but one that might put together a decent season like Vargas did for KC last year. But man, let's do it soon. Spring Training is just around the corner!
  15. Still waiting for that Nick Blackburn sighting!
  16. Neither Graterol or Baddoo made any of those lists? Somewhat surprising not to see either player listed at least on one list. Yeah, these lists are all mostly speculation and half-baked "expert" analysis, but the overall picture for the Twins is looking promising, regardless of the fact that some of their most talented prospects didn't even make any of the lists.
  17. Can someone explain or confirm this 11-year "controlled" contract stuff? I never heard of such a thing before!
  18. Man, some fun stuff in that article. Very well researched too! Good to hear that Caleb Thielbar is still pitching, although now with those hated Tigers!
  19. Call me old school, but all these huge contracts and high figures makes my head hurt! Maybe we can talk Jim Kaat into pitching a few innings this year!
  20. I honestly wouldn't be shocked if they picked up Garcia on the cheap. Not an exciting addition, but not one we would regret either.
  21. Hey, I was just going to mention "Big Sexy" ! Don't think he's announced his retirement yet? As long as we aren't talking about a Nick Blackburn comeback, I'll settle for any warm body for a half-season until some of the youngsters are ready.
  22. True, nobody likes a slacker or a player who thinks he's "above" getting advice or putting in more of an effort. I have no idea what the full story could be, I just hope it's not some sort of bad attitude or laziness thing. That said, I'd rather see Buxton keeping some of his energy in "reserve" for the regular season and not going full throttle in spring training. Seeing how he has this tendency to bounce off outfield walls (not to mention the turf) I won't mind seeing him pace himself in February and March.
  23. Fascinating stuff. Thanks for a great article. Man, the draft can be such a crapshoot, huh? All the excitement over a "great" prospect like Dave McCarty, who ended up being such a disappointment. I also remember the Braves drafting Mike Kelly, another "great" college player very high in the draft (number one?) about the same year, and he had an even more unspectacular career. Where's that crystal ball when you need it?
  24. Getting closer to the start of Spring Training and crunch time for putting together a pitching staff. We have all been bombarded with rumors and speculation about the likes of the Twins signing free agents like Darvish, Lynn, or Cobb, or trading for someone like Cole (that idea has been taken) or Archer. But what if the Twins are unable to land any of those pitchers? Is there a Plan B? Or more specifically, are than any other quality starting pitcher available (either as a free agent or by trade) that we might be able to get? I loved the signing of Pineda, even though he won't be much of a factor this year due to his rehab, but are there any other "sleeper" candidates for the rotation that we are overlooking?
  25. A shame that Santana didn't get more votes than Moyer. How many years did Moyer pitch in the majors? More than 20? He was still going well into his 40s, so that was more longevity than actual talent. Hew was certainly a good, reliable pitcher, but not an elite one. Yes, Santana was the superior pitcher, just a shame about the injuries and relatively short career. But man, a third Cy Young award would have been hard to overlook!
