  1. Spring training of 1987 ended up on a low note for me, the Twins having cut two of my favorite players at that time: Mickey Hatcher and Ron Washington. But Gladden was a VERY good addition to the team that year (Hatcher did very well for himself the next year with the Dodgers in their own World Series appearance) The rest, as they say, is history.
  2. So the Rays now have Span AND Carlos Gomez! Seems like too many old outfielders for a team like that, one that is supposedly rebuilding.
  3. I hope Aybar is not actually "competing with Ehire Adrianza" for a utility infield spot. As insurance stashed in AAA or if something weird happens with Sano to start the season, it seems like a safe enough signing. But I'd much prefer to see Adrianza in the main infielder utility role.
  4. Baseball games are being played again! I know it's only spring training, but I'm a box score junkie and once again I can get my daily fix. Ah, life is worth living again! In addition to the Twins' results, I always scan the other box scores too, looking to see how favorite players and/or ex-Twins players are doing. The results of the game between St. Louis and Miami had a couple of fun facts. The winning pitcher for the Marlins was none other than Alex Wimmers. The losing pitcher for the Cardinals? That was ex-Twins outfielder Jordan Schafer, now trying his luck at pitching. The Marlins were also playing J. B. Shuck, a guy the Twins had in camp last year. Anyone notice any other interesting ex-Twins sightings this week?
  5. I was impressed with what Castro gave the Twins last year, both as catcher (and pitch framer!) and hitter. He also seems like someone who can help a young pitcher such as Berrios mature and gain confidence. Garvey, I'm not quite as confident with as the backup. I hope he proves me wrong and thrives in the role this year, but I'd feel more comfortable with a veteran backing up Castro.
  6. I don't understand the reasoning or the motivation behind a move like this, but Chargois is a guy I would hate for the Twins to lose. He looked great 2 years ago.
  7. I'm a member of the Eternally Optimistic Club, so I'm hoping that all those things --- good health, a new team and change of scenery, new pitching coach, good outfielders --- will factor into Odorizzi having a good season. Gotta believe!
  8. Ouch! That may be a bit harsh! I go back and forth on Gordon's potential, and whether or not he is overrated,. But I still have hope that he's going to be a solid, maybe above average, starter for the major league team in the next year or two. This is going to be another key year for him to show what he's got. Just gotta be patient and remember that he's still a bit young.
  9. Good question. I haven't heard many other teams tied to those two "big" names either. Don't know anything about who wants Liriano either, or even if he would be used as a starter or reliever at this point (the Astros were using him only in the bullpen after picking him up late last season). If the cost is right, I wouldn't mind the Twins taking a gamble on him again, but don't think we need any more arms in the bullpen at this point.
  10. I keep hoping the "Falvine" brain-trust knows what it's doing, or at least has some sort of rational plan for getting the Twins to the next stage of the playoffs. Perhaps the most puzzling move so far this off-season was choosing Tyler Kinley in the Rule 5 draft. Will be waiting to see if that pickup amounts to anything remotely impressive.
  11. For some bizarre reason, instead of reading your post as referring to Santana, I had a mental lapse that the player you were talking about was Santiago. Whew! Thankfully, that's not the case!
  12. I add my voice to the chorus: it's hard not to like this trade. Giving up only one player, and a lower level minor league one at that, for Odorizzi seems like a deal that, while maybe not a "steal", heavily favors the Twins, Thumbs up! But hey, maybe Tampa Bay sees something special in Palacios. For their sake, I hope so. If I'm a Tampa Bay fan, I'm scratching my head over his one. Meanwhile, the Twins didn't get an ace, but a durable starter who could end up being an above average addition to the rotation. I just hope his stats in 2018 end up looking more like they did 3 years ago for TB.
  13. Like most posters on this board, this signing feels like a weird one to me. After all the high hopes and trades ideas for an extra arm ... we get this? But, all things considered, I guess it's not such a horrific signing ... if you look at it simply as an insurance policy for the starting rotation to start the season, and/or if you are hoping that the new pitching coach can work some magic with him. Signing him to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training would have been tolerable. I understand that he's not getting a guaranteed contract, but why do we have to sacrifice a spot on the 40-man roster for this guy? Earlier in the decade I might have been excited about signing Sanchez, but now it just feels desperate.
  14. It's revenge for the Tigers "stealing" Pelfrey from us a few years ago!
  15. Actually, this is the sort of move the Twins made just 3-5 years ago. Anyone remember the names among that motley crew of pitchers we used not so long ago? Deduno was probably the best of the lot!
  16. Well... usually, Or that's the way it's always seemed. I'm actually a bit confused by this discussion. It seems like this past off-season we are being told that power (home run hitters) is not as hot a commodity as it used to be.All these big home run hitter are not getting signed so quickly. So, what is going on? I realize "launch angle" is the new hot topic, and most of what Parker wrote makes a lot of sense, but I'm still a bit hazy on what's going on. Is it all ONLY about line drives and power, or what else is factoring into this concept?
  17. I've always been a bit skeptical of Gonsalves and his potential. He doesn't scream "ace", but the more I read about him I'm impressed with his makeup and attitude. Hopefully, he's got a lot more going for him than Milone (yikes!) and is closer to someone like a Greg Maddux who has great control. Let's give him a look-see soon!
  18. Well, the additions to the bullpen were impressive, although the idea of Fernando Rodney as the team's closer still gives me painful intestinal cramps. Still waiting on that A-list starter, Even the lower tier possibilities such as Garcia and Cashner are already off the board. Hmm ... is this Archer trade going to actually happen or is that just another wild rumor? Every day I keep waiting for something positive, but I'm feeling pessimistic at this point.
  19. Thanks for posting that. I've always been a Jim Kaat fan. Glad that he's still around and able to contribute to the organization!
  20. Never heard of this player, but I'm so starved for Twins Hot Stove news that this excites me tremendously!
  21. I don't see how Hughes could even be considered for the starting rotation to start the season. Hey, I'd love to be proved wrong and see him revert to the form he showed 3 or 4 years back, but I think that's highly unlikely at this point, especially since he's coming back from an injury. I'm guessing someone with a tad of MLB experience, such as Slegers, would have more of a chance to earn a spot.
  22. Like most of longtime Twins fans on this board, I suppose I'm conditioned to the concept that the Twins just don't sign top flight free agents. Too expensive, too risky, whatever the reasons; they just don't ever seem to even attempt it. Signing Jack Morris for the 1991 season was perhaps the only exception to that long-standing "rule." One would hope that with the new front office in place, a new mindset will evolve, but I'm not too optimistic that will happen in the near future.
  23. I'd give up Kepler and Gordon for Archer in a heartbeat .But I would really not want the Twins to add one of their better minor league pitching prospects to such a deal. If you forced to do it in order to complete the deal, or if Tampa is adding Span, I'd add Gonsalves to the package, but Lewis Thorpe is one I would absolutely not want to part with. I see too much potential with him.
  24. Yes, to all that. Enlow is definitely one of the more intriguing and exciting young pitchers in the system. Love the potential!
