  1. Very good analysis, Cody. Indeed, longtime fans may be puzzled about --- as you wrote --- "how has a career .252 hitter compiled the best streak of his career?" Sounds like Dozier has made some crucial adjustments. Old dogs learning new tricks?
  2. Gotta be impressed by what Nick Anderson has done on the mound thus far. As Steve wrote, those numbers are hard to ignore. Let's hope he can sustain those impressive strikeout numbers especially.
  3. I'm not in a panic mode yet, but ugghh ... what a discouraging week. Getting swept by Tampa Bay was pathetic. The offense looks impotent and the pitching hasn't been so hot either. Maybe having Buxton healthy and playing well will help things, but that alone won't cure all the various concerns this team has.
  4. Not only do the Rangers have Kevin Jepsen and Bartolo Colon on the big league club, doing some catching for them is Juan Centeno.
  5. You make a good point. On one level, I agree. But I also am an "old school" guy who used to hold season tickets to Orlando Twins games and always was of the mindset that baseball is baseball. Extra innings? No problem. Play 10, play 20. I always liked the drama of extra inning games, even in the minor leagues. It's the way the game has always been played. In any case, I'm still on the fence regarding this new extra innings rule, or whatever they are calling it. Not crazy about it, but not saying I won't change my mind at some point.
  6. I'm feeling nostalgic and want to watch videos of Chris Gimenez pitching again. But really, all these postponed games, snowouts, or whatever they hell they are called, have seriously caused me to feel depressed this weekend.Three straight days with no games?!!! Please, please, please, let's play ball again!
  7. And our old friend Pedro Florimon made the news again last week ... this time as a pitcher! Yes, the Phillies were getting blown out by the Braves (final score: 15-2) so manager Gabe Kapler used Florimon to pitch the 8th inning. He gave up a home run, but as a wire service article noted, Florimon had a decent 88 mph fastball, which ESPN added, was about 3.5 mph faster than one of the new pitchers on Seattle's staff, Kazuhisa Makita, Go, Pedro, go!
  8. Another one in that category is Anibal Sanchez. Blink and you missed it. As Old Nurse noted, he pitched 6 shutout innings against the Cubs earlier this week. Good for him.
  9. i missed this article last week. Too much else occupying my time. But very well written and researched. Plenty of interesting variables and skills touched upon. I love reading articles like this, ones that make you look at a player from a different perspective.
  10. Yeah, the weather factor ... is a factor. As Brock suggest, we need to wait another month before jumping to conclusions and tidy observations. But one thing I am in agreement on: Fernando Rodney is an unpredictable closer!
  11. Just based on what I've read, I'm excited about Ben Rortvedt and his prospects of making the big league club as a starting catcher in a few years. Good to see him off to a great start!
  12. Nick, in the article you wrote: " ... the potentially career-altering PED suspension for Jorge Polanco – Dozier's possible heir apparent at second – could change things." What do you see specifically as "career-altering" about Polanco's suspension? It's not like he's coming back from a horrible injury. Maybe he's a bit rusty the first month, but I don't see how the suspension will affect his subsequent performance. It seems like many players return from such suspensions and perform as good, if not better, than they did before. Ervin Santana and Dee Gordon are two examples I can think of right off the bat.
  13. I read the one paragraph three times, but I'm still confused: What is it about Romero that is "somewhat of a surprise" ?
  14. Man, that certainly is a very impressive team of prospects. For a AA team they almost look too good for the league! Excited to see what they can do this year.
  15. Congratulations to Niko Goodrum who hit his first regular season MLB home run yesterday. The Tigers (still can't used to the idea of Gardenhire being their manager!) have been playing him all over the place: at shortstop, first base, and in the outfield. He always was versatile, but I never thought he had this much power. I think he hit 3 or 4 homers in spring training.
  16. I think the whole dynamic of this issue would be different if this had happened in a close game. I don't even understand why the Twins were using a shift in this instance; ahead by 7 runs in the 9th inning and Berrios pitching a shutout. That's as puzzling to me as Dozier whining about Sisco bunting to get on base, thus breaking one of those idiotic "unwritten rules." Hey, if I'm Sisco and they are using a shift on me, I'll do whatever I can to get on base. That's not the same as the Twins not trying to steal a base because the Orioles didn't hold the runner on base. The Twins are the team with the big lead in this case. Yeah, this is all something about nothing, but these unwritten rules are one of the things that I hate about baseball.
  17. Seeing Kevin Jepsen turn up again with the Rangers was a surprise. I figured he was out of baseball completely. Not regretting that we let him go, but it's nice to see him pitching well again.
  18. I saw that and groaned. A scoreless lining pitched with 2 strikeouts. I'm still mystified why we let him get away. Urrrgghhh!!!
  19. Another fascinating and entertaining installment, Matt. Thanks very much for all the research and effort put into writing this column. I love taking these trips down Twins Memory Lane!
  20. Sure it's early days and no doubt there will be a few rough games ahead ... but wow! Very pleased to see the way the starters pitched the first three games. I'm, uh, feeling optimistic all of a sudden!
  21. Well, certainly one of the longest names they've ever had!
  22. Well, this whole discussion is going to get tiresome, especially if it goes on all year. I don't fault Dozier for wanting to explore free agency. At his age, it's now or never for him. And as a few people have pointed out, the idea of him being "faithful" to the Twins and wanting to stay with the team is naive. But on the other side of the coin, I won't fault the Twins front office for thinking that they will be taking too big a risk by signing him to a multi-year extension or new contract. It may be best for both parties to move on. I really can't get worked up about it either way.
  23. And let's not forget Lyman Bostock, whose promising career was tragically cut short.
  24. It seem like only yesterday (okay, maybe several years ago) when Levi Michael was a highly touted prospect for the Twins. Oh well, that's how it goes. Hope some of these guys can stick around in another organization.
