  1. Thanks for that comment. That's reassuring. Reading those Verducci articles the past few years had made me much more aware of the potential damage that a sharp increase in workload can have on a young pitcher. Seemed like a sound analysis at the time. Hopefully, as you noted, Berrrios and his workhorse ethic will prevail!
  2. Rodriguez said: "Growing up .... I was a Braves fan .... Always wondered why Leo Mazzone, their pitching coach was always rocking during the game." I always wondered about that too!
  3. Thanks for these player profiles, Seth. I really enjoy reading more about these minor league players, especially the ones that might not rank among the top prospect. Even veteran grinders like Rodriguez can surprise you if given the chance.
  4. I go back and forth on whether Molitor deserves a new contract or not. On one hand, as others have said, he seems like an intelligent, knowledgeable baseball mind with an ability to keep his team motivated. On the other hand, some of his in-game moves can be puzzling if not maddening. I imagine this decision has turned into a big dilemma for Falvey. You enter a "rebuilding" season in which you didn't have any thought of contending, and suddenly as the last week of the season arrives, you are looking at the wildcard game. How much credit to you give the manager that you hadn't hired? It would be pretty poor PR to not rehire the manager that led his team from a 100-loss season to a playoff spot the following year, but to sign him to only a 1-year extension would seem like an insult, while a multi-year deal might not be what Falvey is comfortable with either. Could turn into quite the soap opera!
  5. I'm getting a little nervous seeing the season pitch count total of Berrios (as noted by the article, he's already exceeded his previous career high) climbing higher as the season winds down. I'm in the camp that says you gotta treat these young pitchers cautiously. If he exceeds his previous total by TOO much, that could be risky for next year. With the Twins looking like a lock for the wild card game, I'd even consider pushing Berrios back in the rotation this coming week. Let Colon, or even Gee, takes his lumps again!
  6. Speaking of Buxton's speed, of course there was that insanely fast inside the park homer and the recent rash of triples, but it's also interesting to note how successful he has been still stealing bases all year. What, he's been caught only 1 time? Normally, even with such elite speed, a lot of these young players have to learn how to take leads on pitchers and execute the steals successfully. But it seems like Buxton has had not had to worry about such learning curve on the bases. Granted, he's not swiping them at Billy Hamilton level yet, but there is always next year!
  7. I live in Southeast Asia and don't get to see many (any!) games on TV (Internet highlights and box scores are mainly my diet) but the more I read about Escobar the more impressed I am, both with his versatility and his all-around play. Seems like a solid, dependable, likeable player, the kind a team needs to have (on the field and in the clubhouse). And he's hit for more power than expected too. Who would have thought he would turn out to be so valuable an addition when he got him in that Liriano trade with the White Sox. But who was the other player we got in that trade from the Chisox? My memory fails me.
  8. I also agree with the praise. We're lucky to have such detailed and thorough reports from the Twins' minor league teams. I recall the days, not so long ago, when I had to hunt online for stats of how players in the Twins' minor league teams were doing. Or even further back, waiting for issues of Baseball America to arrive in my mailbox. Reading these reports is much easier, and more interesting!
  9. Bullpens can be such unpredictable creations. The Twins got snake-bit this year with the rash of injuries to the young arms/prospects, plus the long-shot notion that Perkins and Hughes could return with effectiveness. I know most people don't want to hear the mantra "be patient" but I think we have to be in this case. I like what we have waiting in the wings.
  10. From the bullpen: Matt Guerrier Backup catcher (okay, maybe third-string): Mark Salas
  11. Yeah, the bullpen mix for next year should be VERY interesting and very competitive. As you noted. even less-heralded guys like Belisle and Gee have played useful roles this year. Do we keep Duffey and hope he bounces back? Is there a role for Phil Hughes? And will Chargois and Burdi bounce back from injuries and contribute? The bullpen could actually be a strength in 2018.
  12. I had to go back page 1 and re-read all the posts after realizing that I had duplicated a few names already mentioned. Sorry! Anyway, here are a few new ones, or so I think. Carlos Gomez, Pat Neshek, and Kurt Suzuki were All-Stars at least once, so they don't count, but how about: Doug Bernier Wilson Ramirez Clete Thomas
  13. Molitor was quoted in a post-game interview, talking about Gibson's rough first innnng: "Of all the things he's done, this one's, in some ways, is maybe a little more impressive to give us six innings after that start." And I have to agree with that. Hanging in there, settling down, and giving the Twins six innings was huge. If Molitor had been forced to go to the bullpen in the second inning, well, the outcome of this game may have been very different. In any case, Gibson held it together when we needed it.
  14. Justified or not, the timing of the announcement was a bit unfortunate, seeing as how Mientkiewicz was at home down in Florida, without power or cell phone access, trying to clean up after the hurricane at the time. Yahoo News, for one, made the Twins front office look like a bunch of heartless creeps in their article about the dismissal.
  15. Here are a few more that I don't think were named yet: Bob Tewksbury George Mitterwald Keith Atherton
  16. I noticed that Florimon had been playing some center field for the Phillies recently .... until he suffered a pretty bad injury to his leg last week. He had also --- if can believe it --- been hitting well!
  17. This is one of the things that I love about the great game of baseball; players who weren't considered "can't miss" prospects but who battled and kept trying, or perhaps changed something in their approach to become better, or maybe just never got a real chance. Think of players like Kluber or J. D. Martinez or Justin Turner, ones that turned into all-stars against all expectations. Never say never, right?
  18. I'd settle for a pitcher like that on the Twins staff!
  19. This news truly shocked me at first. For several years now it seemed like Mientkiewicz was being groomed for the manager's role in Minnesota. But ... after reading the analysis from others on this board, I can't say that I'm upset about the parting. The organization needs their minor league managers on the same developmental page. If Dougie's vision clashed with Falvey and Levine's, and especially if he's adverse to sabermetric strategy, that would be too awkward a fit going forward. One wonders if this is only the first of several changes in the coaching and managing ranks in the organization in the months ahead..
  20. Back to the infield, how about: Christian Guzman (didn't he lead the league in triples one year?) Paul Sorrento Terry Jorgenson
  21. I can't believe that everyone has forgotten about Rondell White! Then again, I think he spent most of his Twins career on the DL!
  22. Sorry for repeated posts, but these names keep popping into my head: Another third-string catcher: Orlando Mercado
  23. We can't forget that famous father and son duo: Sal Butera Drew Butera
  24. Just for the name alone, Akil Baddoo, this kid rates highly. But the bonus is that he seems to have all the right tools to reach the majors. Hope the climb continues.
