  1. I'm puzzled by that move also. Seems like a big jump in levels for a player who is not a top prospect.
  2. Sounds like he has an impressive set of skills, but his being only 15-years-old I'm not sure how much enthusiasm I can muster at this point.
  3. A walk-off homer to give the Twins a win!? How did I miss this that? Oh ... you were talking about Lewin Diaz and Fort. Myers. Oh well, I'll take any good news from the Twins organization at this dismal early juncture in the season.
  4. The depressing losing streak aside, I'm also concerned about this early season tactic of "dumpster diving" as someone so aptly phrased it; to acquire new players to supplement our fractured roster. It's one thing if we were suffering from a rash of injuries, but the vast majority of these moves, just to replace players who are performing poorly, seems like the head office is already panicking.
  5. The revolving door of player transactions the past two weeks is making my head spin. Where did this new relief pitcher Matt Magill come from and how did the Twins acquire him? Amidst all the other turmoil lately I missed that move. Not it matters much, I suppose. But Is he good enough to stay on the MLB roster and contribute?
  6. Going to see Neil Young and Crazy Horse sounds like the best idea I've heard so far this year!
  7. I didn't realize that Thorpe was still a bit "too young" for the level he's at. Good to factor that into the equation. After missing most of 2 seasons, I just assumed he had regressed as far as age to level was concerned. Thanks for the reminder, Seth.
  8. Good points, What you called "the cute roster manipulation" smacks of things the front office tends to do in July or August .. not in April. Looking scary out there.
  9. I can't recall exactly when he joined the team, but Morrison put up very impressive numbers during the spring training gamed that he played. Of course, none of that matters now that the regular season is here and he's struggling. He's shown a bit more signs of life this past week, but I doubt he'll come remotely close to matching the numbers he put up in Tampa Bay last year.
  10. Very good analysis, Cody. Indeed, longtime fans may be puzzled about --- as you wrote --- "how has a career .252 hitter compiled the best streak of his career?" Sounds like Dozier has made some crucial adjustments. Old dogs learning new tricks?
  11. Gotta be impressed by what Nick Anderson has done on the mound thus far. As Steve wrote, those numbers are hard to ignore. Let's hope he can sustain those impressive strikeout numbers especially.
  12. I'm not in a panic mode yet, but ugghh ... what a discouraging week. Getting swept by Tampa Bay was pathetic. The offense looks impotent and the pitching hasn't been so hot either. Maybe having Buxton healthy and playing well will help things, but that alone won't cure all the various concerns this team has.
  13. You make a good point. On one level, I agree. But I also am an "old school" guy who used to hold season tickets to Orlando Twins games and always was of the mindset that baseball is baseball. Extra innings? No problem. Play 10, play 20. I always liked the drama of extra inning games, even in the minor leagues. It's the way the game has always been played. In any case, I'm still on the fence regarding this new extra innings rule, or whatever they are calling it. Not crazy about it, but not saying I won't change my mind at some point.
  14. i missed this article last week. Too much else occupying my time. But very well written and researched. Plenty of interesting variables and skills touched upon. I love reading articles like this, ones that make you look at a player from a different perspective.
  15. Yeah, the weather factor ... is a factor. As Brock suggest, we need to wait another month before jumping to conclusions and tidy observations. But one thing I am in agreement on: Fernando Rodney is an unpredictable closer!
  16. Just based on what I've read, I'm excited about Ben Rortvedt and his prospects of making the big league club as a starting catcher in a few years. Good to see him off to a great start!
  17. Nick, in the article you wrote: " ... the potentially career-altering PED suspension for Jorge Polanco – Dozier's possible heir apparent at second – could change things." What do you see specifically as "career-altering" about Polanco's suspension? It's not like he's coming back from a horrible injury. Maybe he's a bit rusty the first month, but I don't see how the suspension will affect his subsequent performance. It seems like many players return from such suspensions and perform as good, if not better, than they did before. Ervin Santana and Dee Gordon are two examples I can think of right off the bat.
  18. I read the one paragraph three times, but I'm still confused: What is it about Romero that is "somewhat of a surprise" ?
  19. Man, that certainly is a very impressive team of prospects. For a AA team they almost look too good for the league! Excited to see what they can do this year.
  20. Another fascinating and entertaining installment, Matt. Thanks very much for all the research and effort put into writing this column. I love taking these trips down Twins Memory Lane!
  21. Sure it's early days and no doubt there will be a few rough games ahead ... but wow! Very pleased to see the way the starters pitched the first three games. I'm, uh, feeling optimistic all of a sudden!
  22. Well, this whole discussion is going to get tiresome, especially if it goes on all year. I don't fault Dozier for wanting to explore free agency. At his age, it's now or never for him. And as a few people have pointed out, the idea of him being "faithful" to the Twins and wanting to stay with the team is naive. But on the other side of the coin, I won't fault the Twins front office for thinking that they will be taking too big a risk by signing him to a multi-year extension or new contract. It may be best for both parties to move on. I really can't get worked up about it either way.
  23. And let's not forget Lyman Bostock, whose promising career was tragically cut short.
  24. I agree; great article, Nick. I especially liked the insight into the front office and how they are using the new analytics along with having some ex-players around as veteran presence/mentors/whatever. It's a good mix. Like many on this board, I'm VERY excited about the Twins this season. Please, please, please, don't let me down guys!
