  1. Yep. The net outcome is the same offensively. You put your best defenders at the key positions.
  2. In 2012, the Royals drew 1,739,000 fans. In 2013, the Royals drew 1,750,000 fans. Adjusted for league attendance, they actually went backward in attendance.
  3. 2. I don't make assumptions about player performances and unless that player has established a benchmark of performance and I certainly don't recommend betting on it. 3. Sure, if it works out. Again, assumptions. 4. Nothing was preventing them from making the same or similar trade in June if they were a 30-30 team at that point and Myers was superfluous to the organization (highly unlikely).
  4. They won't make the playoffs unless they find a way to post a team OPS much higher than 15th in the AL. And it's going to require them to give up another prospect in trade to make that happen, in all likelihood. So now they're down Myers and Prospect X and James Shields still leaves after the season. As for Myers, even with his struggles he's still looking to be an adequate starter for the Rays, not to mention that he tore the cover off the ball last season on his way to a Rookie of the Year award.
  5. They missed. That's what's wrong with it. And teams usually miss the playoffs when it requires a 20 game swing from the previous year. Swap out Myers for Shields last year and the Royals are an 84 win team according to the WAR adjustment, as opposed to the 86 games they actually won. 1-2 more years won't kill a fanbase that hasn't seen the playoffs in almost three decades. Nobody is answering this question: should the Twins have traded Sano for Price? If not, why are you advocating what Moore did in KC? It's pretty much the same situation. A 20 game swing to make the playoffs, the Twins picked up Nolasco and Hughes, which are decent comps for Santana. The Twins had Joe Mauer (a calibre of player KC did not have), and a smattering of young players.
  6. I think that was more out of necessity than any desire to see Plouffe play shortstop. Thanks to various blunders, the Twins were out of options at short. They were drilling through the bottom of the barrel when Plouffe got the call. My point is that people are selectively remembering scouting reports. On BYTO, pretty much everybody knew Plouffe was a butcher at short because scouting reports had been saying it for years. That doesn't mean every scouting report said he was awful but I remember most clearly stating he was bad at the position. So the data was there. Whether people chose to acknowledge it is another matter entirely.
  7. Yep. "Best case scenario" for Aaron Hicks is All-Star centerfielder. That hasn't changed. It has become less likely but it's still a possibility. The guy has 438 MLB PAs.
  8. It's not. It provides depth at a position of weakness and allows the team the possibility of demoting Hicks should the need arise. Sizemore is not a good option to start in centerfield for a contending team. No one is making that argument.
  9. Change? No. Tweak? Absolutely. If the Twins are somehow magically 52-46 in July, I wouldn't mind them "going for it" by dishing off a guy like Kepler for a centerfielder or a starting pitcher. I mean, why not? Losing Kepler isn't going to kill the franchise and boy, this fanbase could really use a shot in the arm right about now. (Kepler is a bad example right now because of his struggles but the point stands... I wouldn't dip into the top ten prospect list but I'd consider moving someone in the low minors with some upside)
  10. I disagree. I think there's a lot to be said for sustained performance at a high level. Will people look back at Buerhle the same way they do Pedro? No, of course not... But there's room for the Blylevens of the world alongside the Koufaxes of the world in the HoF. Guys who are very good for a very long time deserve consideration, IMO. Not necessary election but lengthy consideration.
  11. Ryan would probably flip Butler for a prospect, as he should. It's what he did with Span and Revere when the opportunity arose. Again, I'm a firm believer in prospect Pokemon. Catch 'em all. I have yet to hear anyone say the Twins should have traded Miguel Sano for David Price four months ago, yet that's exactly what Moore did last season (and Price is a younger, better version of Shields). He was trying to push a team to a 20+ win improvement season over season. That's not a risk, that's laying your ass on the line and hoping the stars align with the deed to your house sitting on Hard Eight. On the other hand, the Ervin Santana acquisition was fantastic. It was a roll of the dice with limited downside. He didn't sacrifice anything of note to take a chance on a guy improving... Not much different than the Phil Hughes signing, when you get right down to it. If you want to improve a team without sacrificing the future, that's how you do it. Roll the dice on guys rebounding, make a few smart FA acquisitions, and keep the farm intact.
  12. Ah, good ol' rubber-armed Mark. If he keeps it up for another few years, he should get consideration. He's approaching Bert Blyleven territory at that point (though Bert pitched forever, basically).
  13. If he's a 4 WAR player that played for 15 years, that means he's a 60 WAR player. And those guys get into the HoF. Who is it?
  14. This point I fully understand and somewhat sympathize with the front office over it. But the Royals were so close. So close. After nearly two decades of incompetent play, the fans could wait one, maybe two, more years. The Royals were going to get there in time, the front office just needed to show a little more patience. One of Terry Ryan's most redeeming qualities, I might add. Had he been stewarding the Royals during that time, I believe their future would be blindingly bright right now. Ryan has had stocked farm systems in the past (as he does now) but never anything on the level of what the Kansas City Royals had in 2012.
  15. I'm going to get a lot of use out of this image today.
  16. Barnes has a .590 OPS away from Coors in a SSS. Last year with Houston, he OPSed at .635. Drew Stubbs has a .551 OPS away from Coors. Last year with Cincinnati, he OPSed at .665. Never trade for a hitter that plays in Coors based on their overall stat line. Ever. Never ever ever ever.
  17. It's not an easy decision. Demoting him could be the wrong move but I tend to lean the other direction.
  18. I'd agree if the Twins were 19-25. I think it's better in the short term to pick up Sizemore and better in the long term for Aaron if he spends some time in Rochester. I think Sizemore would be a good get if only as a bench bat. He might be cooked but there's a chance he can shore up a team weakness, too. And I'd like to see Hicks in Minnesota again this season.
  19. The Twins can have both if Sizemore is released soon. They wouldn't have to worry about the roster until Fuld is ready to return (and they can delay that by a few weeks with rehab assignments). That gives them plenty of time to evaluate Hicks and see if he has truly turned the corner or whether this is another blip in a miserable season for Aaron.
  20. I wanted Hicks to start the season in AAA. When the team decided to make him their CF, I said "meh, okay... give the kid a shot". He has been really bad. It won't hurt him one bit to flail away at AAA pitching for a month in hopes that he finds his groove... A groove he hasn't seen since August of 2012. Think about that for a moment. August of 2012. This isn't about Sizemore. This is about Aaron Hicks. The Twins just need Sizemore to tread Hicksian water for a month or two while Aaron gets his head straight.
  21. I'd rather see the Sox become a perpetual 65 win team.
  22. How is MiLB FiP evaluated? Does the metric adjust for the often clown-car-esque nature of MiLB defense? If not, then I believe it's a pretty flawed metric.
  23. Honestly, I just feel bad for the fans. The Royals haven't won 90 or more games since the late 80s, I believe. They had such a good chance to build something that would invigorate the fan base for 4-6 years but impatience to compete now instead of 1-2 years from now may have crippled the franchise. Sure, they might be an okay team for awhile but it's now less likely that they'll be a very good team. But hey, good for the Twins, I suppose. Still, I'd rather see the Twins compete with the Royals in 2016-2018 than the Tigers or White Sox.
  24. Sure, some risks are good ones. But the Royals were 72-90 in 2012. The comparisons I'm drawing to the 2014 Twins, who finished 2013 at 66-96, are good ones. The Royals had a long way to go to make the playoffs. Trying to do it all in one season was folly, particularly if your offense has question marks and you have to sacrifice one of the best offensive prospects in baseball to do it.
