  1. I think it's a bit more complicated than that. From 2007-2010, the A's lost 86, 86, 87, 81, and 88 games. As we're seeing with Tampa, it's *really* hard for even the smartest teams to sustain more than 5-6 winning seasons on a tight budget. Baseball is a cyclical game even for the big budget teams. Did I like the Twins picking up the likes of Kevin Correia two years ago? Absolutely not. But in the grand scheme of things, it probably didn't impact the team's record much from 2011-2013. It would have taken piles of money to make those teams competitive, as they were pretty terrible from front to back with little/no help from prospects to improve. In short, the Twins do some things wrong but really, it seems that they do a lot more right, at least when Ryan is at the helm. This team is semi-competitive after a three year slump and only looks to improve as the season progresses.
  2. http://www.nbcsports.com/baseball/mlb/oakland-way A pretty interesting article on the return of Oakland to dominance. One snippet that I believe Twins fans should keep in mind: I see too many write off a player before he gets a legitimate shot at succeeding in the majors. Patience with prospects is a virtue. We've seen the failings of multiple Twins prospects who later shined in the majors: Trevor Plouffe, Brian Dozier, Carlos Gomez, etc. A good thing to keep in mind when talking about the likes of Aaron Hicks and Chris Parmelee. Oakland has become the best team in baseball by not succumbing to knee-jerk reactions. We should all encourage the Twins to do the same.
  3. The guy gave up nine hits and a walk in six innings. Only struck out three. He got through the first two innings on sheer luck. It was not a good start. It was a lucky start.
  4. An old post but I just saw it. The Starks are idiots. It's one of my bigger problems with the books. The only characters you genuinely like (barring Sansa) continually put themselves in jeopardy and end up dead. Realistic? Maybe. Enjoyable? Not after 4,500 pages of flogging that horse. It was a great set-up in Game of Thrones but by the fourth book, it starts to wear thin and breaks reader trust.
  5. Mauer has a long track record of success and has stumbled in the first 200 PAs of 2014. Ryan Howard has a long track record of mediocrity, is paid nearly the same amount as Mauer, and still has 2 2/3 years left on his contract. Howard's contract is worse and it's not even close. Also, the Phillies have to pay Howard $10m (!) to decline his 2017 option. Holy moly.
  6. From 2010-2013, the Phillies paid Ryan Howard $79m. He posted a 1.4 combined WAR during that time. During that same time frame, Joe posted a 16.6 combined WAR and was paid $81.5m.
  7. Uh.... Alex Rodriguez. Also Ryan Howard, Josh Hamilton, and CC Sabathia.
  8. 24 and 33 plate appearances. Hey, look what happens when you look at his career line instead of a week's worth of plate appearances: SUPER CLUTCH. (that doesn't really exist but whatever)
  9. It's really hard to watch former Yankees beat the hell out of the Yankees in Yankee Stadium. Yep. A real cryin' shame.
  10. I'm not entirely against that idea but it all comes down to money. I'm a bit wary of putting a bunch of money into a guy who will probably be shifted to a corner outfield spot as soon as next season. Then again, the Twins don't have many holes right now that don't have quality prospects rising through the minors at the position. Maybe spending money on an outfielder isn't a bad idea.
  11. That's how I've felt for three weeks. Either bomb out of three starts in a row and force a decision or pitch well enough to earn a rotation spot.
  12. Planned it that way from the start. No luck involved whatsoever.
  13. Yep. I'm pretty forgiving of Mauer but that was just plain bad.
  14. Nice. Runs will be hard-earned today.
  15. Giving up a prospect and Fien for a centerfielder feels a lot like a knee-jerk reaction to me. With Hicks, Buxton, and Rosario in this system, giving up pieces for a centerfielder sounds really dumb. Play Fuld in the short-term and be done with it.
  16. Why on earth would you choose to go to THIS game?
  17. To which Bud replied "Trade him to New York and I'll see what I can do."
  18. Best post I've read in awhile. Reminds me of my idea to put a double cheeseburger under second base in innings when Matt LeCroy was due up. A great idea until Matty started bowling over the pitcher running directly to second after contact.
  19. I was just being a smart ass. A good way to counter these shifts might be to try to pull the first pitch.
  20. Absolutely. My point is that his RISP and MoB lines are better than his overall 2014 stat line, which tells me one thing: Joe's problem is his 2014 stat line. It's that simple. RISP and MoB numbers normalize over time to match what the player does overall.
  21. And thus, the trap is set.
  22. So what you're telling me is that Joe needs to stop swinging at the first pitch.
  23. Fair enough. I simply do not understand the "Mauer needs more fire" argument. These are professional athletes playing at the highest level of the sport. If they didn't know how to bring their own personal fire, they never would have made it here in the first place. These guys are better at their job than anyone on this forum. They are competing at the highest level. We'd all have to be CEOs of our respective companies to be considered their peer group. So my opinion is "let them be themselves". MLB players are not a middle school basketball team.
