  1. I can get on board with this idea. Hell, right now I'll get on board with damned near any idea.
  2. I just looked at his FG page and Colabello has a -14 DRS in 330 innings. That's... amazing. He's worth -1 run defensively every 23.5 innings he's on the field. Extrapolate that out to 150 games of play and he's a -57 DRS player. http://media.giphy.com/media/mLGnUCverTQ52/giphy.gif
  3. Colabello is having a nice season for the Jays and good for him, but... He has a .392 BABIP for the season. Yes, his BABIP is almost .400. Can't sign a guy with the expectation he'll be the luckiest bastard in the clubhouse. Enjoy his production while it's happening but sooner or later, it's going to come crashing back to earth.
  4. Good thing the Twins were able to avoid that bulllpen day by starting Duffey.
  5. Quick question: did anyone here not see that one coming?
  6. I assumed it was due to ankle concerns. No evidence to back that up, just a hunch.
  7. That's not what WAR is saying. WAR stands for "Wins Above Replacement", not "Wins Above Cardboard Cutout". WAR determines a certain level of competency at the game of baseball as a baseline for zero. That's why players can be negative WAR. Let's say a replacement player is a 5 out of a scale of 10. That seems a reasonable baseline for a AAAA player. Tulowitzki would be roughly a 7 out of 10. Dozier would be roughly an 8 out of 10. Hardly "double the player".
  8. Agreed. I don't expect the guy to come to Minnesota and OPS at a .900 clip, I only expect him to help the team raise its (pathetic) .687 OPS against RHP. And considering how Shane Robinson is the guy blocking Arcia with Buxton on the way in the next few weeks, there's no reason not to pull the trigger on this move. There is literally nothing to lose unless both Hicks and Rosario suffer an injury at the same time (in the next two weeks before Byron is finished rehabbing). I'd say the odds of that happening are... low.
  9. Yeah, Uggla is a bad comp. He was a butcher with the glove. Uggla played in the majors for ten seasons and accumulated a -69 (!) DRS. Dozier is in his fourth season with a career +1 DRS.
  10. I'm not terribly concerned with Hicks and Rosario scuffling. That's what young players do and why it's hard to keep a young team in contention through the dog days of the season. But why hasn't the front office gotten out in front of this pretty apparent problem and called up supplemental players to make the 25 man roster better today? I'm not even asking for a trade - though I believe picking up a single reliever at the deadline was akin to putting a band-aid on an amputee - I just want to see the Twins field the best 25 man roster possible. That is not an unreasonable request. Hell, when a team spends two months holding a playoff spot, it's expected. I don't even care if the Twins make the playoffs, I just want to see them give it their all and make it interesting through most of September. I set the bar that low and the front office still fails to come through and meet my expectations? That's ridiculous.
  11. Holy ****, that's actually kinda amazing.
  12. This is not a term I use often to describe a team but... Pathetic. The team hasn't given up more than five runs in any of those games so not only are the Twins not hitting, they've wasted several good pitching efforts in very winnable games. How is Oswaldo Arcia not on this team? How do they continue to do so little when options are available? It's maddening.
  13. I'd take Berrios at this point. 2016 is Shields' age 34 season. If it was Berrios vs. age 28-30 Shields, I'd take Shields, obviously.
  14. I'm not sure what else the kid needs to do to prove his ability to some people. He's 21 years old and dominating AAA hitters after dominating AA hitters and A+ hitters and... The kid looks legit. He may not turn into an ace - that's him hitting his ceiling - but he's the best chance the Twins have of acquiring an ace in the near future. AAA stats: 37.2 IP 33 Hits 3 HR 11 BB 34 SO He could come up to MLB and scuffle. He could come up to MLB, hit the ground running, and never look back. There's only one way to find out. Berrios, Gibson, May is a decent playoff rotation if Jose pitches to his ability.
  15. I think Dave is basing that on old stats before Joe went into his current tailspin. From June 5-July 24, Joe posted an .816 OPS. I didn't try to optimize that timeframe beyond "it looks like he started hitting here" and "it looks like he stopped hitting here". There was a stretch of 4-5 weeks where Joe was OPSing around .850. I remember when it happened.
  16. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z85/Lions300/Gifs/nathan-fillion-well-nevermind1_zps1aab1c77.gif
  17. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! OMG.
  18. What I don't understand is why Arcia's defense matters. Hunter is bad in right. Arcia can take his place occasionally and nothing is lost defensively while the offense improves quite a bit against RHP. The Twins have two CF on the roster right now so having a third in Robinson is a waste of space. How many close games have the Twins had in the past month and how much could an .800 OPS guy against RHP have helped them in those situations? Rotating Arcia into the roster a couple of times a week is not going to kill the team's defense. Roll him out there when Pelfrey or Gibson starts. Big deal.
  19. The Ramos deal was "tear your hair out, WTF are you thinking" across the board. Ramos was a former top 100 prospect. He was injured and his value had bottomed out. The Twins had no catching prospects behind him higher than low A ball. That trade still pisses me off. The thinking behind it was so fundamentally flawed I still can't believe Smith pulled the trigger on it.
  20. I'm not sure Kepler would outperform Robinson and Max is not a centerfielder so that's a non-issue. Arcia would outperform Shane. I believe this is a pretty clear cut case of KISS. Kepler is an intriguing, though unestablished, prospect. He's having a good season and is only in AA. He's emerging as a potential Top 100 guy but needs his reps to see where he's really at and whether he's ready for a promotion (he had a high BABIP early in the season but seems to be adjusting moderately well once the luck well ran dry). On the other hand, we have a defensively flawed, swing from his heels but hit it a hell of a long way, kill RHP bat in Oswaldo Arcia. He's out of options this season. He has repeatedly mashed AAA pitching to the point it's hard to argue he's actually learning anything down there anymore. If Oswaldo is going to advance as a hitter, it will be under Bruno's tutelage in Minnesota against the best pitching in the world. In the meantime, the Twins will just have to suffer with his .800 OPS against RHP. Hopefully that number will climb more toward 1.000 in the coming years because I just can't see how the Twins could cope with his defense if he's hitting at only an .800 clip.
  21. The thing is... He was raking. He was destroying AAA pitching for 3-4 weeks before the ten game slump. And yes, Arcia's defense is terrible but if a team OPSing under .700 against righties can't find roster space for a 24 year old that hits them at over an .800 clip, I don't know what to say.
  22. Sure. I'm not claiming Hu had no value but this board erupted into mayhem after the trade, way beyond what was warranted. Yes, it was an overpay. No, it was not a disaster (assuming Jepsen doesn't implode). Hu never cracked a top 100 list. It was incredibly unlikely he would ever crack a top 100 list. It's also possible, maybe even likely, this is Hu's high water mark in value. It was a bad trade (mostly because two pitchers were included, IMO) but it's a long way from Ramos/Capps in terms of "holy ****, what are you thinking?" The way people are acting, you'd think Hu has the upside of Berrios, Gonsalves, or Thorpe. He doesn't. He doesn't even have the upside of a strikeout-diminished Stewart, IMO.
