  1. That's why I didn't hate Pelfrey on the roster to open the season. He has a chance to become a decent, though unimpressive, bullpen arm. I don't know if he misses more bats because he can dial it up a bit in the pen but at the very least, he's not worse than Boyer or some of the other junk that has occupied bullpen spots for the Twins this season.
  2. At that point, it makes more sense to move Pelfrey into the bullpen and not trade him away. While I'm not in love with the idea of Mike pitching relief innings, he's a competent pitcher, a label that doesn't apply to a significant portion of the Twins pen.
  3. Yes, this. Hu was nothing like a top ten prospect in the organization and if he is, your organization is in sorry shape. With that said, Ryan still gave up too much for a reliever having a down year. I have no issue trading Hu but I have an issue with the return (and giving up Tapia as well!), which was unimpressive. Jepsen isn't a bad reliever but he's not very good, either... especially given his recent control issues and dip in velocity (though that may have returned).
  4. The only downside of keeping Mike Pelfrey is that he consumes a roster spot. Trading Mike Pelfrey should be a non-issue to a contending team unless they need to clear roster space. Letting Mike Pelfrey walk after the season is complete is akin to walking past a nickel laying on the street because you're in a hurry. It has no real impact on the overall health of the franchise and five minutes after he's gone, you've entirely forgotten about him.
  5. I understand not wanting to start May against Toronto. That's asking a lot from a guy who hasn't made a start in over a month. With that said, bad ideas continue to force more bad ideas. I wasn't completely against May going to the bullpen but it took way too long to get him into leverage situations. The Twins needed a quick fix, chose a quick fix, and then took their sweet time actually implementing the fix. It's... Maddening, to say the least.
  6. Mr Duffey, your bus to Toronto has arrived on schedule. Once you reach your destination at Rogers Centre, remove all luggage and exit the bus safely. Once you are clear of the bus, please wait for your assigned Twins personnel member to throw you under it.
  7. I don't believe Levi is talking about signing Torii or Johan. I think he's talking about not taking action on them and when things were coming to a head, retiring and leaving Bill Smith in a difficult situation.
  8. I'm not worried about setting Jose back, I'm more concerned with the fact there are only 8-9 more weeks left in the season and it will take at least two weeks to get Berrios up to speed in the bullpen. That's 25% of the remaining time in the season. Like you said, Berrios seems like a real pro. I'm not worried about upsetting a delicate flower or prima donna in Jose, I'm worried about the time required to get him on the field and productive if changes are made.
  9. Maybe it's just me but if you're going to call up Berrios, it makes more sense to put him in the rotation and keep May in the pen. Berrios hasn't pitched a relief inning in roughly three years and the Twins spent a month letting Trevor adjust to a bullpen role. I don't agree with any of the decisions made up to this point but there's no need to continue shuffling guys out of place and further escalate the issue. Make the best of the bad situation and let guys stay in the roles they've had for the past month.
  10. Watched it last year. Highly recommended.
  11. Possibly, but I'm not sure we're at that point yet. I do know that if Ryan isn't aggressive this offseason, I'm going to be terribly disappointed. Now is the time to start actively fixing problems and I hope Ryan starts changing his approach to fit the needs of where the team is today.
  12. My favorite aspect of this bullpen is how they all step up and help a guy when he gets into a jam.
  13. Do you expect all players to come to MLB and OPS at .900 with Gold Glove defense right off the bat? This is how rebuilds work. It takes time and patience to build a team around young players.
  14. Actually, seeing how Santana was one of the worst players in baseball before the demotion, this move has some strategic significance, even if Escobar is merely replacement level. Of course, making this move six weeks ago would have had more impact...
  15. Ah, I was going from memory. Thought it was more like 2.
  16. So there are teams out there that score on every draft pick they make? I'm not defending the Twins' drafts but this post is an absurd example of false equivalency. Maybe the Twins are the bestest drafters evah because they got Berrios in the supplemental round. See how that works? No? Good, because it doesn't.
  17. And it's possible he continues to do that. I wouldn't rule it out, I'm just not terribly high on the guy.
  18. You won't get any rebuttal from me. That's exactly why I don't like the trade. Sure, I can see giving up that kind of value for a truly quality player but Kevin Jepsen isn't a truly quality player. He's a former quality player who is having a down season. Could he be a quality player again? Sure, but he isn't one this season (well, he kinda has been the past six weeks but you leverage the worst parts of a player during negotiations, not the best). That's the kind of player you give up less for compared to his peers, not more. Jepsen's extra year of control should be leveraged against his value, not for it.
  19. Probably the most accurate post in this thread to describe my thoughts on the events of today and the past month, really.
  20. I don't have much faith in guys who rely on a trick pitch to succeed in the minors, especially the lower minors. What deceives hitters in MiLB is often grossly exposed at the MLB level.
  21. I don't see that comp at all but if you honestly believe that is a good comp for Hu, I suppose that's reason to get upset. As I said earlier, I'm just not very high on Hu. He was a nice piece to have in the system and I would have demanded more than Jepsen for him in trade but I'm not going to go into outrage mode over it, either.
  22. I meant "whole lot of nothing" in regards to people apparently thinking Hu was the next Bob Gibson. I'd give the trade maybe a 3-4/10. It's not a good trade. I'm also not going to lose my mind over it because it's likely that Hu never amounts to much of anything.
  23. Using ERA to qualify a reliever's performance, Dave? Really?
  24. Absolutely, because it's a sound argument to use "Hu" and "Buxton" as comparables.
  25. Yep, this. Although Jepsen has some upside. People are looking at his 2015 line and ignoring that he had a pretty rough start, nevermind he was actually very good in 2013/14.
