  1. I'm cautiously optimistic. It seems that Buxton has started hitting more line drives, which shows good contact. I don't even care if the line drive lands in a fielder's glove at this point, as it did last night in Byron's final plate appearance. His first single, while exciting to see fall to the grass, was far less impressive than his final out.
  2. I'm not even giving them the benefit of the doubt, simply saying that 40 days isn't a big deal either way. They could have gotten the diagnosis wrong 15 times in that 40 day span and it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things.
  3. I'd rather see Mejia than Hu. While the Jepsen trade may have been a mistake - I'm not really ready to say that yet - Adalberto looks to be the better pitcher. Mejia seemed to really step it up in the high minors last season while Hu has scuffled in AAA in a very SSS. Hu didn't exactly light up the world in AA last season, either.
  4. It solidifies his base, though. I'm sure all the jackholes I know in the UP are doing cartwheels over this news, even if it doesn't actually mean anything in the long run.
  5. This is kind of where I lean but what do you do at DH in that situation? I'm thinking Escobar at third and Sano at DH. Eddie needs playing time and he's decent against LHP. It also gives Sano a breather on occasion. He can't play 162 games.
  6. Where can we find spray chart data for the current season? Fangraphs doesn't have anything and Brooks Baseball appears to be broken. I really want to filter for Joe Mauer's hits after that double to right last night. I suspect the chart will look pretty comical.
  7. I'm hesitant to say he should get most of his plate appearances in a corner outfield spot but I won't rule it out, either. I need to see Grossman in the field more to see if 2016 was a fluke or if he's just that bad in the outfield.
  8. I suspect it does, as Castro doesn't appear to be great at digging balls out of the dirt. The framing thing definitely plays a part as well, as Castro has said that you basically decide to frame a pitch or you prepare for a throw to second. You can't do both.
  9. I was laughing my ass off at that stat last night. Ouch. And we thought Bautista vs. the Twins was bad.
  10. MLB needs to track "air disruption value".
  11. I wish the Twins had two more Santiagos. They'd be a decent, maybe even good, team at that point. And, prospects be damned, who doesn't want to watch a good team?
  12. Between Mauer sucking against LHP and Grossman mashing the ball, I think there's plenty of room to squeeze Robbie into almost every game, most coming at DH with a few coming at a corner outfield spot. OPS against LHP: Grossman: .857 Rosario: .467 Kepler: .516 Yeah, you take a hit defensively but you gain 300-400 OPS points in the process.
  13. I kinda worded that poorly. I should have said "scoops and catches don't have a lot of value in advanced metrics because everyone's pretty good at it". They're important and they count in metrics but if everyone is good at something, players who are great at it won't gain much value. It's the defensive equivalent of a player having a .320 batting average while wearing a Rockies uniform in 1998. When everyone else is hitting .310, the accomplishment doesn't mean a whole lot.
  14. I don't think he'll ever pull down that kind of money. He'll get paid for sure but his defensive liability is going to manifest at some point, probably before he hits free agency. The guy is holding down third base capably right now but I'm skeptical he will be able to stay there through his prime.
  15. Everyone makes mistakes and errors. But their stellar play in the day in, day out balls/strikes greatly outweighs the occasional screw up. One thing that has shocked the hell out of me is their caught stealing this season. Castro has openly admitted that caught stealing is a weakness of his play, as framing and setting up for a throw to second are at odds with one another.
  16. In the strange world that is Major League Baseball, Byron Buxton has a higher exit velocity (84.79 mph) than Eddie Rosario (84.30 mph). Buxton has two doubles to Rosario's two doubles and two homers. MLB average is 87.60 mph.
  17. I don't care if Dozier pulls everything as long as he's hitting. But, yeah, a slightly more rounded approach probably won't hurt. Dozier, despite appearing to scuffle, is having an okay season for himself. It makes me wonder what he's going to look like when the nearly inevitable hot streak kicks in. When Dozier scuffles, he usually posts a .600 or .650 OPS with tons of pop flies and a .200 BABIP. He's not doing that this season.
  18. Also, Sano's arm is really fun to watch. That guy is so ridiculously strong. I wonder what his fastball speed would be from the mound.
  19. It's not you. Even when I'm casually watching the game, I notice how smooth both Castro and Gimenez look behind the plate. Under more critical examination, they look even better. And those guys aren't on the roster to hit. As long as they're not embarrassing themselves with the bat, they're a big addition to the team.
  20. How is this a misdiagnosis? O'Rourke last pitched roughly 40 days ago. That's a pretty reasonable timeline to wait out a decision to go under the knife because it doesn't matter. One month is not going to drastically change when O'Rourke pitches again. This isn't a "go down with an injury in September, go under the knife in March" situation.
  21. I feel morally obligated to finish this scene for you. http://media1.giphy.com/media/7kpQyA3qn2bVC/giphy.gif
  22. Mauer is a fine defender at first but catching the ball isn't very hard. There's an expected level of competency at the MLB level and first basemen catching the ball isn't really note-worthy. AFAIK, scooping and catching the ball isn't a focus of first base defense in advanced metrics for that reason: everybody does it well enough to not make it worth much in defensive value. Again, not knocking Joe, he's a good defender at first... but most of that value seems to come from his range and baseball smarts. Whereas Byron Buxton is doing things at an up-the-middle position that I'm not sure anyone else in baseball can even do physically, excepting possibly Billy Hamilton.
  23. It's pretty hard to do that when Kyle Gibson has been so much worse than Phil Hughes. If someone needs to be ousted from the rotation, it's Kyle Gibson. By comparison, Phil Hughes has looked like Greg Maddux.
  24. Dunno, he'll have quite a time topping dear ol' dad. Didn't something like 25% of the population die during the 90s?
