  1. The thing is that they won't be great or awful. That's off the table, as the AL has some historically good and bad teams this season. We're basically watching a team that might be the 10th pick in next year's draft or the 15th pick in next year's draft. They're not going to break into the top 6-7 picks no matter what happens. So I want to see the wins because a good drafting team isn't going to make or break a system with a +4 draft slot next season. They'll get a good player or they won't, the slot become mostly irrelevant in that range of players.
  2. These are the bare minimum of things we should be doing. But I'll add a third no-brainer: Eliminate private prisons. When your goal is to rehabilitate and alleviate the state and tax payer burden of incarceration, using a capitalistic system of businesses who profit from incarceration is in direct opposition to the stated goal. Their literal business model is to do the exact opposite of what we need them to do.
  3. Yeah, I shouldn't have used the word "possible". Obviously, a .500 season is possible. Whether it's a reasonable goal is the real question.
  4. I agree that there are people who are so bad that they become irredeemable. I'm okay with paying for them to live in a cage for the rest of their lives. But one cannot look at our correctional facilities and say with a straight face that we make an honest attempt to rehabilitate the masses of people who are redeemable.
  5. Rosario has looked better this season but I firmly believe he was a victim of Buxton's greatness last season. I remember doing a comparison last year of some previous Tampa outfields and one outfielder seemed to take a hit every year, despite being a good or very good defender. I don't know why it happens - I have a couple hypotheses - but have never seen an in-depth study done on the subject.
  6. It's unlikely but the Twins have been playing pretty good ball lately (against mostly bad teams, but still). Is .500 a possibility given this roster and its relative lack of experience? I know some people want to see losses rack up for the draft pick but this team isn't full of rookies. There are enough young-but-experienced players who could use a strong finish to the season to get into the right mindset for 2019. I think this team could easily be a 78-79 win team at season's end but really hope they can put together a small run and end in the 81-82 win range.
  7. This is why I want to push Al Franken out on a raft into the ocean right now. He's one of the few people who could square up against Trump in a debate and make him look like an idiot while fighting on Trump's terms.
  8. I think we need to be honest about the cost of not actually trying to rehabilitate.
  9. Thorpe was promoted? Good for him. After all those injuries, the guy is still only 22 years old and now in AAA. Pretty amazing.
  10. Yeah, one healthy, good year from Buxton could mean $30m in extension money. There's little reason not to take that relatively small risk.
  11. I think most reasonable people feel that way. The problem arises when you open the door to capital punishment at all. It may be impossible to open the door to execute the Mansons of the world while not abusing the system to the point where we get to executing children and/or single homicides.
  12. Good post. One thing about second base is that, while it's an up-the-middle position, it's also usually a dead-end position. While second is important defensively, if the player had better range, they'd be a shortstop. If they had an arm, they'd probably be a shortstop. If they had both, they'd be a good shortstop. Occasionally, you'll get a second baseman who can hit and has an arm but third basemen are hard to come by, too. If you have a shortstop with an arm and a bat, you probably don't move him to second base at all, but instead move him to third. There just aren't many examples of second basemen who ended up there despite their talent to play elsewhere.
  13. "Christ, Karen. Push harder. Not all of us have a life expectancy of 75 years."
  14. I used to be pretty neutral on the death penalty. Not really in favor of it but if the state determined someone irredeemable and wanted to put them to death, I wasn't going to get too worked up about it. But over the years, we've shown that it doesn't work as a crime deterrent. It doesn't really save money as far as I know, either, due to the lengthy and rigorous appeal process (which should be in place for this type of situation). And then Texas started getting it wrong in their eagerness to execute people. After I started compiling those various ideas, I was left with one question: Why are we doing this, what gain do we receive on a personal and/or societal level by executing violent criminals? It doesn't deter future crimes. It doesn't really save the government any money. I'm left with one answer: revenge. And that's a horse**** reason to kill someone, especially if you weren't personally affected by the violent crimes that led to the execution (which applies to 99.99% of the people out there). And that leaves a pretty awful taste in my mouth.
  15. Absolutely.
  16. Dunno, there's a pretty significant split between roughly >45 and For example, my brother (eight years older than me so late 40s) and his friends do not play video games today, though they played as teenagers. By comparison, I can't think of any of my friends who don't play video games today (early 40s). I suspect it had something to do with whether you grew up playing video games from birth (which made it a part of your continuing life) or whether you began playing later (which places it as a childhood pursuit to be abandoned in adulthood). Just an observation I've noticed over the years.
  17. Oh, definitely. I'm just pointing out there's a country mile of difference between Dee Gordon and the likes of Ben Revere.
  18. That's a bit extreme. Gordon was a good 2B for three of the past four seasons (it appears he was injured in 2016, his only sub-3 fWAR season). Then the Mariners moved him to center and... not awesome things happened. Gordon is the type of complementary player most GMs would love to have on the roster unless they have an elite guy already at second.
  19. Yep, this. The Twins can't afford to roll out a 5.10 ERA starter for multiple seasons in hopes he figures it out. That time is over. It's time to compete. They tried (and failed) to do that this season but got decent returns on all those expiring contracts as a consolation prize. Try again this offseason.
  20. I do not recall him ever hitting triple digits. Everything I remember (and still consistent to today) puts him topping out at 94-96. Though one of his early problems was a loss of velocity, sometimes inning-to-inning and even pitch-to-pitch... but I haven't heard anything about that happening in the past couple of years, which makes me believe it's likely no longer an issue.
  21. Agreed. Stewart should be in the rotation until the end of the season but I don't hold out much hope for him being an effective starter (or even reliever, really). But he showed flashes of competence in MiLB this season after going unclaimed in the Rule V draft. The front office needs as much face time with him as possible against MLB hitting to find out if he's worthy of a 25-man spot in 2019 or whether he should just be jettisoned and replaced with a younger, higher upside arm.
  22. I thought he was out for the season in early April.
  23. Shocking. Makes me want to strangle the guy.
  24. I’m only following this game from the app and I have to admit I’m fascinated how Santana has allowed five base runners and five runs.
  25. To be fair, Belisle came so late that he barely moved the needle in either direction. I'm not saying I liked the signing or want him anywhere near Minnesota, just that it probably didn't make much difference. The hand was pretty much dealt by the time he came aboard. The front office was a mix of conservative and aggressive early in the season. After all, they promoted Romero pretty aggressively and let him pitch... and then demoted him. A weird season.
