  1. Wait. So they managed to figure out a way to make me want to watch another game this season. Well played, Falvey.
  2. Meh. I figured this was coming, but still... meh.
  3. True, but the Twins could eat $4-5m and maybe split the difference. It all depends what a team is willing to give up for what is essentially a postseason bat. All in all, I think it's unlikely Mauer goes anywhere for a number of reasons.
  4. It's probably the right move to give him one more shot. With that said, still blech.
  5. Gibson made an approach and delivery change last season and has been a significantly different pitcher since that time (roughly 12 months now). This isn't a fluke, Gibson is a different pitcher today than he was early last season. That doesn't mean he can't regress or get injured - just like anybody - but he's a pretty safe bet to be a better, more consistent pitcher than he was earlier in his career.
  6. Mauer won't bring much in return but he's exactly the kind of bat teams want on a postseason roster. A righty comes into the game and you trot out Mauer, one of the most professional hitters in the game, a guy who will make the pitcher work to get him out and also a guy who will eagerly work a walk in a late-inning situation. And given how the AL (and some of the NL) is shaking out, teams aren't looking to make the postseason, they're looking to solidify a postseason roster. Mauer doesn't have much value taking up a regular season 25-man roster spot but on a postseason roster with more space for bench players, I could easily see a team taking him on in a bench role.
  7. I'm actually wondering if the Twins front office simply ran out of time at the deadline. They were crazy-active and moved loads of players over a short period of time. And Rodney was probably at the bottom of that list, as he's not worth much and the team was probably floating whether to keep him for next season.
  8. Austin: good to see him up, may as well take a look at him. Duffey: blech
  9. A pretty underwhelming return on paper but whatever, I don't even care that much. Let's just hope Falvey sees something in this guy worth the effort.
  10. I think a four year extension is reasonable. Gibson is not young and tossing $60m at him in guaranteed money might do the trick.
  11. Yep. If we want to rip Casilla, remember that he was actually a much better player than the guy he replaced.
  12. They can definitely do it with one, maybe two, players. I'm not sure they can just throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks with 4-5 players as they did in past years.
  13. Eagerly awaiting “I, Belisle” to hit direct-to-video.
  14. If only the Twins played every team like they do Cleveland.
  15. Great article, but it fails to mention one kinda important point: all three of these players took their licks at the MLB level and improved season-over-season. It took them time to get to where they ended up. They're great stories and the kind of baseball stuff I love to see but the current Twins team can't afford the same luxuries as the past 90+ loss teams that fostered these talents. With that said, the point is still salient about picking up a load of middling prospects in hopes a couple of them turn into something special (it'd just be nice if they managed to do it before they hit MLB and floundered for a couple of seasons). I like the "inch deep and a mile wide" strategy for picking up these kinds of prospects but if you have a bunch of fence-riders, you'll end up opening yourself to be the victim of some ugly Rule V drafts in the relatively near future. You're going to lose guys you want to keep but aren't good enough to nudge their way past your MLB 25-man and the prospects you really need to keep. But if the front office has a plan and that plan leads to contention, that problem can be "fixed" pretty easily by trading off those fringe 40-man players before it becomes a problem.
  16. Can anyone confirm if this is his throwing kneecap?
  17. He's also three years older with kinda bad MLB numbers in limited time. I'm not saying Austin can't be a useful piece (though his positional limitation is a problem) but I am saying the Twins should not roll into 2019 with him pencilled in at first base (which was literally the point of the post I quoted).
  18. The only guy who wasn't good with the Twins and is good with their current team is Dozier. Lynn's line was ugly but he was solid overall once you got past April's disaster. Pressly and Escobar were good in Minnesota, which is why they brought back the best overall returns in trade.
  19. If a team wants Morrison, it will be at the end of August so they can slide him onto the expanded roster and potentially keep him as a postseason bench bat. Which isn't a terrible idea, really.
  20. Oh god, I hope not. If the team wants to start 2019 with a 1B platoon and Austin is part of that package, okay... I don't love it and it's not optimal, but I can take it if... The real prize here is Rooker, who has an .859 OPS in Chattanooga right now. Either get a real first baseman or aim to have Rooker in Minnesota no later than June of 2019.
  21. I don't really give a rat's ass about the 12th man in the bullpen but christ almighty, call someone up beyond Trevor May. This bullpen needs an overhaul and May isn't even half enough.
  22. Yep. I actually expected this team to be better after the deadline happened. Not that they'd be good, but they'd be better. My goal for the current team is to end up in the 77-80 win range. It's not a lofty goal considering their cupcake schedule.
