Today's Official Trade Deadline Discussion

Awful trade for the Rays. 

 

Another disappointing deadline for the Twins unless there were some deals that we haven't heard about yet. 2015 opening day Twins rotation of Hughes, Nolasco, Gibson, Milone, Pelfrey? Someone call me in 2016 when we finally see some prospects.

There'll be room for May/Meyer in the '15  rotation.  Need more than 5 guys to get through season.  Guys go on DL all the time.

I'm confused by the deal. I don't know much about Franklin, except that he's a solid MI.  Smyly has a 3.92 ERA in 35 G as a starter.  Milone has a 3.85 ERA in 72 G.  We got Milone for Fuld. TB got Smyly (and Franklin) for one of the top SP of this era?  There's more to this, but I wouldn't be happy as a Rays fan.

Smyly is a better pitcher than Milone who was helped a lot by playing in Oaklands ginormous stadium.  Franklin is very highly thought of its just that he was blocked in Seattle when they signed Cano.  That said I agree that, even with the Aball SS, the Rays could have done better.  If this was the best available wait until the off season.  

My point was the Twins could have fairly easily matched this offer (or even improved upon it) and had exclusive negotiating rights with one of the premier pitchers in the majors for a year.  If something couldn't be worked out there were also respectable fall back positions.  There is a lot of potential in the Twins system but a rotation next year of:

Price

Meyer

May

Gibson/Nolasco/Hughes

seems VERY attractive to me.  Depending on how Meyer and May adapt that could be pretty formidable as well.  There's a chance that's enough to put the Twins in the playoff picture.  If the Twins are in contention you probably see Buxton and Sano up sooner than later as well next season.

Not defending FO.  Hey, what if Pelfry is a stud next season?  Can't possibly know if he will or won't be.

You're right we can't know for sure but the fact that he has been significantly below average during his 9 year career and that he's coming off an injury all point to a pretty poor 2015 for Mr. Pelfrey.

I'd rate the day a solid B.

The Milone / Fuld trade was a great move by the front office. Flipping a waiver pick up for legit starting pitching depth is quite the accomplishment - not to mention, the flip happend only a few months after they picked Fuld up...incredible.

With the dollar amount now official, I'm okay with the Suzuki extension. I didn't love extending a guy off a career year when his numbers point to this being a rare offensive season - but I'm not going to be upset over paying $6 million per year to a solid starting catcher.

What keeps the Twins from scoring an "A" in my 'completely made up, no one really cares' grading curve is the lack of movement on the Willingham front. It's entirely possible the Twins didn't have a partner to dance with, but I'd really hoped they'd be able to move Hammer before the deadline. There's always the waiver route in August, I suppose.

Correia will be August trade bait - heck, the team could cut and run if someone claims him. At that point, the spot for May, Meyer or Milone would be the most valuable return.

There was ZERO buzz surrounding the Twins as the deadline approached. Either they played their cards very close to the vest (and something is coming)...or they just didn't play at all. If Suzuki isn't signed to an extension before season's end, this will have been a mighty failure by the front office.

Willngham appeared on several lists of 'most likely to be traded' lists before his July crash.  Too bad they didn't make a push to move him sooner, but considering they got zero for Cuddy or Kubel, not terribly surprising.

An A for the Fuld trade, really amazing to me, frankly.

 

Not a fan of the Suzuki signing, but if they won't play Pinto, it is a B I guess.

I weight the Fuld trade the strongest, so I guess it is a B from me, though that seems like a hollow B, frankly. They added a league median or slight worse pitcher (outside Oak), and signed a catcher over 30 that was AWFUL the two years before this. 

 

I don't see much that really FIXES things, but the Milone trade is just mind bogglingly good....

Who do you think they were going to be able to trade Correia and Willingham to?

I think what the Twins do in the next week or two will determine how this trade seasons gets graded.  If they move Correia/Willingham/bullpen arms then it will have been a good "haul".  If they simply cut bait with some of them that's fine too.  As long as May and some of the AAA bullpen arms are up in the next week I'm ok with the rest.

Love the Fuld trade, somewhat dislike the Suzuki extension, and am frustrated that once again the Twins have a number of players who have no future with the team on the roster going into August.

Andrew Miller is being traded to the Orioles...curious to see how expensive he was - other than Parmalee - the guy is lights out on LH's. He's a free agent after 2015.

He was traded for the Orioles #3 prospect Eddie Rodriguez or something like that.  I am terrible at remembering names.  but the Twins tried to get him for Willingham last year.  I do remember that.

Another trade that wasn't reported here is the Miami-Houston trade.  Jarred Cosart (plus 2 minor leaguers) to Miami for Colin Moran (6th overall in 2013 draft; 3B) and Jake Marisnick (decent OF prospect) and rookie ball flyer.  

Would you have traded Gibson, Parmelee/Colabello and Nunez for Moran and Marisnick?

I think I would have pulled that trigger.  Gibson is walking a very thin tightrope currently and while he has potential to improve Marisnick would slot immediately into CF slot next to Arcia and Moran has All Star potential.

I wouldn't be surprised if Correia or Willingham are moved mid-August. They seem like perfect waiver deal guys. But then again, I'm not sure anyone is even going to want them.

Exactly - it is quite possible that NOBODY wanted them.

Maybe, possibly, perhaps other teams GMs are as smart as the fans at Twins Daily who were desperate to rid themselves of this deadwood.

I'm giving this a B, almost went with a B-, but landing Milone for Fuld is a good thing. I'm indifferent about the Suzuki deal, think we overpaid, by a little, but since we are always under budget anyway, what difference does it make? Would love to hear what they were offered for him so could make a more informed decision, but we will probably never really know. Disappointed we couldn't move Willingham, Duensing, Burton or Correia though. I know there probably wasn't a market for these guys, but part of Ryan's job is to create a market when one doesn't exist. Call the Yankees and say you've been talking with Baltimore &Tampa about  Willngham, are they interested in getting in before he goes to their competitor?

At this point, I'm not sure why they don't just cut Corriea. He won't be back next year, he's not pitching well, and they have a bunch of guys that could use some Major League experience. I also don't see any point in keeping guys like Willingham and Callabello around. Drop one of them, call up Pinto, and make him your DH. Put Vargas at 1B and move Parmelee to one of the corner OF spots. August is a good time to evaluate these guys to see if they are part of a future solution, as they won't be facing watered down September lineups.

My thoughts exactly. Ryan is the one who gave Corriea a two year deal. If he's unable to get a single sniff for him 1/2 way through the 2nd season, who's fault is that? It's not like he's hurt, he's just pitching like Kevin Correia always has.

Ryan said last winter he had to give Gardenhire a better team to work with. He admited he had to do a better job of bringing in players. Is a direct quote on what Ryan thinks of Correia now newcessary to satisy some of hte people here? What does that accomplish. When they signed Correia there was a quote  I rewcall reading thta they thought they saw some things they could improve on with Correia. What they thought did not improve him.  What good does it do for the team to bring that up? When they tried to get Garza after signing Nolasco and Hughes that should have yold you what they thought of the number 5 pitcher.
