Regardless of his age the whole point is to A.) lock him up and maybe buy a year or two of FA. B.) The number you’re paying him is known allowing you to plan a few years in advance and work your roster accordingly. It actually works out better that he’s older as you don’t need to commit to 9, 10 years. A simple 6 or 7 year contract gets you to his 30’s. Within that you need to start thinking who’s gonna take this team in the next 5-10 years. Lewis is a prime pick and depending on the next couple years he might be a guy you want here for the next 10-15 years. The attitude and pedigree in Lewis makes a difference for sure. “Ice veins Lewis!”

But why lock him, to repeat because that is what you do to ensure talent sticks around at a certain rate. It doesnt NEED to be done. But locking him up now at 17 mil a year for 8 years(If Royce is willing) can be better then waiting 3 years. He stays healthy and rakes and now wants 31 mil a year for 8 more that extends into his mid 30s.

Its not rocket science why a team would do it. Its a gamble either way. So its all about what they believe his talent is and what hes willing to take. We just signed Correa to a way bigger deal with worse medicals. So lets not act like getting royce through his prime at half the cost would be some albatross haha.

No, I understand the concept so you do not need to explain it again and again.  Lewis doesn't even have 200 plate appearances in the majors and has barely played 120 games in four baseball seasons at any level.  That's the issue I have.
