Correa potentially available again

Jon Heyman came out last night and said Correa wasn't interested in restructuring the contract with the Mets.  Someone close to the situation said a 55% chance the Mets get something worked out.

So the question becomes are the Twins willing to offer him a contract again,  and at what money and how many years.  Do they try to create a contract similar to Buxton's?  I don't think Correa would be interested in that.  On its face getting Correa for $285 seems like a deal in this market,  but when 2 teams pass on him potentially,  that doesn't seem like quite the deal.  I still think He would give you the value of that contract in the next 6-7 years.  The Twins still have the financial flexibility to pull this off.  However if the medical risk is big enough that 2 big market teams are unwilling to sign him,  should a smaller market team be willing to take on that risk?  The Twins are in the unique situation they should have a better idea of what is going on,  they will also be able to tell if there was major structural changes in the leg since last years physical.   We will see if Correa potential falls into the Twins lap for the 2nd year in a row.

Why would Correa want to be here? The team has done absolutely nothing to improve itself for next year, and they were 6 games under .500 with him on the team. He, like many other free agents, don't want to play for a franchise that isn't committed to at least trying to appear like they want to win. Do the Pohlads really care enough? Highly doubtful. They're too busy with their high-end car dealerships and other investments for the uber wealthy. Building a long-term winning franchise isn't part of their game.

Except I didn't actually say any of that. If you go back and read what I wrote, it started with "I'm done with this front office". In no way did I imply everyone should be done with this front office, much less the entire Twins franchise (which are two wildly different things, really). I was venting my personal frustration at the way this front office approaches offseasons and lots of other things. I didn't attack the front office, I just stated I don't like how they operate a lot of the time and that has led to me being apathetic toward the franchise right now.

Surely you see the difference between me stating an opinion and me telling someone else - a stranger, mind you - how to be a fan.

The front office, while not up to the quality of many others, does the best they can do with a tightwad owner controlling the purse strings. They have little or no flexibility to spend and build a winner for the long-term. They can only maneuver from year to year, and that isn't any way to run a baseball team.

I disagree with that, as my problems with the front office mostly stem from procedure, not budget. But to each their own.

You had 4 teams take over free agency this year, there isn’t much difference that could have happened this year.  It’s a lot easier to be an arm chair quarterback than actually be in the middle of it with the current dynamics. Even still this is the most depth we have had on the pitching front in over a decade.  Some will be coming back from rehab. We have some decent prospects coming up.

For example let’s look at Milwaukee, other than a very nice trade they have done nothing in free agency.  We could go down the list.

it’s not to say they are perfect. I am going to do some research on pitching.  I believe there has been very few pitching prospects since 2017 that have done anything in the MLB and most likely due to overall a poor prospect pool most likely won’t do much.  This comes down to can they develop a #1 pitcher.  They have proven they can develop #3 #4 type pitchers from the poor prospect pool, let’s see what comes from better prospects like Priellip.

I think you are reading far too much into this.  Both Correa and Boras want the highest dollar, and they could care less where it comes from is my opinion.  Cohen has more money to blow essentially, so I would still say the Mets have the advantage in offering a higher contract than the Twins if they are still interested.  I still don't see anyway a smaller contract isn't less than $200 million.  The issue Cohen is fighting is the luxury tax,  so every extra mil in extra AAV is an extra mil in Taxes.   So if the AAV goes up 10 mil,  he is paying 20 mil.   Due to the 13 year contract I would say Cohen is already at a pain point is my guess.  The radio silence seems to benefit the Mets and Correa getting something resolved,  the length of the radio silence continues to point to another team ultimately getting his services on shorter term deal.  If the Mets don't close the deal by Saturday,  My guess is he signs with another Team.  However those able to pay to get something done are just a few.  Twins, Red Sox, Cardinals in that order would be my guess.  Giants have spent more money after the deal fell through,  and I think have a bad taste in their mouth from the fallout of the original deal.   I don't see anyway the current deal goes through and I don't see anyway Correa will put in a clause that negates the contract in the later years if he gets injured.

He has stated several times he doesn't care about going over the tax threshold.

I'm also disappointed in the Brewers for their free agent moves...

Except for what you called "a very nice trade", which is more commonly referred to as "highway robbery".

Milwaukee pulled off the trade of the offseason with that move. Their free agency action has been wildly disappointing but... hell, they really pulled off something else by snagging Contreras AND Payamps for... Ruiz. Are you kidding me?

Move on from CC!!

Extend pitchers that perform this year by July 1st to show good faith & hopefully spend less $. Gray - Maeda - Mahle are all good targets for future. Maeda is 35 but his arm just got a reversal in time with surgery. All worth 3 more years with early success in ‘23!

Hunt for FA needs next year after we see how the young bats develop in ‘23 & we see if our SS of the future is in the organization by August.

Sign a reliever or 2 NOW from FA market.

All spending can happen if we move on from CC.

The front office would be silly to move on from Correa until he is officially signed. If they can get him at 10 yrs for $285 that is a steal. This FO knew the leg was something that would come up, hence the lower offer. They knew a 100% Correa was well over $300+ and the market proved that out. The Twins can afford this deal and still spend on other positions, namely SP and RP. A $285M contract now is cheap in 5 or 6 years when we potentially start to see his talents diminish.

It is a nice trade, but now you bring up something that is interesting, and that is teams trying to find players that will do well within the new rules and that is someone like Ruiz.  Ruiz has now been part of 2 trades for the Brewers, 1 that was trading away Hader which was viewed as one of the worst trades in franchise history and then the 3 way trade which you state is highway robbery. With Ruiz being a key piece in both deals I think ultimately in retrospect we can say he has more value for MLB teams than the casual fan thinks.  Teams see him having a lot of value with his bat and stealing bases.
