Twins injury risks

Here is a link to an article (and linked slideshow) on Bleacher Report that analyzes the risks of injuries to particular Twins players this year. Interestingly, the article ranks the 2012 Twins 7th best of 30 teams in days on the disabled list and dollars lost.

 

Here is an excerpt:

"Despite having a much healthier season in 2012 than they had in either of the previous two years, the Minnesota Twins enter 2013 with a new head trainer despite the top-10 finish in injury stats. Dave Pruemer inherits a team whose best players may be his biggest challenges, but whose most problematic players from last season likely won’t end up on his table again this year."

 

What do you think? Has the Twins training staff been doing a good/better job?

It's hard to say. I do know that when I interviewed Jack Goin in the front office, his team was tasked with helping implement new strategies for monitoring injuries. The are running tests and creating a database that they believe will help them learn more about various injuries and recovery. It is still probably a few years off from actually seeing dividends though.

I wonder how the stats get skewed by the occasional week of "day-to-day observation" that predates a failed attempt to play and then a DL stint.

True, it's gotta be tough to actually measure these things. Too many variables.

 

That said, I think it's clear that the Twins' training staff has made some mistakes, and some pretty bad mistakes. But their job isn't easy, and I think at least half of the animosity directed against them by fans on this board is confirmation bias.

I was thinking this same thing... lots of day to day injuries that went 10 or more days before the guy could play again. That's going to skew the "days on disabled list" category. I'd also be curious how much they track minor leaguers, or for that matter, how far back they are gonig. The handling of Wimmers in particular was dreadful. Neshek and Baker, though not minor league, were both handled in much the same way.

As I recall, they fired the head trainer but retained the medical staff. I think fans basically had concerns about the whole arena -- diagnosis, treatment and prevention. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

 

Thanks for the link -- his red/green/yellow system is interesting. And seems pretty accurate but there are always a few surprises.
