John Bonnes Site Manager Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 In the same game where Hicks was crazy good, Kyle Gibson was crazy bad. Gibson struggled to locate his fastball and gave up six runs on eight hits, a walk and three wild pitches -- all fastballs -- over 2 1/3 innings in Minnesota's 10-6 win over Philadelphia. Gibson talked about how the only problem was that his fastball command was dismal, and that he had the same problem in the Arizona Fall League. For a guy coming back from elbow problems, this seems like something to keep an eye on. Gibson struggles with command against Phillies | twinsbaseball.com: News

Mark_RM Verified Member Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Probably not too surprising for this to happen. From what I've read/heard, post Tommy John velocity tends to return fairly quickly while command can take a while.

But I guess that's just a personal preference.

It's a starter/reliever thing for me, but great call on the comp. Also, Gibson strikes me as more of a likeable Nook Laloosh rube than a veteran of the California Penal League:http://www.minnpost.com/sites/default/files/KyleGibsonTwinsHeadShot210.jpg "Raye Anne, right? Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 No surprise. Same thing happened in the AFL. In his first 2 starts, he was tremendous, good velocity and sharp slider. Then he struggled with his control for a few starts and was hit around a little bit. I think that is very normal and expected. They talked a lot about trying to keep him from doing too much too fast this spring. He could be fighting the dreaded "dead arm" earlier than others too. Gibson is very much a control pitcher, so I'm not worried about the control at all.

Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 Gibson pitched in 3 A games: He had a great game, an average game and a mediocre game. Cannot take any one of them out of context and make conclusions about Gibson and his control. Maybe he woke up in the wrong side of the bed or the 3 hr bus ride to Clearwater stiffened his back or something. Who knows? I am zero concerned about Gibson. It will all play out...
Halsey Hall Verified Member Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I was informed today that Gibson has already been told he's going to Rochester.
