He is the same age as Yu Darvish, has a better career than Yu Darvish, has a better recent history than Yu Darvish, is cheaper than Yu Darvish, and has been injured less often than Yu Darvish.

 

I'm wondering if the same people who wanted Yu Darvish are the same people who don't want Gio?

 

In any case, Gio was never gonna happen. The Twins would have picked him up sooner if they wanted him. Knowing the Twins, Gio issues walks too much for their liking.

 

As for him going to the Brewers and this being a risk for them: Gio played for the Brewers last year. They know him.

I didn't mean to imply I am a "Gio booster". But if we are going to carry 13 pitchers and not acquire a good reliever, it may have been better than the status quo.

2018 was poor? It was league average over 32 starts. He's not as good as he once was, obviously, but it was a stretch to bring up one bad AAA start as meaningful evidence of his decline at this point.

 

Even if you don't think he's appreciably better than our 5 starters right now, he's probably not appreciably worse than a few of them either, and there's still probably a case that the Twins could have been better off grabbing him and stashing someone in the pen for a bit. Our immediate SP depth doesn't look too appealing at the moment.

Its not the one AAA start that means decline.  It is the downward trend in all statistical categories.  The downward trend in velocity. It is typically better to get out in front of these things instead of saying he will continue to get past results as the declines continue.  He should be expected to be worse than last year and even worse in 2020 etc.  He is in decline, I don't think there is any disputing that. 

 

An NL team that badly needed a starter was probably the best case for him.

 

Stashing starters in the bullpen doesn't always work well.  Perez has been much better since leaving the bullpen.  Mejia probably would be too.  We have depth without Gonzalez, having him wouldn't make our rotation any better.  He was not a fit here.
