Game Thread intro: Twins vs Orioles 7:10pm cdt 7/5/2018 ad

Once upon a time, there was a little boy who grew up in Rochester, Minnesota. He sometimes did his homework, when there wasn't a Vikings or Twins game to listen to on the radio. He postulated that when he was responsible, and actually did his homework, the sports teams for which rooted would do well. And while he didn't do a comprehensive stastical analysis of that hypothesis, it seemed to make sense at the time. Probably a strongly affected childhood sampling bias in play. "It was the 80s. Reagan was president. These things happen."

Now you must content yourself with just imagining what an odd 30 years does to a growing boy, all the strange adventures he must have gotten into in the meantime, how this strange naivite has both helped an hindered him through different life moments. It may be much less clear what his homework is today, but with an open eye, and a smile, today he is resolving to test this hypothesis once more. Homework is gonna get done. The Twins are going to up their game accordingly, or so he hopes. If it doesn't work out quite that way, at least there will be homework progress, which will be its own reward.

If you wish to enter into the scientific spirit of testing this hypothesis, well and good. What homework are you up to?

Subjects of interest:

1. Math: be sure to use an = sign if you do any because equality is important.

I hope the final score is of the form

Twins runs scored = Orioles runs scored + x such that x is a positive integer.

2. English: the proper use of dumpster fire pictures would be in the passive subjunctive.

But i been camping enough i like fires as much as the next.

3. Drama: Bargain Bard quotes.

"Tis not so deep as a well, nor so wide as a church door, but [the hanging curve] will serve."

4. Geography: Baltimore.

It's in Maryland, eh? I think it is the capitol, no? Well, of Maryland. Not the US of A. That would be DC. Whose got a fine motto, so i hear.

5. Elective: Shop? Music? Current events?

This would be your higher grade show and tell part of the day. Do share! What do you find to be practical skills?

Baltimore:

Pitching: Andrew Cashner ®

Batting Order: (with fielding positions)

to come (as in round the mountain)

Minnesota:

Pitching: Aaron Slegers ®

Batting Order: (with fielding positions)

to come (as in the best is yet)

79°F= 26°C + rounding error. Clear?

And this is out early because that is how homework should get done!

You showed your work, so that's at least a step in that direction!

Thoroughly enjoyed the intro!

Chris Davis vs. LoMo. Who can be a worse #5 hitter?

LoMo’s been awful but Davis has been historically bad - he’s getting on base about 70 points below Morrison!! Poor Showalter keeps writing his name into the lineup because he’s making $23m a year.

I always thought that capital of Maryland was Annapolis. When did it change?

I bet it didn't.

See, this is what i get for not doing my homework... Someone got any red pens?

I guess i just felt like assuming the capital was the city with the baseball team. Shows what i know.

Who went down for Slegers? I'm sure it wasn't Belisle being cut....probably a young player....

Moya. He was excellent in 2 innings on Tuesday. But we can't leave our young pitchers up here to develop when there's so much VP to squeeze out of Belisle here in this lost season.

Also Magic Fingers Wilson is back in the line-up. He truly is our every day catcher. I guess we're never going to see Astudillo or give Garver more than one game to get his bat going. But the drive for .100 continues!

Hmm ... by that logic ... Minneapolis is the capital of Minnesota? Can you imagine the capital of New York being The Bronx? Or Queens? And Florida must have two capitals? ;)

Yeah, doing your homework is wise.

Yeah, doing your homework is wise.

Yes, i can imagine that. Which is perhaps the problem. And i can thus pitty all the states without capitals.

Facing major league pitching is exhilerating... well i'm sure it is, but it can't compare to showing up to a final exam with most of building blocks of the class, but not really having fit them together before, and trying to come up with coherent answers to everything in the allotted time.

If you want accurate information, I suggest Wikipedia, not GT! :).

Polanco should be batting 3rd between the Eddies. He's been stinging the ball since he came off the DL.

Play Astudillo at catcher! He surely caught Slegers in Triple A.

This is common sense stuff, Molly.

How many games will the Twins win in this 4 game series? Any predictions?

Personally I'm focusing on this game, which I think we'll take BTW. We have tons of other threads for the Big Picture.

Had to look it up: in 17 states the largest city is the capital.

And how many have baseball teams?

(include minors for extra credit... Oh right. I'm supposed to be the one doing homework...)

Do you mean the capitals or the largest cities? (Of course, everyone who is anyone knows the answer to that question is yes.)

Hopefully zero!

Ushers at the game probably will let you root for whomever you want, but at a sports bar or in my living room, someone rooting against the home team probably will be escorted out.

You made some mistakes in that lineup-

Somehow, you've got Dozier batting 3rd, and you actually listed the names Morrison and Wilson.

--Oops, wait, sorry--

I guess you were only quoting....

:banghead:
