Nice TT article on Romero

Loved this piece. Would be nice to see him drop an MPH or two off the change and get a bit more bite to his slider. Seems to me the reports on his slider were that it was a plus pitch, were they not? If so, I'm guessing he didn't have his best stuff there, which makes the start even more impressive.

Slider has been a plus plus pitch (as has his fastball.)  And it was yesterday.  Check the pitch values at fangraphs

As far as the changeup goes,  you do want a pitch that is a good 10 mph plus slower than the fastball.  FWIW, Rodney's is about 12-13 mph slower (so was Johan's before the arm issues.)  The thing about Romero's is not velocity, it is that tailing movement that almost makes it look like a screwball that is great.   In my latest scouting report of Romero for my prospect list, I described his change as "close to plus now" and still standing by that.  Wish he had a slower pitch, but so far so good. Plenty of time to develop a fourth pitch ;)

That was a really good write up on Romero. I guess my only concern is him putting too much torque on his pitching arm to get the ball to sink like it does. Power sinker pitchers like Kevin Brown, Carlos Zambrano, and Brandon Webb were dominant for a time but thanks to the stress of throwing such a hard sinker it prematurely ended Zambrano’s and Webb’s career. Sure Brown pitched for 17 years, but there is some contraversy into how much steroids helped Brown in the latter part of his career.

I was really impressed by Romero yesterday. I was surprised on how low he was on prospect rankings coming into the year. I thought he should be considered in the Berrios tier. I think maybe only Klaw was that high on him.

I'm sure he'll have some dud outings for us but hopefully he and Berrios remain fixtures in our rotation for the next several years.

While he might have left several of his sliders hanging, on many pitches, particularly those to Granderson, the bite and break he can get when he throws it well. Regardless, it was a pretty good outing for him especially considering the nerves he probably had.
