Roster for WC game

Because it's just a one game playoff, I imagine you can leave 3 starters off the team (and just have Santana and one of Gibson or Berrios if he fails early)

 

Additionally you should be able to cap bullpen arms a bit as well.

 

This should leave the Twins with a deep bench:

I'm not sure I agree that Duffey is a better choice than Pressly.

 

Edit: Actually, I'm sure I don't agree with that.  Since the Break, Pressly has a 2.65 ERA and a WHIP of 1.  Duffey has an ERA of 5.68 since the Break, a WHIP of 1.58.


I don't think they take Gibson AND Berrios. One, more than likely. But Gee has been so effective the first time through, you can bank on 2 plus innings from him if needed. Maybe up to 3.

And they probably only take 10 pitchers. If they are using more than that, they are probably losing anyway. It's unfortunate that there are only 15 position players available, assuming Sano is a no go.

Matt Hague could have been a useful player to have. MLB experience. Can play 3b, 1b and is serviceable in lf. Right handed bat. Too late for that. He would likely be a more useful player than Niko Goodrum will be. Goodrum is pretty much limited to pinch running and he's behind Granite and maybe Adrianza in that role. The sad thing is that Adrianza might be the best option as a pinch hitter vs LHP.

Roster can change between rounds. Also, I think it was 10 years or so ago that they allowed teams to replace an injured player during a playoff series. It should be noted, however, that the Twins only have 15 active position players. In other words, the only candidate to replace anyone is Sano.

 

Kinda poor planning IMO.

 

It's worth noting that if the ability to replace an injured player had been available in 1991, Gene Larkin likely would have been replaced by Pedro Munoz. Larkin was unable to run basically at all.

In a one game WC, you take pitchers out the minute they get into trouble.

It might end up looking something like this:

 

Santana 3 1/3 IP

Boshers 1/3 IP

Berrios 2 IP

Rogers 1 1/3 IP

Hildenberger 2/3 IP

Busenitz 2/3 IP

Belisle 2/3 IP

 

That being said, I would only have Santana and Berrios as the SPs on the roster. I don't trust Mejia at this point, even if he is lefty.

not sure I like Mejia starting anything right now, wildcard or ALDS. Wouldn't mind him being a long reliever or something like that to be counted on for a couple innings...

 

As for Sano, I heard somewhere he's taking BP...  Not sure if that's true or not, but he might get some playing time next week if that's the case.
