drjim Provisional Member Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Can we actually be somewhat optimistic about this team?
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 How 'bout them Gophers??!?
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 I think this is an NCAA Tournament team. They've got all the right pieces: size, shooting, point guard play, and good defense.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Another good thing is that only Akeem Springs is a senior that plays. This team is already good now, and they should be even better next year. The future looks really bright.

Losing a bench guy, bringing in 2 legit guards, and the 18 and 19 Minnesota classes are really strong.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Can we actually be somewhat optimistic about this team?Yes......although I take no responsibility if they land on the "failed to meet expectations" heap that most Gopher teams end up on.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Yes......although I take no responsibility if they land on the "failed to meet expectations" heap that most Gopher teams end up on.Well, to me, "failed to meet expectations" = "got to the tournament and then maybe even did something" So I'm ok if they fail to meet my expectations.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 Another win tonight for the Gophers. Amir Coffey and Akeem Springs were great offensively, and Reggie Lynch played well on both ends. Other than that, it was a game that was a little rough, but still a nice win. And Amir Coffey had a monster and-1 dunk late in the game that's worth looking up if you haven't seen it.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 I HATE this team. The ********** ******* *******'s are getting my hopes up.
biggentleben Verified Member Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 Wow. Coffey was impressive to watch last night. I'd not seen the team yet this year. They have a lot of athleticism and depth. There's also plenty of immaturity, which could bite them come tournament time, but they're definitely fun to watch!
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 The Gophers finally made it back into the rankings, at #24 in both main polls. They're also 5th in RPI and 31st by Ken Pomeroy and his rankings.

bluechipper Provisional Member Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 When was the last time?In February of 2013. I'm usually pretty optimistic going into seasons, but this team has been even better than I thought they would be. Hopefully they can keep it up get some revenge on Michigan State on Wednesday.

Mason had an off game and the team still has the depth to take care of business against a decent team.

That was the year they lost to Shabazz and UCLA in the tournament. It's fun to look back at the stats and remember those guys.

I was thinking of the team that topped out at 9 and then didn't make the tourney after Nolan went down.

I can't remember if that was when Hoffarber had to play pg or if that was a different year. That 2012-2013 team got all the way up to 8th too when they started 14-1. It went downhill after that pretty quick and barely held on for a tournament spot.

His player usage and substitutions that year were ridiculous. Was glad he was canned.
stringer bell Verified Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Didn't the Gophs destroy Shabazz & Co? I thought they won easily, but got killed in the next game.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Didn't the Gophs destroy Shabazz & Co? I thought they won easily, but got killed in the next game.Oh yeah my bad. They beat UCLA by 20, and then lost to Florida.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Tonight was just one of those games... No one played well, and everything seemed to go MSU's way. I'm not overly worried.
drjim Provisional Member Posted January 12, 2017 Author Posted January 12, 2017 I had low expectations for tonight and they were blown out of the water. I'm not too worried, but they absolutely need to respond.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 MSU had a slow start to the season and weren't helped by Miles Bridges getting hurt. With him healthy, watch out, they are going to make noise. Gophers will bounce back.
biggentleben Verified Member Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 One of the reporters I heard mentioned that the Spartans are essentially the perfect kryptonite for the Gophers team this year, and that they really won't run into that this year in the conference outside of the Spartan.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 Wow that was ugly. 37.7% shooting and 2 made 3's for the Gophers. Amir Coffey needs to be more aggressive offensively. Penn State isn't awful like they usually are, but that still has to be a win, even on the road.
biggentleben Verified Member Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 Coffey looked very different after that flagrant foul. That was a big issue in the offense. His aggressive slashing in the couple games I'd watched so far were a big part of the offensive rotation, and when he was tentative, it led to guys not being in the right position offensively many times.
drjim Provisional Member Posted January 14, 2017 Author Posted January 14, 2017 Bad loss, but road losses never kill you. They need to respond.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 Personally I thought the Gophers were on a bit of an unsustainable run, they were due for some fall back. You're going to have nights like this, especially on the road. Coffey definitely needs to be more aggressive driving the lane, especially when the team is shooting this poorly. It will turn around again.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 After a week off, the Gophers looked pretty good against Wisconsin today, but another loss, in OT. Nate Mason still hasn't found his shot. 3/14 today. 10 assists though, but they need him to score. Ethan Happ is annoying to watch. He plays so weird, but he's so good.
