Donuts to dollars it will be as riveting as a discussion comparing the careers of Dave Stevens and Scott Klingenbeck.

I beg to differ.

Don't worry about Meyer becoming a superstar.  The Angels demoted him all the way down to the rookie leagues before moving him up to A+.  At A+ he has already had a very bad game.

Alex Meyer started in AAA tonight in the rarefied PCL air- elevation 4226' in Salt Lake City -

6K in 4 IP.

0 walks.

0 runs.

2 hits.

37 strikes.

17 balls.

Looks like he's started on the way back to relevance.

First Alex Meyer pitch, 98 MPH.  Second pitch, 99 MPH.

My issue is with the field staff not getting the most out of Ricky, not the front office getting rid of someone who showed nothing.

But really.... it was just me saying "are you serious? we're on a 13 game losing streak and Nolasco pitches a shutout?"

Albers has pitched 2 shutouts in his major league career, although one game was only 8.1 innings and the other was a complete game. Gol dang, the Twins better throw him out there every 5th day because ya never know when he might get another. They are going to rue the day they let Brian Duensing get away, he pitched a couple of shutouts.   Yup, pitching a shutout is the thing to keep you in the starting rotation

The trade should have been summed up as the Twins sold Alex Meyer for 8 million dollars and they did so because they believe at this point he will never be a consistent and healthy major league player.

Ha, I kind of thought you were being serious, but this makes so much more sense.

I'd call it ironic that Nolasco goes and throws a gem, but doesn't it actually seem to make a ton of sense given the way the season has gone? What's the opposite of ironic?

He has been rehabbing in these starts. Starting for their AAA team today, and likely will get called up if healthy in September. Donuts to dollars, Meyer will have a better MLB career than Whatshisface who the Twins got back for him

That is a bet based on health and consistency though.

Santiago has 700 IP at a 103 ERA plus. I get luck had been a factor but I will take the under on Meyer doing that. If one of the two ever become relevant it will be Meyer though and that is why the Angels did the deal

Not quite -- Nolasco had some absolute value too, maybe about as much as Meyer.  $4 mil each?  In any case, both of their absolute values together netted us an ~$8 mil option on Santiago.

I guess my assumption is the value of Santiago and Nolasco is a wash.

What we got was either 8 million or an option on Santiago and we gave up Meyer for it. I think the new GM will walk from Santiago and we effectively sold Meyer for 8 million.

It is interesting that, so far, the guy who has historically underperformed his peripherals is now outperforming them, and the guy who has historically outperformed his peripherals is now underperforming. Probably not a meaningful sample yet though.

Nolasco is probably happy to get out of Minnesota.  Santiago is probably unhappy about going to Minnesota.

When the honeymoons are over they'll both go back to their norms.

I don't think that's quite right.  To get our $8 mil, we have to non-tender Santiago this winter, but Nolasco would have still been under contract for 2017 and could have been salary dumped alone to save a few million.

Definitely not a meaningful sample, especially since Nolasco was performing just the same for the Angels until his most recent start.

The only GOOD thing about this disaster of the Alex Meyer trade (Who I'm pretty sure will be a legit SP for the Angels in 2017) is that we can non tender Santiago at the end of the season, thus leaving a rotation spot open for May.

There are already spots for him if management thinks he can do it.

May's only hope is that the future regime wants him to start.  Before that happens I wouldn't think about it.   You're only setting yourself up to be disappointed.
