Article: Twins Minor League Leaderboard (Through 5/6)

We did not post an updated Minor League Leaderboard last week since we were prepping for the April hitting and pitching awards documents. Today, we provide an update on who is leading the Twins minor league system in a variety of hitting and pitching statistics.

 

Our choices for the April Minor League awards were:

• Hitter: LaMonte Wade
• Starting Pitcher: Stephen Gonsalves
• Relief Pitcher: John Curtiss

We are now five weeks into the season. There have been a lot of transactions the last several weeks which obviously has an effect on player’s statistics. Usually. As players move up to a higher level, they will need to make further adjustments.Here is a quick look at how the Twins affiliates are performing. Obviously win-loss record is secondary to player development, but learning how to win can be part of the process.

• Rochester is 13-15.
• Chattanooga is 12-16.
• Ft. Myers is 15-13.
• Cedar Rapids is 17-12.

With that, let’s look at the minor league statistical leaderboard.

 

THE HITTERS

I don't get the whole Herrmann for Palka deal. Palka is no baby, but he's also not old or some milb journeyman. It appears he can hit, hit with power, and run some too. And he's traded for an athletic backup catcher who just never seemed to get over the hump?

To be fair, Herrmann has done much more at the AAA and MLB levels than Palka. There are concerns about his strikeouts, similar to Walker. He's not old, by any means. It was a nice haul for Herrmann.

I wouldn't know. I will take your word for it. Small sample of course. Maybe he just needed a change of scene.

Nothing against him. I'm just saying he had every chance and then some to stick with the Twins. A change of scenery sometimes is the best solution. Unfortunately, by comparison and in the case of JR Murphy, so far it's been the worst possible solution. The good news is that, on paper, Murphy is 3.5 years younger, definitely the better catcher and at least as good, if not superior at the plate (OPS+ of 74 vs. Hermann's OPS+ of 49).

"Good Catching" and Chris Hermann are two things that don't go well together in the same sentence.
