Squirrel Community Moderator Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Anyone watching for Serena? Really hoping she wins … no one has won a 'same calendar year' grand slam since 1988 (Steffi Graf).
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 She should skate through her side of the draw
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted September 3, 2015 Author Posted September 3, 2015 She didn't yesterday … at least not that first set. I've always loved her game … so freakin' powerful. Wish I had a backhand that was one iota of hers … sigh. It's a great game.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 She usually plays like crap in the early rounds does she not? Seems to me she either wins a tournament or flames out early. Who can stop her on the hard court? Nobody I can think of.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted September 3, 2015 Author Posted September 3, 2015 I just think it's time for a calendar year grand slam winner … and she's a good one to do it.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted September 6, 2015 Author Posted September 6, 2015 It'll be a Serena-Venus quarter-final match up!
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted September 7, 2015 Author Posted September 7, 2015 Go Venus!Seriously? Why? Serena has a chance for a calendar slam ... something that hasn't been done since 1988.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted September 9, 2015 Author Posted September 9, 2015 Wow, that was an amazing match. Their facial expressions. Both chasing a milestone. The teary-eye-inducing embrace at the end. Serena wins, but wow. Both are amazing athletes and amazing champions.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted September 9, 2015 Author Posted September 9, 2015 Go R. Vinci!I'm curious why you don't like Serena?
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted September 11, 2015 Author Posted September 11, 2015 I know ... but there's a reason it hasn't been done since 1988 ... the field of play is much more competitive today. Steffi would not have the dominance today that she had back then. Also, if Seles hadn't been taken out by Steffi's stalker, Steffi likely wouldn't have had the dominance and as many championships as she had. But, it was what it was and I don't want to take that away from Steffi. She was a great player. So sad for Serena.
DaveW Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 What a disappointing match, Serena choked plain and simple and did more than enough to beat herself. She just looked mentally exhausted the entire match. I think she would best be served taking a month or two off, then coming back fresh and going for the Selena Slam again in 2016. Honestly, I would be SHOCKED if she didn't win at least two of the grand slam events next year minimum.
Pius Jefferson Verified Member Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 She really never had her A game the entire tournament. Up until today it was never in doubt she'd win but it wasn't with the ease you would have expected. In related news 'Joker' is one win away from taking three of the four Men's Grand Slam titles. He reached the French Open finals losing to Stan Wawrinka.

It's why I've liked Venus for quite some time (her not being an ass) but have never been a fan of Serena. My mom has always been a big fan of Serena though, but she roots for all American tennis players.

I remember some issues she had with a line judge, rightfully so, but her explosion on court about it, not cool. But we see players in baseball yapping at the umps all the time. But over the last couple of years she's really pulled it together. And Ive always been a big fan of Venus'. What she's done for women's tennis and how she's always carried herself, well, she's always been a favorite. But Serena, wow, her sheer talent and athletic abilities, incredible.
