I think that is a good point.  But Boras almost always goes year to year and takes his guy to market. If the Twins do that with Sano he is a 6-7 year player for us and nothing more.  So naturally a Sano deal is before a Bryant deal anyway.  Or he will be fitted for pinstripes, Dodger blue, or eating clam chowder.

Yes Boras clients usually like to hit free agency, but not always.  But this seems like even more of a reason to do it soon, because if a Boras client like Bryant actually does take a pre-arb extension, it's almost certainly going to be outlandish.

The effect might be: Bryant, an elite comparable going year-to-year, could inflate the arb market.  Meaning Sano could see a further bump in his pay, beyond what he'd normally receive those years.

It could turn out that Sano could inflate the market for Bryant in arb.

Sano has 11 HR and a .978 OPS in 184 AB.  Bryant has 19 HR and a .843 OPS in almost 500 AB.

Well, except that Bryant is scheduled to hit arb a year before Sano (as a Super 2)... but they could kind of one-up each other through the years, as each might have a claim to more than the other guy.

Discussion of a long term contract for someone who has not even faced every team in the American League a second time may be fun and interesting, but it's also very premature. Before we put Sano in the Hall of Fame, let's see how he reacts to all of the forthcoming adjustments, shifts, etc. Way too soon for this discussion.

What type of shift protects against home runs, and doubles off the wall? ;-)

After reading Souhan's article on the Twins this a.m. I wanted to see if opinions have changed from this Aug 2015 article. I am very concerned about Sano's strikeouts and defense. He was out of shape last year, came to camp in better shape this year, however I get the feeling he isn't driven to be great. Souhan points out he (and presumably Twins front office/coaches) were expecting more leadership from Sano but he seems to spend all his free time in the locker room on his phone. Would really like to get a feeling that he was 100% all in as a MN Twin.

All that being said I am in the camp that we should try to lock him up through at least a couple of free agency years. If he fulfills even 80% of original expectations he is well above replacement level. In today's market is that $100M+? With last years less than stellar year it may be the right time to strike.

Apologies--didn't see the Extension Candidates thread until after posting this one! Would have added to that one.
