I think Molly is Going to be Refreshing

When Molitor was hired I didn't have a strong reaction either way.  As fans, I just don't think we really ever get enough information to be good judges of things like this, but I digress.

 

As spring training has approached I've heard several interviews with the news Twins manager and I have to say I've enjoyed listening to him talk about baseball.  He's articulate and interesting without really being "chummy" like Gardy was.  He seems very intelligent and analytical, if not in a SABR kind of way, at least in a "I will think for myself" kind of way. 

 

It also appears that, despite his long tenure in baseball, he's not hide bound to convention.  One small, but interesting tidbit was that pitchers will not be shagging many, if any,  fly balls during BP.  Of course, this is a long standing baseball tradition.  Molitor's view was: "what's the point?  Why take the chance of getting hurt?  Could they use the time in a better way?"

 

If this is his approach, I think he will soon gain the confidence of Twins fans.

I like the "attention to detail" stories that have emerged from the first days of camp.

 

Perfect attitude to instill as all these new young players make their way into the major leagues.

I think his biggest obstacles will be the non-strategy things.  Checking/massaging egos, dealing with umps, standing up for players, dealing with losing streaks etc.  By all accounts, he's a baseball genius.
