Could Marlins Signing Cueto Mean Trade With Twins Coming?

Twins Video

It was reported this morning that the Marlins signed Johnny Cueto to a one year deal with a club option that guarantees him $8.5 million. Why do the Marlins need starting pitching? They need bats. Add in Enlow's DFA, which doesn't make a lot of sense unless he's going to be traded, and a thought emerges - are the Twins and Marlins about ready to do a deal with hitting going from the Twins for pitching from the Marlins? Maybe Kepler, Larnach, and Enlow for Lopez, Luzardo, or Rogers?  Anyone hearing or reading anything?

I haven't heard anything yet but it makes as much sense as signing Gallo. You have to think a MIA trade is going down, somewhere. Hopefully w/ MN.

Here is my proposal

Twins Get: Pablo Lopez, Edward Cabrera

Marlins Get: Max Kepler, Royce Lewis, Emmanuel Rodriguez, Emilio Pagan, and a PTNL.

First of all, welcome to Twins Daily!

Second, that feels like a whole lot to give up for those 2 arms. Royce and Rodriguez are both top 100 global prospects. I'd be pretty upset if the Twins gave up either of them for Lopez (only 2 years of control left), and I don't know that I'd really love giving one up for Cabrera, but he has a lot of control left so that'd make more sense to me.

Kepler is a free agent in two years and the Marlins are non-competitive in the the league's best division. I just don't see them having any interest in him since they aren't contending for anything. They'll want young position players.

And probably young pitchers too. Everybody wants young pitchers, especially if they're trading pitching.

The Marlins may be interested in a player for now (Kepler, Arraez types) and some guys who are pre-arb too (Miranda, Larnach, Kirillof, Martin types). They may be interested in an A ball player but that is too far down the road because Miami is building their team for this year and the next few seasons. Finally, if the Twins can only protect one player, it should be Emmanuel Rodriguez. The Twins should not listen on him.
