  1. I am finding that I enjoy this series of articles very much, Seth. Thanks. This one also made me think about Cedar Rapids, the community. It really is a great place. Although I will always be a Badger State guy, what an upgrade for the organization when they moved from Beloit to Cedar Rapids. And Banuelos winning this award really reminds us how small this world is. Those ties are amazing.
  2. Point on, Nick, thanks. One move you didn't mention is extending Kyle Gibson. I would put that right up there with Berrios as 3b. Don't know what to think about Buxton. And something no one has mentioned, when he was approached for an extension last winter he turned it down. So his lack of performance and time of service would be a non issue had he negotiated last year. But the bigger question is whether he will ever be more than a defensive/speed guy? Sano is another question. To be honest, I don't know how the Twins prepare for next year with both of these guys. They are likely untradeable and must be penciled into any starting lineup. Unfortunately, both could be all-stars or busts in 2019. Can we at least hope for one of each? And as I stated in another article this morning, I have a feeling we are going to see a fairly major trade for a starting pitcher over the winter.
  3. Good presentation of where the starting staff is at, Ted, thanks. I have thought for some time that the FO doesn't need to do anything to the starting staff this winter. But, will they? Certainly don't need to go out and get any retread starter or another Lance Lynn. Could see them roll the dice on a AAAA guy, hoping to catch another Kluber. Also could see them upgrading Odorizzi with a trade including him, one of the seven potential young starters not named Romero, and another lower level prospect...perhaps one of the players obtained in July. Maybe the biggest news we could hear this winter is signing Gibson and Berrios to extensions...get this done. But as pointed out above, to improve in 2019 the bullpen has to get better. And all indications are the guys we all have wanted to see from Rochester aren't the answer, at least for 2019.
  4. My first take on yesterday's game is to remember that we were playing the Tigers. They are not a good team, plus they were without Niko Goodrum. I like the energy Willians Astudillo brings to the game. Not only is he a decent hitter, he can play several positions while also being a capable catcher. The Twins need to find a way to have 13 position players next year with Astudillo a leading candidate for #13. If not, he certainly should remain on the 40-man roster and be in Rochester to fill in when/if one of their catchers is injured. He does have options available, doesn't he? Also liked Gonsalves performance yesterday. This September has been an excellent opportunity for him, Stewart, DeJong and Littell, to get their feet wet. This month should give the Twins FO enough information to assist in their planning for 2019. Is it realistic to expect that they can find a #5 starter from this group, including Romero, Mejia and Slegers? Has one performed well enough that they may interest another team so they can be a part of a bigger off-season trade? With Thorpe and Graterol also on the horizon, maybe the Twins put together a package to bring in a young quality starter who can improve the #3 spot in their rotation next year and beyond. [i am not suggesting they trade Thorpe or Graterol.] It is likely that 7 players vying for one starting spot is too many and some type of move is necessary.
  5. Nice story, Seth, Thanks. Looking at this list, have any of them played in the major leagues? I believe not with the Twins, but not certain if any played elsewhere. What would be interesting is learning what they are all doing now. Are some still in the minor leagues? Are any out of baseball, and if so does anyone know what they are doing?
  6. Thanks for the reply, Tom. Its helps to understand your thought process going thru this process. But a .338 BABIP for Arraez should be expected as that is at or lower than his actual batting average much of the year (taking out the first couple weeks at AA after the promotion). To be honest, I would expect his BABIP to be higher next year.
  7. Got to be excited about that top 3. And what can you say about AK after a season beyond what anyone could have expected. If 2019 is anything like this year, expect to see him at Target Field next September. And you have to be so happy for Gelly, what a year. What was a shock, to me at least, was seeing Arraez at #8. Checked to see why and to be honest, can't understand that three of you didn't vote for him in their top 8? Also, a bit surprised to find LaMonte Wade as an honorable mention. Really had a disappointing year. I will be surprised if he is added to the 40-man in November. Thought the quotes from Zoll were a big plus to your report, Seth. Liked his comment about 'pushing' Rooker. That together with how slow he started the first month makes one wonder if he can make it to the Twins by next summer? Thanks for all the work this year guys.
  8. Next spring is going to be interesting. Assuming the Twins don't sign any starters over the winter, their Top 4 starters next spring will likely be Berrios-Gibson-Odorizzi-Pineda. That leaves one opening for Mejia, Slegers, Stewart, DeJong, Romero, Littell and Thorpe. Doubt Thorpe will be ready and will start at Rochester. That leaves six others battling for one spot. Mejia is out of options, so all the others except one will be the eligible to be starters for the Red Wings. Will the FO be comfortable going into the spring with that group? Or will they sign one veteran free agent just in case Pineda doesn't make it? With all those numbers, most likely scenario may be that we see a trade over the winter.
  9. JR and I were there maybe 10 years ago, or a bit longer. Kind of in between your visits. Enjoyed the ballpark and downtown Cleveland. Remember staying at the Marriott where the Twins were also at. The one thing I recall is having breakfast a few tables from Scott Baker and his wife. Remember she was visibly upset about something. Also recall a nice restaurant area several blocks west of the Marriott. Didn't do any of the fun things you do first time in Cleveland, rock and roll hall of fame, sub, etc. We did those while passing thru every fall when taking JR to BC. Just enjoyed the games and hung out talking about father/son stuff.
  10. What a great year for Wells. Really hope he can continue pitching like this as he moves up. What was shocking to me is that three of you did not include Lewis Thorpe in your Top 5. Curious why? When I look at this group, I believe he has the best chance of joining the Twins at some time next year AND being successful. I believe Graterol has the highest ceiling of anyone in the minors, but don't expect him being ready to join the Twins in 2019. Hope like hell he will, but its too much of a long shot. Should be fun following the career of Colina the next couple years. Stocky and strong, would the word 'bulldog' be a good description of him and his pitching style?
  11. Here's a question for Seth, Steve or others. It is likely the Twins will keep two lefty relievers on opening day next year. One will be Taylor Rodgers. If they have to choose between Moya and Vasquez, who do they pick? Moya has more experience. Will he be the better choice on April 1? But does Vasquez have a higher ceiling? Curious what you think.
  12. Everyone wanted to see all these young pitchers. Well, we got em. Maybe one of the reasons the front office wasn't pushing all these guys up is that they had a feeling they either aren't all that good or ready for the big show. All those walks last night was worse than being in a dentist chair waiting for him to pull a tooth. Maybe the real pitching talent in the organization is further away, Class AA and lower.
  13. What a year for Vasquez. Can he become that special short man like the Indian's Miller? Have been on the Moran bandwagon for over a year. My question for November is who of the rule 5 eligible group will be left off the roster? Seems they won't have the space to add all the guys at risk of being lost. Will it be Reed? Anderson? Jay? Wade? Was a bit surprised looking at the ERA's of the 'Other' group. All, except Moya, were in the mid 3's. And I don't know what to think about Busenitz. Very good at Rochester with some really ugly outings when with the Twins?
  14. Why are baseball and professional sports unions different than most other unions. If you have a carpenter crew, they all get paid the same unless you are an apprentice. So a player's first year is at a fixed rate as a rookie/apprentice. After that, the league takes 50% of the revenue and divides by the number of players. Everybody gets paid the same. Build in some type of bonuses for doing X, Y and Z. Maybe the bonuses can double or even triple your annual return. That's how the trade unions do it, or at least did back when I was building things. Why not baseball?
  15. Interesting how Williams and Jeffers were both question marks on draft day. Did the Twins draft both because they could sign them cheap and use the money on others taken in the top 10? We will never know. Three months later, both are pleasant surprises. Do they continue to perform well and make it to the Twins? Only time will tell, although the odds are long. But wasn't it fun watching both of them mash all summer? And I loved the Twins signing Severino, even though it took up nearly half this year's International Pool.
  16. Love the Evansville ballpark, Seth. It is an old one with a wooden roof over the grandstand. JR played a Legion tourney there many years ago. Believe it was one of the main parks used for the movie, "League of their own."
  17. Sounds like the Twins may have found a good one in Cabezas. Also sounds like a sharp young man who understands the cultural differences between Miami and eastern Tennessee! This is one of the categories where I wish you would include the players from the DSL. Expect there would have been lots of #1 votes for Anthony Escobar if you had. Coming back from TJ surgery, what are your thoughts on Benninghoff?
  18. Count me among those that believe they haven't done all that much wrong. The problems leading to this year's failure are the result of bad luck, lack of performance by several critical parts of this team, a bad decision by their shortstop and a failure by most of the free agent signings who all looked good on paper. I hope they don't make too many radical moves this coming off-season. Rather, they should focus on signing a few of their in house youngsters, Berrios, Rosario and Gibson...well, Gibson isn't young anymore. Then sink or swim next year to some extent based on whether or not the two super prospects, Buxton and Sano, perform. If not, going into 2020 write them out of the plan and move on. They also need a second baseman. Go get Eduardo back should take care of that. As for the on field staff, agree that there seems to be something missing and a change might make sense.
  19. Congrats to the Miracle, what a year! Thank you Seth, and everyone else for keeping us up to date on another season of minor league ball. It really is appreciated. One question, when is the last time the Twins had two champions in one year? Expect there have been a few years, but I can't recall when. Who is this Alex Phillips, Seth? Checked his bio and appears he signed with the Twins a few weeks ago. Certainly was surprised to see him pitching late in the game last night rather than Moran. Have a great day guys, enjoy your off-season.
  20. What a game from Lewis. And another good game at the plate for Miranda. Add in a good start from Graterol and they had a chance. Unfortunately, not a lot going with the bats anywhere else in the lineup. Let's get it done tonight rather than going to game 5! What a wonderful season for the Kernels. Congrats! Too bad they couldn't extend it one series further and play for the championship. Was a long summer for lots of those college guys who began playing back in February. Many will get a couple weeks off before reporting to instructs. Lots of talented prospects in this group that will be exciting to watch next year and beyond.
  21. I'll second that thought, Seth. Will be sad not having baseball to read about every morning. And that ends when these two teams end their run, sure isn't much fun reading/talking/thinking bout the Twins. I may be sounding like a broken record, but another great game from Miranda. 2019 could be real special for that kid. And wasn't it great seeing Jax suck it up and pitch so well? That AFA training to be a leader of men in combat probably gives him an added something to fall back on. Win one of three and they are in, why not today behind Graterol? 12 hits and 5 walks and the Kernels scored only 3 runs? They just couldn't get enough key hits to support a great start by Sammons, who has had a nice year. Now they need to win today. Didn't OSU face several elimination games on their way to the college world series championship? Larnach came up big for them, maybe he will do it again today?
  22. Great games for Baddoo and Miranda. Don't know about his D, but Miranda's bat just may play on the big stage. Sure has been good in the playoffs. Am I correct and the Miracle have both Graterol and Cutura available for 2 of the remaining 4 games? I know Jax hasn't been as sharp the last couple times out. Expect the innings have begun getting to him. See that he was pitching on 5 days rest, will have 7 days rest today so maybe he will be closer to what he was earlier in the season. Would be nice to travel over to Daytona with a 2-0 lead!
  23. Very interesting group, Seth. Expect most of us follow the Top Prospects closely. But I am less familiar with this entire top 6, except for Duran who came over in the trade. Wouldn't it be exciting if one of these guys actually made it into the Twins regular rotation a few years from now. And looking at these numbers seems to indicate it could happen. Speaking of trades, what a haul for Lance Lynn. Twins gave up two months of a guy who was doing very little for us. In return got a power guy who just may be a part of their immediate future. The fact they also got a low level prospect like Rijo is almost too good to be true. Congrats to the FO for that deal! Gotta also do a shout out to Schulfer, after all he is from central Wisconsin.
  24. Great article, Ted. And great discussion! Expect AK will be in Chattanooga in the spring. What happens after that remains to be seen. We can speculate all we want (yes, I want him at Target Field asap), but he will determine how fast he advances. As for me, will hold my breath and hope that this kid turns out to be that special player we thought we had a few years ago with Sano and Buxton.
