Article: MLB Draft Day 3 Thread
rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I could see them needing to spend a few extra dollars to sign Holland, and maybe need to go a bit over for the kid from Rice (Canterino). But other than those two, I have to believe as you do Gunnarthor that they will have a significant savings from their total pool amount. Other than the Auburn second baseman, I don't see any of the college players taken after round 10 requiring more than $125k...although I don't have any hard information. So far thru 30 rounds, they have only taken three high school players headed to college...not counting Cavaco. Once their top 10 is signed, there should be a lot of dollars available should the Twins be real high on any of those three. One, or all, could be in for a nice windfall!- 111 replies

Of the last 15 picks (round 6-20) all but one have been college players. And all but one of those (13) have been pitchers. Yes, this is the oddest draft I have ever seen. Sure looks like they saved some $$$ in the first 10 rounds. Will they need to spend some of it on any of these college guys? And little to we know that their strategy to pick some hot high school kid(s) got messed up by someone else taking him a few picks before they were on the clock.- 111 replies

Well there goes the idea that they would pick a high school player with a big upside in round 11. Took a big right handed pitcher out of Cal-Irvine, Tanner Brubaker.- 111 replies

Not in my mind, JLease. That's because I have always seen Rortvedt as a future starting catcher for the Twins. Might have to change that a bit as Garver is looking like a lot more than a backup. Now see Garver and Rortvedt sharing the catching duties beginning sometime in late 2020 or more likely in 2021. As Rortvedt's bat improves, expect he will see some DH duties on off days while Garver will also DH or play some first base. Didn't mention it, Steve, but in addition to a 1-2 night with a walk...he got on base a third time when he was plunked with a pitch.

I can't remember, but think it was his first appearance after getting called up. Littell looked good, really good hitting 95 with his fastball and a breaking ball that was right where it was effective. Then he had the clunker last Friday. But he recovered and gave the Twins a lot of innings. I remember thinking back to when Joe Nathan joined the Twins as a former reliever in the Giants organization. Thought I saw some similarities, yet, will admit that was so long ago my memory isn't real clear. We can hope, can't we?

Must say I have the least excitement from the first two days of any draft I can remember. Not saying it was a bad draft as I have so little information to base any opinion. Just nothing that jumped off the page and got my blood running. As you commented above, Andrew, the Twins may have lots of dollars in the bank to make a couple splashes in the high school pond when the draft continues. Looking back at the last three years, they took Michael Helman, Bailey Ober and Tyler Benninghoff in the 11th or 12th rounds of each of those drafts. If memory serves, they spent more than $125,000 to sign each, I believe much more for Benninghoff who was headed to TJ surgery.. Let's hope we see something exciting when they go on the clock later this morning.- 111 replies

Will always be happy with a 3-1 record for the day. Well, 3-2 if you count the DSL Twins 2-1 loss in which lead off hitter Misael Urbina had his first 0-3 day while playing center field. With Cave and Wade heating up, Rooker healthy and Arraez back in the lead off spot, maybe the Red Wings can get back to .500 (21-33) by late-July? If they are to do so the pitching will have to cooperate. Littell had his moments during his recent stay with the Twins. Does his relief appearance last night indicate that is where the Twins see him in the future? And isn't it a beautiful day when Blayne Enlow was Pitcher of the Day and Wander Javier Hitter of the Day? In just seven games, Javier has shaken off the rust of not playing for over a year with his average and OPS edging close to .300 and .800, respectively. When everyone was doing their lists of top prospects this past winter/spring, I asked whether Javier should be ranked up with Lewis/Kirilloff. Have a feeling that come next winter we may see Javier in one of the top two spots...but first he needs to show us what he's got and that begins by staying on the field. Yes, all is good in Twins country!

Another college shortstop in the 7th round. I will assume that some of these kids can/will play elsewhere. With all the talk about lack of pitchers being taken, went back and counted how many went in the 6th round. 20 of the 30 picks were pitchers with all but one from college. Yes, this does appear to be a different draft.- 171 replies

As much as teams say they don't draft specific positions, rather take BPA, I think you are right that there was a focus on catchers the last several years. It certainly wasn't a secret that the catching depth throughout the organization was shall we say poor. With the three headed catchers on the Twins roster along with Rortvedt and Jeffers in AA and A+, lack of quality catching is no longer a concern. I expect had the catcher from UNLV been available at #1, they may have taken him. He wasn't. Now they may not feel they need to focus on getting catchers in this draft, rather go with the BPA. Yet they will certainly draft and sign a few, but they could come anywhere from here thru #40.- 171 replies

If Holland was a steal who fell because of an off year, is there a risk he will do what Rooker did following his junior year? Will $360,000+/- be enough to discourage Holland from returning for his senior year in hope of going higher in the 2020 draft, much higher?- 171 replies

I have been disappointed in Hand not being with the Twins ever since seeing him selected by the Marlins back whenever. Doubt the Tribe would trade to a team in their division...but one never knows if they decide to pull the plug on a rebuild.

Has Kirilloff been infected by the Wander Javier disease? Please be a short stay on the IL. Could the Twins biggest need be an effective lefty for their bullpen. Coming into the season we had at least three internal candidates: Mejia-injured, Vasquez-getting K's but allowing lots of runs every fourth or fifth time out, and Moya-has been really, really disappointing. Expect one of their moves over the next 45 days will be adding one good lefty to their pen. The DSL Twins won their second game of the season, 8-1, over the Nationals. Misael Urbina led off as the DH, going 2 for 5 with a pair of doubles.

Speculating that the Twins were opening a roster spot at Rochester before returning Arraez to the Red Wings. Expect we will eventually learn that they got cash. With the International signing period closing in 12 days, doubt it would be slot money as 2019-2020 International money can't be traded until after July 1st...or is it the 2nd?

I really hate days when the organization goes 0-4. And the DSL Twins don't play on Sunday, so no help there. When searching for something good, saw that Sammons and Sands both had solid starts. Blankenhorn's home run continues his excellent play at AA while Kirilloff continues settling in with a 2-5 day. At Cedar Rapids, any day with Javier in the lineup is a good day. Hopefully, his average will get above .300 soon so he will get a promotion to the Fort by early July. Maybe Lewis' bat heats up so he can move up to open a spot for Javier. Now time to sit back and see who the Twins take with their three picks tonight. Will they be lucky, or good, and have one of the three become the next superstar that everyone else failed to select?

Before everybody goes crazy thinking about the Twins signing Kimbrel, ask yourselves one good question. Is he a good fit for this team? A big part of why this team is winning like they are is because there is unbelievable chemistry amongst guys that seem to both like each other and like playing with each other. Part of that is because many of them came up thru the minors together, winning at a lot of those stops along the way. I know nothing about Kimbrel, but if he isn't a really good fit for this team signing him will be a mistake. And he doesn't have to be a jerk, just not the right personality to blend into what this team currently has.

Well that was fun, then nail biting, then fun again! Guess we needed every one of those runs. 104 games left and 60 wins will get us 100. Don't want to bother with the math, but that is less than .600 winning percentage, or almost a hundred points less than they have been winning the first 2+ months. Can Smeltzer repeat his first start? I really, really, really want to take 2 of 3 from the Tribe.

Good seeing Cave heat up following a slow start after being sent down. Expect Rochester's lineup will get another addition tomorrow when it is likely Arraez will be returned. Looked at Kirilloff's last 10 games, .351 average with a pair of home runs and only 6 strikeouts along with 6 walks. Took a few weeks to shake off the rust, but seems he is back to being the Alex Kirilloff we all expect to see. And what does Duran get for his excellent start, his 5th loss in 5 decisions. Seems to confirm that wins and losses doesn't tell us all that much. Also good seeing Winder continue to dominate the Midwest League. I know TD doesn't include the DSL games in this report, but they began their season yesterday with a 13-4 loss to the Yankees. After battling for the championship last season, this season could be long if wins are what you are looking for. Can't believe how young this team is with 21 of their 34 rostered players having no, none, zero professional experience. Granted, not all the rookies are 17 years old, but this may be the youngest, most inexperienced DSL team I remember. The best news was that Misael Urbina played center field and was in the lead off spot. He was 1 for 4 with his hit being a double.

Last Monday I thought if the Twins split with Milwaukee and Tampa, then took 2 of 3 against Cleveland, it would be a great 9 game stretch. Split with Milwaukee...check; Split with Tampa...check, with a chance of winning the four game series. Then on to Cleveland. This team shows no sign of letting up from playing at the highest level. Key injuries, Sano, Garver and Cruz, haven't caused them to miss a beat. Will they maintain this pace for the rest of the season, not likely. But we also wouldn't have expected them to maintain it for the first two months. So let's stay buckled in for what might be a heck of a ride!

I thought they would have a lot of problems getting everyone protected this year also. Then took a look. Smerltzer is no longer a concern as he is on the roster. I see 8 or 9 players that will likely be added: Blankenhorn, Jax, Hackimer, Diaz, Raley, Alcala, Graterol, Duran and Javier. There are a few others that could play themselves into consideration by fall, but the above group probably need to be added or lost. When I look at the current 40-man, there are lots of players that will either be gone or can be removed so I don't see this being a problem.

Thanks Seth for doing these each month, it is appreciated. Seeing that .385 average and 1.025 OPS from Raley, surprised he didn't make the Top 5. Was it because he got injured and only played about half the month? Count me amongst those who had forgotten about Diaz by the end of last year. Considering he was Rule 5 eligible and no one selected him in last December's draft, guess the rest of baseball also forgot about him. Doubt he will be eligible this December, eh Seth? And it is always good seeing first round picks doing well. Twins may have gotten it right last June. Would be great to get a top starter with a mid-round pick.

4-0....Love it! Nice seeing Cave heating up a bit. Expect he will be needed at some time during the long summer. If the Twins can find a way to get Thorpe to keep the ball in the park, he could be very good. Can't wait until Wednesday to see Balazovic back on the mound.
