The day I found Nick's Twins Blog years ago changed my life for the better. The only thing worth looking at in the papers was the box scores. Just ignore them, let their fabled culture of access be the meteor that sends them the way of the dinosaurs. More Nick, Seth, Parker and Carole, thank you very much.

2018 Twins: The Year in Debut

Was that CJ Cron Astudillo got to pop out? Walked off the field like a boss. He knew it was an out as soon as he let it go!- 16 replies

What You Need To Know About Nelson Cruz
Ebby Calvin Laloosh replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great article! Sounds we should save a little money, throw back to the player/manager days and have him act as DH and hitting coach. Everyone seems excited about how he may work with and unlock Sano somehow. That would be great and is the obvious comparison. I'd like to see him work just as much with Buxton. Both those fellas need to figure out how to recognize and hit big league breaking stuff. Seems like Cruz's approach in the past has focused on just that. -
IMPORTANT Dick N Bert Update
Ebby Calvin Laloosh replied to Vanimal46's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Morneau seems to be the only one with any talent. Hawkins might have a bit, but I think he just needs more time behind the mic. I can't have the sound on games when Smalley is on...I can figure out which end of the bat to use on my own (I can't listen to him say "big end of the bat" one more time). He starts talking about a point, then can't figure out how to end the thought and six pitches later he's still rambling on. Bert has phoned it in for a couple years now, he just reads the media guide, says the pitcher should bend his back and laughs about eating worms every once and a while. I thought Torii would have some potential, but he is awful...Stick with the Canuck! -
Maybe the prettiest swing I've seen in my lifetime. A work of art. I watch baseball for things like his swing, Santana's change-up, and Mike Trout's Mike Troutness...Thanks Joe!

MIN 9, DET 3: Vive La Tortuga
Ebby Calvin Laloosh replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I sure don't like the Opener. Anyone have some stats on how our Openers have done this year? Sure seems like they give up a lot of runs. Maybe I just notice it more because I think it is such a dumb idea...- 22 replies

How about enforcing the rules already there (batters stay in the box) and moving the fences back? Keeping guys in the box MIGHT shave a few minutes from a game and seems so easy and obvious. And it's a rule already. Guys are bigger and stronger than ever and seem to be hitting the ball farther (I have no data to back that up but it seems to be the case). Move the fences back to a point where the top 10-15% of power hitters can reach it if they get a hold of one. Where that point it, I don't know but with all the data being collected it shouldn't be hard to figure out. I'm not arguing for every field to have the same dimensions, keep the quirks, just move the fences back. Everybody else stops swinging for the fences because they can't reach it. More line drives turn into doubles and triples, which are far more entertaining than strikeouts and walks. Admittedly, I haven't thought this out completely, but it seems pretty easy. Maybe it's too expensive to remodel all the stadiums. Not sure what it does to OF defense, but it should would skyrocket Buxton's value, even if he never hits. There could be a whole host of other things I haven't considered too. Thoughts?

MIN 6, DET 0: Lynn Shows Will to Win
Ebby Calvin Laloosh replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I really liked the effort and the emotion from Lynn. Seemed like he didn't care when he was getting shelled and now he turns in a gem and is pissed. OK, kind of weird, but as long as the gems keep coming, stay mad. I didn't like two guys getting cut down at the plate in a scoreless game. Both guys, Adrianza and LoMo were out by a mile. I can't remember the last time I saw someone thrown out at the plate on a wild pitch.- 31 replies

What's Going On With Logan Morrison?
Ebby Calvin Laloosh replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He looks so frustrated up there. It's tough to hit in that state of mind. I would suggest a couple games of going up to bat looking for a walk. That's not an ideal approach for a DH, I know but neither are infield pop flies. Reign in the swinging at bad pitches and look to go 1-2 with a pair of walks every night for a week. It just doesn't look like he is going hit his way out of this slump. I am struggling to see any improvement over the course of the season so far. -
There is a great scene in the book The Brothers K that fits into this discussion. The father and one son are setting up a bullpen in the back yard and drawing the strike zone on the back stop. The father can't get it right and ends up drawing a bunch of different strike zones that he remembers from different umps he pitched to. He eloquently pontificates about figuring out an umps zone and then trying to make it bigger or change the shape with some mind games and body language. He then goes on to talk about hitters doing the same thing with an anecdote about Ted Williams and an interview he gave. When I watch a game and recognize that this is going on I think it's fantastic. It's another nuanced layer to a game that seems relatively simple on it's face. That being said, I wont stop watching baseball if the balls and strikes are automated. Everyone seems to hang up on consistency and this is the best way to get it. I think all you regular TwinsDailyers would love this book. Great book about life and philosophy revolving around baseball...sort of. Check it out and let me know what you think. The Brothers K by David James Duncan.

They tried to enforce the batter staying in the box rule for about a week. Then gave up on it. They've shortened up the break between innings a little and that helped, but the way bullpens are used now and the need for ad revenue are going to make the game longer than it was in the 20s. Tough to do much about those issues, but an easy target is the mound visits. Keep the hitters in the box and the catchers behind the plate and see where that gets us. If we still can't shorten the games then let's change some rules. I suppose you could argue that we are already at that point. How bout each team that wins a game in under 2hrs 45min gets a bonus?

I'm not sure whether the pitch framing stats flush this out or not, but my eye sure did. Watching Castro v. Suzuki catch is like night and day. I seem to recall many times that Suzuki would set up inside, the pitcher misses his spot and maybe hits the outside corner but because Suzuki has to lay out to catch the ball there is no chance at getting the call. Castro is so much quieter behind the plate even on the pitches that miss by a mile. Just a nicer catcher to watch play.

Twins fire Dougie Baseball
Ebby Calvin Laloosh replied to gunnarthor's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I'm a big fan of Dougie Baseball. I like players who look like they are trying harder than everyone else. Yeah, guys like Robbie Cano are good and fun to watch but they make it look too easy. My favorite players are the ones who do well, but make it look hard. That's the way I played growing up, max effort at everything or else it isn't gonna work. That being said, he sure sounds petty after being fired. If that's the way you handle it, it just shows they made the right decision. We don't need that vitriol in our minor leagues. I'm still blown away that Falvey and Levine weren't allowed to pick their own manager. I don't see much point in evaluating them based on this year. They are using someone else's pieces. Since the draft I've said "It looks like they have a plan." Let's let them execute it and then see whats up. I hope Molly goes next and then anyone else they want to fire. Gotta let them do their thing for a minute and see how it goes. Otherwise, why hire them? -
Let's remember some "Twins guys" thread
Ebby Calvin Laloosh replied to DaveW's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Not sure if he made the HoF... Jarvis Brown. -
I had a similar discussion about Eddie with another fan a few weeks ago. It's so frustrating after 16 OF assists and a solid stick in his rookie year he showed all the tools you could want. Then it looked like his brain might have failed him. It just looked like he was not playing smart at all. Hacking away at goofy pitches, throwing the ball wherever he felt like (I think he thinks he can throw everyone out, anywhere). It's just so frustrating that it's easy to overreact. I said "I'm done with Eddie." then bamo, the Eddie I thought we were getting in 2015 shows back up and absolutely sparks this little WC run (at least at the plate). I over-reacted to Eddies frustrating mistakes because it felt right. I see the error in my ways now. Also, isn't improved defense a major reason this team isn't an embarrassment like last year? Trading Eddie and trotting out Grossman wont help that.

I don't get the Smalley love. I can't stand listening to him broadcast a game. He starts talking a mile a minute before he even remotely knows how he'll finish the sentence. And at times seems to have a tenuous grasp on the language. His "big end of the bat" comments have surpassed Burt "downward plane" BS as the most obnoxious term in Twins territory. Latroy seems to be the best fill in guy, and he's not great. I do feel like the more games he does the better he'll get. I don't think Torii is cut out to be in the booth, good for a few games to mix it up but I couldn't deal with a whole year of him. I like Bert but he seems like he has been phoning it in for a year or so. Time for someone new... NOT ROY!

Colon....Release? Trade? HOW ABOUT KEEP!
Ebby Calvin Laloosh replied to Twinfan & Dad's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Every time he pitches well Dozier says "I hope the other guys were watching, he pumps the strike zone all night." To me it seems like he is talking directly to Gibson...throw strikes, stop nibbling! Unfortunately when Gibson does that he gets crushed. I'd be OK signing Colon for the 5th spot next year. He sure is fun to watch. I can't figure how how his stuff plays anymore, but it does...most of the time. -
Why Can't Mauer Drive the Ball to RF?
Ebby Calvin Laloosh replied to DrNeau's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I think it's the short porch in left at CDH. It was too easy to hit a ball into The Nook, grooved his swing for that and hasn't been able to change. It's a shame really, I think he could have been a good hitter... -
Buxton - Twins all-time defensive GOAT

Ian Kinsler: Angel Hernandez needs to find a new job.
Ebby Calvin Laloosh replied to SF Twins Fan's topic in Other Baseball
It seems so simple to fix. The stats have to be available on umps. I assume the league must have an analytics department, just analyze the umps using the data, make the data public and bingo. Just like every FO does with its players, use the data to look objectively at the performance. I don't understand why this is an issue. The bad umps should be easy to identify, for some reason the players can identify them pretty easily, even the fans can see them, but the MLB can't? Just fix it. -
Making and verifying in-game substitutions
Ebby Calvin Laloosh replied to spinowner's topic in Other Baseball
Common sense! Everyone in the ballpark knew what Molly was trying to do. It's the same double switch that's been happening for over 100 years in baseball. Whatever Molly said and the ump heard is unknown. It really doesn't matter, we all know what the intention was, even Dodgers fans. Just figure it out...quickly! That being said, Molly screwed up somehow. If the ump blew it, Molly would/should have protested the game immediately. He didn't, as far as I know, which leads me to believe he blew it. Didn't really influence the game, I don't think, but an inexplicable (at the time) 25 minute delay is just nutso for something like that. Between Maeda's snails pace and the Twins inability to make a simple substitution, that game was brutal to watch. Good thing we don't have to throw pitches to intentionally walk a batter, that's really helping pace of play.
