  1. The AL playoff field is virtually all set, with one exception: Detroit. Yes, the Tigers (at 17-17) are realistically the only team that could, in theory, catch and replace the Twins in the AL playoffs this year. And we've got 5 straight games against them starting today. Including a mini double-header (I'm beginning to hate those 7 inning games BTW). Sweeping or dominating this series may essentially clinch the series for the Twins. Losing the series or gosh forbid getting whooped means we're in panic mode. Should be interesting.
  2. Yeah, I guess pursuing controlled guys does make sense - for some reason my mind was just focused on the "rentals" when I made that post. But you're right when it comes to the guys with years of control.
  3. Why any team would trade valuable prospects this year is beyond me. I think most teams are looking at 2020 as an exhibition season, and so are about 75% of the fans. Play the hand you're dealt and if you get lucky on the river card you might just win the whole thing. Nothing more nothing less. I'm frankly kinda baffled to see that any trades were made at the deadline.
  4. He's indeed looked better as a hitter lately, it's not been unnoticed. That said, his defense....yikes.
  5. Same - the bad at-bats are just awful. During the Twins' big inning, Cave came up with a runner on 2nd and nobody out. He should have done what was needed to get the guy to 3rd. Move the runner over, hit a grounder to the right side....instead he struck out on 4 pitches. It's just bad baseball. And lots of bad defense last night too. Aside from Maeda, none of the new additions have done jack squat. And where would we be without Maeda BTW?
  6. Agreed. Zero sense of urgency. A few reasons for this IMO: first, all the guys on the DL right now. Starting with Josh Donaldson - Twins brought him in to fill a power-hitting role in the infield (ie: hit as many HR as Schoop and Cron combined) and he's done zippo, zero, zilch, nada. Buxton...well we knew that would happen. Secondly, all of these bullpen games and throwaway games organized by Rocco. Seems like he's content to flip a coin every other game rather than going for the jugular. Rocco is always playing the long game. In a short season, he might just be making a mistake. The time to rest guys and take your foot off the gas is when things are locked up - not now. Very frustrating. Side note: feel bad for Nelson Cruz. Dude is just doing everything he can to carry this team and his numbers are unreal. When does he start getting frustrated?
  7. If you like the benefits that baseball players get, maybe you should have pulled up your bootstraps and become a baseball player. In seriousness, I've never understood the hate for professional athletes and their salaries. Sure, if a guy gets paid and stinks, I get the booing. But they've got unique talents - like actors, writers, etc - and they get paid the going rate. Comparing a baseball player's job, or that of a world class symphony conductor to mine is apples and oranges.
  8. Twins already made their trade this year - Ildemaro Vargas for cash. We're not going to see any more deals and I'm happy about it. In a season that could still collapse at any moment, I see zero reason to part with a prospect in 2020. I think the Twins feel the same.
  9. I've always felt the same. A 40 year-old guy throwing the same 78 MPH pitch 90% of the time just seems like a recipe for disaster....like you, I've been surprised with the good results. But when I see him get hit hard, I'm not surprised either! Twins lucky they got away with 1 win here. The offense seems to have 1 guy carry them for stretches: Kepler, Cruz, Sano, Gonzalez....but it's rare that everyone's "on" at the same time. Bust Josh Donaldson shouldn't be able to hide from blame. Injuries aren't anyone's fault, but it sure is frustrating to get only 5 games from our $100 million man. And he played quite poorly in those games also.
  10. Shane Beiber is now 6-0 with a 1.35 ERA and has 75 Ks in 46 innings. He's the best pitcher in baseball right now and should easily win the Cy Young award in the AL. Sucks the Twins lost, but what'ya gonna do?
  11. It's okay, we have Mr. Maeda going in the first game, he'll give us at least six!
  12. Since August 10, Sano's hitting .353.... Eddie Rosario and Max Kepler are having nearly identical offensive seasons (Both hitting around .230 with 6-7 HRs, 10-15 walks, 16-18 K's, and even their OPS is nearly the same). Dobnak is 5-1 and leads the team in wins. Kenta Maeda could be 5-0, but Rogers has blown 2 games where Maeda was in line for the win. Lost in this short season is the pennant race. With MLB handing out playoff spots to half the league, the Twins are all but guaranteed a playoff spot and many of us have stopped paying attention to the standings. Go ahead, peek at the AL Central standings, they might surprise you....and maybe scare you a bit. Twins are currently ranked #9 out of 15 in team batting in the American League.
  13. I think you give Rogers one more chance. Remember, earlier this year the guy was completely lights out in his first few games. Looked absolutely unhittable. I think you let him in for the next save. If he blows it or even gets in trouble, it's time for a shift. On the other hand, if he goes back to his lights out stuff, you can just give him a pass on his recent rough patch. It happens.
  14. How crazy is it that Cleveland demoted two great players (for personal reasons) and they have virtually ZERO offense....yet they're just a half game back and have won 6 in a row. If they had a couple more bats they'd be even more dangerous.
  15. Jose looked great. His next start is against Cleveland, good to see him warming up! Jeffers with a dream start to his career. Despite the throwing error a few games ago, this Vargas character seems like a nice addition. He seems to be able to hit. Season's just about half over, how crazy is that.
  16. I turned off the game after Kenta lost the no-no. I came here to see how the hell Rogers blew it or what went on....so yeah, no matter how bad things are, there are people that want to read it.
  17. Holy cow Maeda is ON FIRE!
  18. Maeda is the ace right now. Dobbers is a solid #2. Jose and Jake I think were sadly very negatively affected by the delay and it did affect their mechanics. I think they'll get back on track.
  19. Thank god it's them and not the Yankees, Rays, or A's.
  20. Great story! During the off-season we'll have to make a thread "baseball game stories and player run-ins" or something like that.
  21. What do you give up for Bundy in a compromised season that's constantly in danger of being cancelled and half the league is making the playoffs? I honestly think the only people thinking about trades are the fans. MLB teams might make a few minor moves (like the one you saw between MN and AZ) but I can't imagine you'll see any deals bigger than that this season.
  22. Thing about Berrios is that we actually HAVE seen him dominate before. Is he off to a slow start? Yes. So is Donaldson - he didn't do anything before the injury either. Garver's looking awful too. If you aren't a fan of Garver or Donaldson, you'll say they're terrible. If you ARE a fan of those guys, you'll point to their history. Frankly I just want the Twins to win ballgames and I think most of us feel the same in the end.
  23. 100% agree. The problem with never using your good bullpen guys in a "deficit" game is that you're not giving your offense a chance to come back. To make matters worse, the Twins pitchers that do pitch in "deficit" games tend to make deficits much larger.
