  1. Good Point on Austin, Now how comfortable are Twins fans going to be going into next year with him and really nobody behind him? Austin will be 28 at the start of next year (actually Saturday) with a total of 330 major league games, and on TD everybody hates the old guys and loves the shiny prospect, so if he has a bad start the call will be for Rooker even if he isn't ready. See Gordon! IMO signing or not signing Mauer really depends on how the FO designs the 3b, 1b and DH positions next year. If the FO has a good plan with a back up plan besides an AAAA guy in triple A, I will be fine with or without Mauer.
  2. How has been Mauer been a drag besides Salary? Did the Twins miss out on any free agents first basemen the last few year? I mean last year they went out and got the second rated in Morrison, and I am pretty sure nobody that signing Hosmer for the price San Diego paid would have been a good idea.
  3. How does Mauer "deprioritize winning."? Which year? I see nobody ready in the system ready to take the job and no real free agents either. I love your idea on Donaldson and Sano. Both have a history of injuries and not having a capable back up for that plan would be a complete failure of the FO. In that scenario Mauer would be a great fit for 80 -100 games at 1B and DH. Now if the Twins FO can figure out a way to improve on Mauer and have somebody(s) ready to fill in for injuries or if Sano has another year like this year, I would be 100% behind that.
  4. Then why stop at the opener Idea? How about Berrios, Gibson, Romero, Odorizzi, Pineda, Mejia pitch 3 innings 50 times. That leaves between 500 and 600 innings for other relievers. Then you have Thorpe and Graterol and maybe somebody else to open. Really how much minor league time do you need to pitch one inning? Now you are down to filling 400 innings, Seems simple. On top of it all you never have to worry about injury because they should have really low pitch counts.
  5. I think if Mauer comes back it will be for more money than people think, the Twins will have quite a bit of money to spend. Unless of course they some how manage to land Manny or Harper.
  6. Is that really true?
  7. Having bullpens pitching games is completely different than an opener. I would think more would be more open to the idea of setting up a game with 3 guys pitching 3 innings and then having a relief pitcher ready if and when needed. Currently the Twins are using "Opener" in the minors, which could have huge unintended consequences. For example how do you know if you have True starter if they are not given the chance. It could reduce how other teams view prospects, thus reducing return in trades. Also if you are a stud high school/college pitcher would you rather sign with a team that has an opener strategy or not?
  8. I disagree, I was at that Tampa game that lasted 5+ hours in heat with my Son (10). Everybody around us was annoyed with the pitching changes, not knowing who was even pitching. I won't go to another game that is has that strategy.
  9. don't forget a loaded farm system. I mean it has to be right, we on TD seem unwilling to trade anybody from it?
  10. Hey if baseball wants to continue to drive fans away, by all mean continue using the opener strategy. I can understand in the Twins and other terrible teams case of wanting to see what they have in young pitchers, but I am not sure this does that. I agree with Bill above, why limit it to one inning.
  11. I hope it continues to go terrible, I hate the opener.
  12. Is it an awkward decisions for the Twins to start relief pitchers that can't get though the 1st without giving up runs, and still not have the "starter" make it past the 5th? Of all the things baseball has done, I hate this worse than anything else. If the Twins do this next year, I will not go to a game that isn't started by an actual starter.
  13. If Mauer comes back for one or two years, does it matter what he makes? Even if it is 15 million per, does that stop the Twins from saying anybody because of payroll size. I say No.
  14. In two years they have had one chance (last year), and didn't do it. Doesn't mean they won't in the future but....
  15. agreed, I assumed that is how it would work. If not I no longer like the idea.
  16. Maybe that is Molitor's problem, not thinking outside of the box to win games. I mean his way hasn't gotten them to .500 this year and taken a toil on the bullpen.
  17. I agree with all that (except the starting in AAA), it is just hard to understand converting him to a pitcher and then letting him go before he has a real chance to take off. I also understand after the Twins didn't put him on the 40 he got to pick the best spot for him, and I give him all the credit for picking the Giants . Just another side effect of trying to compete for the division title this year and Sano, Buxton and others crapping the bed because if the Twins were still in the race we won't be talking about losing what looks like a pretty good pitcher.
  18. So are you saying that the Giants were able to take a bubble candidate from the Twins and within a year turn him into a viable major league starting pitcher and the Twins couldn't do that (yet) with their top prospects? The Giants must have seen something in him beyond numbers to stick him directly into AAA, because IMO the Twins would have sent him back to AA.
  19. What you say is true, the question is what did the Twins miss putting him behind them, because so far he has been way better than any of them.
  20. I really like this idea for this year, really have no interest in it next year unless it is only for the 4th and 5th starter. I wouldn't mind seeing 3 pitchers for 3 innings each as well to get these young guys innings. For example: Berrios Gibson Odorizzi/Santana Michael Pineda/Stephen Gonsalves/Fernando Romero Zack Littell/Kohl Stewart/Meija
  21. Isn't that what I said, they don't need any starters that aren't top tier? If they go out and get starting pitchers they have to do something about the minor league pitchers on the 40 man. Starters expected to be on the 40 in 2019. Jose Berrios Kyle Gibson Jake Odorizzi Michael Pineda Fernando Romero Lewis Thorpe Kohl Stewart Aaron Slegers Chase De Jong Stephen Gonsalves Zack Littell Adalberto Mejia
  22. I keep seeing the Twins need another starting pitcher, which confuses me a bit. I like depth as much as the next person, but if you keep Gibson, they have Berrios and Romero, Pineda ,Odorizzi Gonzo and a bunch of prospects fighting for two spots, which as we all know means that Pineda and Odorizzi will get the first shot and probably for a while. Leaving all the guys taking up 40 man roster spots in the minors. IMO, unless they move Gibson I don't see the need for a starting pitcher, unless that starter is an established very top of the rotation guy. Which I think might require trading a few prospects.
  23. Has been been any studies about players that drop down that far in the rankings (without injuries) and still turn out? Again I like him and hope he ends up being an all star, but it seems worrisome that he probably will he will be moved down the Twins list by recently drafted player(s) and others that have been in the system.
  24. Is Gordon still a top 100 prospect and top 10 guy for the Twins starting next year? I still have high hopes for him, but it seems that maybe the Twins missed trading him at his peak value?
  25. Looks like the Twins are all in in Kimbrel next yer, they have plenty of money for it.
