  1. In mine he was rated "Super Duper" and I gave him 8 out of 10 bananas. My rating system is pretty complicated but I'm sure I have it posted around here somewhere ....
  2. Agreed. Baxendale doesn't have power stuff that profiles to be a dominant pitcher but sometimes the numbers transition up through the various league levels even without much clear reason why. Not to be callus, but Hermsen, Darnell and Dean are all poor strikeout pitchers and allow too many runners to reach. Hermsen has had some steam in the past but I think all three of these guys have gotten to the point where they are oranizational filler.
  3. That makes me feel better. I don't want the Twins to go anywhere near a HS catcher. If the Twins happened to draft Bryant, what will come of the minor league 3B situation? They'd have Sano, Bryant and Harrison, three slugging 3B prospects with questionable defense. RF is always a possiblity but 1B is probably the bigger hole. Does one of them get moved from 3B immediately? My guess is Harrison would move across the diamond to 1B immediately. The team has put a lot of time and effort into Sano's defense and it's starting to pay off. Bryant has RF experience so if they needed to move him to the OF at some point, it should not be a difficult or lengthy transition.
  4. Hicks season continues to provide some unusual statistics. Last week he was having issues with strikeouts, this week they have not been an issue, in such that, he has not whiffed once in the past six games. Also over those six games he is batting .346, yet has only one extra-base-hit (a double). Additionally in each and every game he has a lone RBI.
  5. At the time I disaggreed with pinch hitting for Hicks because Mortenson had just walked the previous two batters and if there's one thing Hicks has been good at thus far, it's taking a walk.
  6. I'm just going to assume Doumit had it in his mind that he couldn't get hurt running into the fence becuase after extra innings game, he's surely catching tomorrow. I'd prefer not to think he held up for personal reasons.
  7. Just got here. Was anyone else annoyed that Gardenhire pinch ran for Willingham? Classic Gardy move that I disagree with. In a tie game in the ninth and two outs, the odds are probably higher that Willingham's spot in the lineup will come around again then they are that the difference between Willingham's speed and Escobar's speed will create an immediate run.
  8. Are Boras and Manaea hiding injury concerns? At this point, I think I'd feel a lot better about the guy knowing that an injury IS involved. If I thought for even a minute that his performance is being made with relative health, I'd be much more worried.
  9. Or they could increase the payroll and that percentage would not be so high.
  10. Is it wrong that I hope Jeff Gray gets busted with a dead hooker in his car just so he drops a couple spots?
  11. Wow. Garret Jones is in the two hole these days? And Pittsburgh has a subway system?!
  12. I think that's TBD. Playing Devils advocate he could have chosen Mike Trout or Tyler Skaggs over Gibson. Or he could have drafted all three of them had he let Santana leave as a free agent instead of trading him for a grab bag. I agree with your points, although I always find it humorously convenient that the "right" way to build a team just so happens to be the least costly. Ryan's reliance on the youngsters is going to likely force us to withhold our opinions on the thriftyness of the Pohlads for a half decade. 2019-2021 will be when the new batch of young Twins will be hitting free agency, though hopefully the Twins will be able to sign them to extensions previous to that. Will they resign Sano or Buxton if they develop into superstars? Will they pay Alex Myers if he's the real deal even though his agent is Scott Boras and ace pitchers will all be commanding +$200M contracts by then? If the Twins way is to build through the farm, but then let the farm hands walk when they enter their prime instead of fielding a top 10 payroll, then we shall reserve the right to riot. I do fear the Twins are planning for the future using 2013 as the template for player contracts, simply because they are never at the front of these movements. They need to assume these guys will command +$200M contracts if they pan out. After all, why else would they be charging us 2020 beer prices at Target Field today?
  13. Boras whines about the new system every chance he gets. I have no doubt he will do everything he can to throw it out of whack and try to show it is ineffective.
  14. Good thing there is now an early signing deadline. Just think if Boras had something like 8 of the top 12 picks. None of them will sign until the deadline, because how is Boras going to argue that the number ten pick deserves to get paid more than the number six guy (his usual stratagy) when he is puppet master for both? Boras will now surely make sure they sign from the top down delaying all his signings. The Cubs set the market for the lower tier free agent pitchers this off-season and set the value high. They are in prime position to do it again by blowing their budget on Appel and screwing every other team picking hence by letting Boras set the signing expectations above where every other club feels comfortable.
  15. Ok, so sounds like he consensus is that we won't complain as long as it's Bryant, Stewart or Manaea.
  16. I agree. It's similar to my confusion why some people see Frazier as a better bat but would rather have Meadows simply because he has a slight chance of playing CF. If you're picking offense at #4, pick the best bat, don't qualify based on position.
  17. Can't argue with that, unless someone else thinks grabbing the 2nd best HS catcher at #4 is a good move.
  18. Jason Churchill at ESPN wrote about the 2nd tier of college pitchers. I guess he mentions Manea, Stanek and Eads. The article is summed up at MLBTR and it says that Churchill states Manea would likely be the first of the second tier to go (duh) and he could go to the Rockies at #3, the Indians at #5 or the Red Sox at #7. I'm curious why he does not think he is a possibity for the Twins at #4. Is it due to the team's track record with drafting position players, or does he know something we don't. It's an insider article and I'm not paying ESPN any more than my cable bill dictates so I don't have more info on the piece.
  19. I didn't realize I posted this on the relief pitcher page, perhaps I should move it. Thanks for the additional info. It's puzzling, I hope Churchill is just blowing smoke and guessing.

  21. Since Pelfrey has 5 years of service time, if he is DFA'd, clears waivers and refuses a minor league assignment, the Twins are on the hook for the remainder of his salary. So Pelfrey likely would refuse the assignemt. Surely no team is interested in him with his $4 million contract which they would be forced to pay if they claim him off waivers, but he likely would test the waters to see if someone will take him at a prorated portion of his contract with the Twins paying the rest.
  22. As much as I like Price, and as much as I think Price would make this team instantly legit, I would bet good money that Terry Ryan would never do this. To make this trade viable, Ryan would also have to sign Price to a long-term extension and he would never give a pitcher a contract like the one Price would require. And yes, the Twins can call up a player from any level they chose. Though rare, there has been a history of some players skipping the minors alltogether. While a Sano call-up this year is not an impossiblity, I wouldn't set the expectations too high, getting to AAA this year would even go against the grain for the Twins. Buxton almost surely won't get called up. The Twins have a track record of keeping HS drafted players in the Midwest League for an entire season regardless of production. Buxton getting to Ft. Myers this year would be a rare occurance within this organization, though I think we may be in luck with that goal actually. Thanks for the Sano updates.
  23. Yup, I understand why he got 5 starts last year, but there is depth this year. It may not be proven depth, but there are options. You'd probably want to give Walters another look first and hopefully Albers too.
  24. I like Stewert and would be fine taking the risk, but he doesn't sound quite like a Bundy or Taillon. If the Twins took him and he busted, I would fear they may be scared off from drafting another HS arm high in the draft for the foreseeable future. In other words, I'm not afraid of drafting a bust, but I'm afraid of the how the Twins would react if they do.
  25. I don't think these things are unrelated. I think the internet age has absolutely driven the immediate gratification expectation that is prelevant in our society today. As such, it has also expanded the forums in which we can voice our expectations loudly and often.
