  1. No question those two are aces, one being one of the greatest pitchers of all time. Maddox did pitch most of his career in an era of pitch-to-contact though. Regardless, we can certainly hope Gibson develops into an elite pitcher based mostly on control, but as Pseudo said, hoping for a Nolasco type career is probably what we should be assuming for a ceiling.
  2. Like many of the Miracle, Hicks has started off his 2014 season slow with a .222/.263/.250 slash. So far he only has one XBH (a double) and only 2 BB compared to 8K.
  3. I think his new mental approach has clouded his memory. Zen and the Art of Doorknob Maintenance has clearly made him forget that the Twins do not preach strikeouts.
  4. I'm not trying to be a condescending jerk, but Jason is not his first name. I wouldn't have mentioned it but I find it funny since he shares his given name with you. Even the same uncommon spelling! Or is this an inside joke I'm missing?
  5. Yeah, I hope things turn out, but high walks plus low strikeouts generally mean early season success is a mirage. I think he'll turn things around though. Doubt he'll ever become enough of a strikeout pitcher to be a #1 or even a #2 however.
  6. Nice win for the Twins, but by narrowing his parameters, he missed 2 time WS champion Al Newman. Reboulet and Hocking did pop into my mind while reading the topic of the article, but I would have never guessed Reboulet had a better WAR than Hocking.
  7. Well the platoon was previously mentioned as a positive opportunity, that post was simply my rebuttal. And while most players do hit better against opposite handed pitching, Drew's splits are dreadful. .585 against LHP last year and .567 the year before. He was much better earlier in his career. These kind of drop offs, along with a rash of injuries and increased K numbers usually signals the end of everyday contribution.
  8. So is Yormen Landa done starting, or is he going to get his opportunity later? I thought it was supposed to be a 6 man rotation, but we're now on the second go around and only five have started. I'm glad Eades pitched well, but if he doesn't figure out how to miss more bats he's never going to make a difference on the big club. Small sample size, but he's having issues striking out Appy and Midwest League guys; these batters swing at everything. Obviously it's only going to get more difficult at the higher levels.
  9. I do like the idea of getting him extended, but not until late in the season or later. I'm also not worried about him getting expensive, but if he ends up being a useful player, I do like the idea of getting him into a team friendly contract like they did with Denard Span if for no other reason than to increase his value if the team were to move him. Still plenty to prove though.
  10. I don't think his career OPS is how we should be evaluating Drew at this point though, he's clearly not the same player he was five years ago. Last year his OPS away from Fenway was .687 and the year before it was .657. It's an upgrade, but not enough of one to make much of a difference.
  11. I have a hard time seeing Ryan and company willing to pay $12 million over multiple years for a guy they know has to platoon to be effective.
  12. I could see the Twins starting the clock on May before Meyer. Still, Plefrey is on a two year deal. I have a hard time believing he doesn't get a minimum of 10 starts barring injury.
  13. Not to mention the Twins are not carefree enough with their money to give him a $15 million QO next year. He wasn't worth it this year clearly, why would he be worth it next year? He's a stopgap, not a solution. Save the pick unless he can pitch. This team's going nowhere with or without a SS who can hit at Fenway but nowhere else.
  14. You'll have to be more specific.
  15. Then they'd need another backup CF. When Arcia comes off the DL I'm sure Willingham or Kubel will need to be placed on it. Pretty sure last time I saw both run the bases I saw those ambulance chasers from TSR Law Office following them.
  16. And John promoted the article on KFAN this morning. This is making the rounds. Congrats Parker.
  17. The front office should be reading that. Exceptional control does not trump exceptional movement or velocity.
  18. I like Arcia, but that's not a ringing endorsement, and it's hardly impressive for a corner OF. I'm not high on Jackson, but still, if he's the best player you don't pass on him because Arcia had a .735 OPS last year. You probably shouldn't pass on him if Arcia had a .935 OPS either.
  19. Arcia and Hicks would likely be in one of their final years of their rookie contract by the time Jackson is ready to play, and it's not like they're proving themselves at the MLB level. You don't pass on a guy in the draft because of Aaron Hicks, that's for sure. That being said, I'm still not sold on Jackson yet and certainly don't want him at catcher. Drafting a HS catcher hasn't paid off for any team in over a decade.
  20. The trade happened after the prospect rankings, and AZ was already clearly down on Bauer. There was public squabbling about his workout and pregame routines and questions whether he would listen to management. AZ also clearly has management that prefers "grit and hustle" over natural abilities based on their past year's transactions. So I think Bauer's stock was down regardless of his prospect rankings, particularly when one considers that he was pretty much traded for Gregorius, who was not very highly ranked on most lists, if at all. In fact, I'd think most people would argue that Matt Albers, Bryan Shaw and Drew Stubbs (the other players Cleveland got in the trade) were better than Lars Anderson and Tony Sipp (the other players AZ got in the trade.) That of course would indicate AZ and Cleveland both agreed that Gregorius was a better centerpiece than Bauer. I think AZ is bat ^&*$ crazy and have no clue what they're doing currently, but that doesn't change the fact that breaking down the trade show's Bauer's value wasn't all that high.
  21. Thats true but Eades and Slegers were I think only two of ten healthy college pitchers picked in the first five rounds that didn't even make it out of rookie league. Some teams appear to not even bother putting these types of pitchers in rookie ball at all. Im not making any judgment about this strategy, but there are still comps available that indicate the Twins are still on the conversative side.
  22. I don't know that people were wrong about slow promotions, there just seems to be a shift in philosophy the last few years. Until Arcia came around I don't think any HS age draft pick was allowed to play less than a full year in the Midwest league.
  23. Are those last year's numbers for Kubel or the Handsome Soda? They both looked pretty similar.
  24. The pitching was upgraded, but it's still shakey. Good news is that Trevor Plouffe looked like Brian Dozeir from last year. The bad of course is that Dozeir looked like Plouffe from last year.
  25. I haven't been able to watch, but from the play-by-play it looks like Duensing has stopped the bleeding.
