  1. I guess I view granting them free agent status as keeping in spirit with the parameters of the 40-man, Rule V draft and option rules, wherein teams are discouraged from hoarding players in the minors. Sucks for the team, but good for the player. The team could have kept the player had they not removed him from the 40-man, it's still their perogative to do so. After getting yanked around by two teams, the player is given the opportunity to go where he best has a chance of making a 25-man, or at least making a 40-man. I think getting the best 750 baseball players at the MLB level would be best for baseball anyway.
  2. Maybe they could have a discussion about the taboo "P" word. Arcia should get full-time duty as the only true prospect OF, but Colabello and Parmelee can platoon with Kubel largely getting the bench.
  3. Funny thing is, I don't know that I would blame Anderson much for Worley. It's not like they worked together much. Worley was new to the system pitched terribly, had some DL time and was demoted to Rochester all before the end of May. Though I'm of the opinion that Anderson certainly would not have fixed what ailed Worley. He needs to go. When 90% of the pitchers you bring into the system see their K% go in the toilet, something just isn't right. And as much as I don't care for the guy, Worley is right, he didn't get much of an opportunity this spring. He was out of the running for the starter gig just about as soon as he reported to camp and then was rarely used in the pen.
  4. "Guys like Aaron Nola, Tyler Beede, Kyle Freeland, and Erick Fedde may become more serious options." With Fedde out that leaves Beede and two control pitchers. I know the Twins have scouted Nola extensively, but they need to stop. Not taking a 4-5 pitcher at #5 shouldn't need to be explained. If the Twins are left without an obvious choice at #5 and go pitcher, I'd prefer HS arms Holmes and Toussaint. I don't think they have been scouted as much as Nola has though. They've also been checking out Sean Newcomb and Sean Reid-Foley. If the team thinks they know how to correct Newcomb's high BB rate, he'd be great, but I'm not sure the Twins have a potion for that.
  5. How about if he's removed from the 40-man x amount of months after being claimed he becomes a free agent?
  6. I bet they hammer out an extension prior to the All-Star game. Goodwill and propaganda to help get your players get in the game and give fans a silver lining to a team that isn't contending.
  7. There will always be sentimental reunions if the same people run the show decade after decade after decade. I'm not saying there needs to be front office change, but those who don't want change need to realize these kinds of moves are always going to happen.
  8. Or a competent bat at the front of the bench.
  9. The Cubs do seem pretty light on young shortstops. I really want one of the top arms but it's looking unlikely now. It would be nice to get an underslot deal for a change as long as they go high upside at #2. Still, there are too many teams with 2nd picks in the competitive balance rounds that the Twins will almost certainly will not be able to grab the cream of the crop of the "sliders." Deron Johnson in person has recently been watched Aiken, Kolek, Jackson, Zimmer, Gordon, Nola, Penticost, Newcomb and Reid Foley in the last three weeks for what it's worth.
  10. The Cubs are in the same rebuild situation the Twins are in and similarly lack starting pitching. If they don't have interest in extending Samardzija, it should probably throw up a red flag that the Twins also should not.
  11. If Mauer gets in, there are going to be some accusations of favortism for the home team. Mauer's exclusion from the Target Field All-Star game was pretty close to a certainty after his move to 1B. All-Star 1B have power and drive in runs. I'm not saying Mauer won't get in, but if he does, it will feel a little tainted.
  12. Well he's been with the organization for decades and seems to be among Gardy's closest friends. It's much easier for us to look at the rational side of these issues, but I think it's actually pretty easy to understand why Gardy and company don't want to part with him. I don't agree with them, but I can empathize with them.
  13. I think the biggest reason this year's lineup is scoring and the past couple years they were not is because they have a guy getting on base in the leadoff spot. Dozeir needs to stay where he is until another adaquate option develops. I also don't like that his power is being wasted as no one is getting on base, but perhaps Eduardo Escobar batting 9th will help change that. If it doesn't, I'd be more in favor of batting Suzuki and/or Pinto at the bottom of the order to get on base for Dozier. Having a hole in the 7th spot would be better than at leadoff.
  14. Who? Buxton? While the Twins certainly want to be kind to their affiliates, when it comes to their top prospects they absolutely should not be basing promotions on what's best for them. Buxton, Sano, Meyer and company are property of the Minnesota Twins, not the Fort Myers Miracle, New Britain Rock Cats or Rochester Red Wings. These guys need to be positioned to what is best for the player and the big club long term. Besides, the Twins probably should worry less about bumping attendance in Fort Myers and more about bumping the attendance at Target Field.
  15. Yes, very strange. It wouldn't look to be performance related. He pitched very well for E-ton last year.
  16. Those sound pretty similar to me. As much as I appreciate Suzuki's play, signing a starting C instead of a backup C who would only be expected to play 2x a week is or will hinder the opportunities for Pinto, Arcia, Parmelee and Herrmann regardless of how people feel about them. Of course at the time of the signing, we all thought the Twins WERE signing a backup C.
  17. I'm sure there will be another AAAA CF hit waivers again soon. Of course the way things are going, the Twins would likely put themselves in the position that they'd have to DFA Fuld to get him.
  18. Dozier, Plouffe and Hughes are part of the under-30 crowd for the Twins. The Twins do have vets Mauer and Perkins who can still likely help during and after the rebuild, but they just can't seem to stay away from the post-rebuild vets. Suzuki, Doumit, Pelfrey, Willingham and Correia were (laughably) win now moves. The Astros did some of that, (Crain, Feldman, Bedard) but not nearly as much as the Twins, and most importantly, only Feldman was signed to multiple years.
  19. Houston has 7 players on their 40-man over 30-years-old. The Twins have 14. I prefer the Astros approach to rebuilding even if it means they lose 100 games instead of 90.
  20. I'd say the situations are already similar in dearth of talent. CF simply also has a dearth of bodies. But is having four corpses really that much better than having one? Santana's lack of actvity also seems strange to me. You'd think they'd be using him if they were going to call him up. A middle infielder who can hit but doesn't take walks and with the athletic ability to play SS but possible mental lapses seems exactly like the kind of guy who would use up each and every one of his option years.
  21. Hicks' slow start continues but there are some positive signs. His .358 OBP matches his number from last year. His 15/16 BB/K rate is nice and over his last ten he has taken 7 BB compared to only 3K.
  22. I would suggest trade deadline deals involving moving one veteran in the last months of his contract in exchange for two players who require 40-man spots despite the fact that they were already DFA candidates may be one reason for such 40-man problems. I'm really curious which AAAA swingman and utility players the Twins will be asking for in exchange for Willingham this July.
  23. His electric stuff that fools umpires and catchers alike reminds me of Deduno. Of course Deduno seems to walk a thin line between utter dominance and complete train wreck. That line is pencil thin, I'm not sure how he stays on. Or perhaps what I mean is, I wish he would finally fall off onto the utter dominance side.
  24. I'd agree, not sure Bill Smith would though.
  25. Coached, learned or adjusted somehow, you have a better chance of improving the location of your pitches than you do of legally adding velocity. "Control" pitchers need not apply at #5. Minimum requirements are a 95 mph heater and a wipeout breaking pitch. Resumes will be extensively vetted.
