  1. If the Twins wait until August and try to pass Correia through waivers but he gets claimed by a blocking club that won't offer a thing, do they have the constitution to just let him go for the betterment of the developing young pitchers?
  2. Yeah, they are more costly and the Twins taking a full or near slot HS kid with their first pick three years in a row can hurt your chances of getting HS kids leter in the draft. Still, it sounds like they left 200K available money on the table. Maybe the HS kids they did draft later weren't worth that money, but that tells me they should have drafted some that were, like guys who went in the first 10 rounds. Also for the record, Gordon wasn't my choice at #5, but I like what I've seen and heard about him much more than the author. I think the odds are good that he is one of the top 5 players from this draft. With Max Murphy being #1 of course.
  3. When? When is an assumption, IF is the word you are looking for. I'm not advocating for Ryan to go, at least I haven't in this thread. The implication from the previous poster was that if the Twins replaced Ryan, the new GM would have only about a 50/50 shot at improving the team. If that was in fact the case, I like those odds as I don't know that I'd give current leadership the same spread. And again, I'm not saying a new regime would do better, those were the numbers provided by the previous poster.
  4. Suzuki is the obvoius name, so I'm going to have fun and say Eduardo Nunez, to Toronto, for pitcher Matt Boyd. With the candlestick.
  5. He contridicted himself a ton last offseason when he was reporting that the Twins had no interest in pitcher X followed days later that the Twins were in fact meeting with pitcher X. But to be fair, it might not be Doogie who needs to make up his mind but the club. After reports that the Twins had no interest, someone in the organization may have said, "Are you %&*#ing kidding me, splurge for a damn plane ticket and hotel room."
  6. Great article about Gordon and Murphy. I hope Gordon is better than your run-of-the-mill SS but I also wasn't happy with the low ceiling approach to the draft. Finding a 2-3 regulars or one star would make any draft class a roaring success, but I think you need to take more risk on upside and that means drafting and signing more than 4 HS kids.
  7. If the odds are about 50/50 that a new GM would turn this thing around, I would, and the ownership should, jump all over that.
  8. The options shouldn't be a factor at all. If the Twins need to consider using an option for Meyer when he's 29, it's probably safe to assume things didn't turn out the way we hoped.
  9. I would hope it was a double and then a throwing error. That would be some favorable hometown score keeping if it was considered a HR.
  10. Great article, but I have to take issue with one thing. No way Canada's airforce is capable of stopping a baseball, aircraft, missle or waterfowl. The only way they would stop it is if the baseball had a DUI and then tried to get into the country through customs.
  11. Come on Twins be smart about this. Don't overpay for a career year, how many times do you have to learn that one? They so rarely hit the free agent jackpot and this year they may have, do the right thing, don't kowtow to Gardy and the pitchers. They may think Suzuki is a godsend and his production will last, but wiser minds know he will almost certainly not be worth the years or the money, likely starting next season.
  12. The Twins have gone with a AAA rotation quite often. Like all of 2013. Also, all of 2012.
  13. Nix's camp isn't completely without fault, after all, Aiken and Nix share the same "advisor" Casey Close. Close knew advising Aiken to turn down the offer would mean Nix would not get signed. The Astros did offer Aiken $5 million, which was well under slot value, however, only the top three slots this year were valued at $5 million or more, which means unless the slots are significantly bumped next year, Aiken will need to be a top 3 pick again to top the $5 million offer, and at this time the Astros will hold at least one of those picks, quite possibly two. The Astros screwed both players, but Close is not totally without blame and it's very unlikely Aiken tops the Astros offer unless he somehow gets awarded free agent status. I doubt that would happen, but this does sound like a situation where the commisioner's office, the MLBPA and perhaps even an arbitrator come up with a solution/penalty that is not currently spelled out in the CBA.
  14. I was advocating for getting guys who don't require 40-man spots, but at least they only got one this time so I'm OK with the move. Besides, there does seem to be at least a bit of the lottery ticket feel to Pryor as opposed to the returns the Twins got for Liriano and Morneau. Probably because reports of 96 MPH fastballs generally imply "potential," where as 89 MPH fastballs imply "same old BS."
  15. Well many of us were thinking this should have happened originally, but WOW! We knew it was smoke and mirrors, but talk about no rope! Before last night he'd only given up one ER in his last 8 innings. He'd never given up multiple ER in the same game until yesterday. I'm happy for the move, but this is not a traditional Twins move. Maybe something else is going on behind the scenes.
  16. It's not so much whether they did or did not offer the 200K to one of the HS kids drafted very low, it's that they drafted a bunch of college relievers early instead of getting another high upside HS kid in the top 10. Out of 40 selections it looks like the Twins drafted and signed only 4 HS players? That seems like a pretty poor stratification from the talent pool, when they had the means to do better.
  17. So when are we going to start talking about the Twins continual rotation of Pino, Johnson and Darnell on and off the 25 man to keep the extra bench bat? I don't remember a team doing this for so long, it's been about a month now. I like the idea; even if it's been done to some degree before, the continuation of the moves is to somewhat innovative. Of course at the same time the players are getting jerked around and Rochester is getting snookered. Also, most of us would prefer May and Meyer were involved in this shell game.
  18. But because he's a reliever, these attributes are greatly muted. Closers only pitch one inning at a time and most of the time you can even give up at least one run and STILL get the job done. When Perkins stole Capps job in 2012, Capps had actually only failed to hold the lead one time in 29 games finished compared to Perkins four failures in 36 games finished. Perkins was clearly the better pitcher, but in the grand scheme of things, it didn't matter. It rarely does. The Twins won't trade Perkins, and it probably is wise from the PR standpoint, but dominant relievers are a luxery and not used enough to make much of a difference anyway.
  19. Yes. 1000 times yes. No more filler is needed, this team needs to clear 40-man space, not add to it. I'd rather just DFA Correia than take back another Pedro Hernandez or Kris Johnson. Any AAAA filler taken back will just take the spot that should got to Meyer, who should be in the rotation now no matter if he still has some rough edges.
  20. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/johnsra05.shtml But I agree, waiting this long isn't doing the player or the game any favors. I am more interested in SABR type stats these days, but I love baseball history. There wouldn't be many 3K hitters, 500 HR sluggers and 300 win pitchers if teams made their players wait until they were a polished 25-year-old to play in the majors. To be fair, the Twins don't seem to require the same amount of polish for hitters as they do pitchers, but their seeming insistance that Gibson, May and Meyer have to rub off all their rough edges before they can debut is frustrating.
  21. Bert probably would have had TJ surgery in 1982 had the procedure been as common place as it is today. Still I agree that the extra starter probably comes at the expense of a bench player and not a bullpen arm as adding a sixth pitcher most likely means adding one more below average starter and not an ace. Below average arms generally are the ones who require an early entrance for the bullpen.
  22. He may throw too hard for this club.
  23. Yes, it does tell us it's a case of bad luck. It also tells us that that the ER is a poor indicator of whether the save will be converted. If the number of games you are going to lose with Kimbrel, Cishek, Perkins, Nathan, Rauch or whoever is only going to very between 1-5 and all indicators show that the counting stats are poor predictors for this number of blown stats, than the fancy numbers are barely better than window dressing. If blowing saves comes down to degrees of luck, the closer should naturally be expendable.
  24. The issue with this stat is that we are testing for the effect without knowing the cause. We can get results, but they don't tell us why they occur. We can only presume the answer is "because of the catcher." The test question we want to ask is "How many balls/strikes did the catcher influence" but in actuality, the question we are asking in studying this metric is "How many balls/strikes did the umpire get wrong."
  25. So I should assume the bit about Garver dropping bombs was a bit more colorful before the radio edit?
