  1. I don't disagree, the Twins screwed the pooch on those two extensions. But both were younger and better players at more premium positions. They were also part of teams that were trying to maintain their current winning tradition. A lot can change in six years. A few 2B from 2008 were still productive last year, but probably only Cano, Kinsler and Pedroia (depending on how much you like dirty uniforms) you'd still want to pay starter money today. The 2008 2B WAR leader board: Chase Utley Dustin Pedroia Ian Kinsler Brian Roberts Dan Uggla Mark DeRosa Mark Ellis Brandon Phillips Marco Scutaro Placido Polanco Akinori Iwamura Kelly Johnson Rickie Weeks Jose Lopez Freddy Sanchez Felipe Lopez Robinson Cano I really like Dozier, but he doesn't seem elite like Utley, Kinsler, Pedroia, Cano and even Phillips did back in 2008. He seems really solid with some great flashes, more like Scutaro, Ellis, Uggla, Weeks, Johnson and of course Mark DeRosa.
  2. Oof, a six year extension is a long time. It seems to me middle infielders decline a lot faster than corner posiiton players. Not sure I want to pay a 33-year-old starting kind of money. If the Twins buy additional years, I really hope they are vesting options based on health and plate appearances, with how the Twins prospect tree looks, and the volitile nature of middle infielders, it wouldn't take a whole lot for Dozier to become a platoon/bench player in a few years.
  3. Didn't the Twins kind of break these rules when they sniped Sano from the Pirates?
  4. Good for Curt. I disagree with most of what he says but nice work on this one. At some point social media vigilantism will probably go too far, but I'm fine with these dirtbags getting what's coming to them. Is it just me or is Deadspin kicking Twitter kind of like watching the Cowboys beating the Packers? Both are 99% BS and phony as hell so while I'm glad the lesser of the two evils came out on top, I'd prefer they both just disappeared.
  5. Call me old school, but I still think catching flies with chopsticks is the most superior way of measuring quickness.
  6. Are there other people to care about? I'm just looking out for you guys and gals.
  7. Or they could just go way over and put a big fat check mark in the happy column of their PR worksheet.
  8. Yeah, this would indicate we'll still be arguing over "old school" and "SABR" evaluations for a couple more decades.
  9. Fantastic, if this is true, they almost certainly plan on going way over the bonus pool. Can we get lucky enough that the Twins take their turn with the loophole and then it's closed forever by the international draft, leveling the playing field for every team and negating the Twin's repurcussions for going over their allotment in 2015? It doesn't sound like something that normally would work out for the Twins, but maybe, just this one time....
  10. 3B has become a position of scarcity these days. Plenty of teams employe a 3B that hits like a 2B used to. If Plouffe is still above average and plays good defense, you have to sell high on him. But not until next off season. The team still has to see Sano perform well, AAA numbers or even two months in the majors isn't going to be enough. If all looks good by the end of the year, and Plouffe has value, let the bidding start. I wouldn't wait until into 2016 though, as Plouffe's value will drop a ton if he starts being considered a corner OF. Also you'll get the internal issue of playing the likely superior defender out of position just to get the young guy reps at 3B. That doesn't always go over well with some folks.
  11. Dave Stewart of course is AZ's new GM and I still remember my mom giggling like a school girl when Billy Beane came up to bat, she thought he had such a silly name. Nolan Ryan was president of Baseball Operations.
  12. Dang, just want to see if I could play MadLibs with that quote. My new name seemed to fit until the part in parentheses.
  13. I'd actually argue it's pretty unbalanced in his favor, simply anti-comments always just stand out more, for any topic really. Some people resent the unemotional Minnesota demean it's, plenty disagree with his paycheck, but I think by and large he is still widely supported. I think he has a big year this season myself.
  14. The odds they end up better than Buehrle are low, but they aren't competing against Buerhle for the fith spot. The odds of their career being better than Milone is high, very high. I think you're confusing sustained success with a flash in the pan. Someone with sustained success doesn't get traded for Sam Fuld. He was a product of a gigantic foul territory and with his weak stuff has absolutely no margin for error. Fortunately the Twins front office appears not to be fooled.
  15. I didn't want any more players over 30, but there's no one to block in the OF at this time except for maybe Schaffer, so I don't much care about his actual production and I could care less about his paycheck. Charisma goes a long way, if the front office and the players themselves think Hunter will improve the clubhouse atmosphere and/or instill leadership skills in the youngsters, he probably will. It's basic self-fullfilling prophecy stuff. I'd feel the same if everyone was brainwashed and thought Danny Valencia and Delmon Young would improve the clubhouse atmosphere and improve leadership skills. MY thoughts on Hunter, his skills or his views don't matter.
  16. That's true, but I think hedging one's bets to fend off criticism years off does the analysis injustice. Besides, the abilities between SS and 2B probably are less than we like to think and certainly arbitrary. I'd guess Brian Dozier's defense at SS would be better than Asdrubal Cabrera's yet any scout who said Dozier had a chance to stick at SS but Cabrera didn't would be wrong I guess.
  17. Fangraphs certainly seems to have an affinity for Arcia. I hope it's a good omen.
  18. Plus Aiken throws harder with good command. Just realized that if you invert the W, Walker Buehler is an anagram for Le Mark Buehrle. Surely the Twins are interested in Buehrle's French mirror image, just as they've always had interest in the original. I hope they go another route.
  19. That's absolutely true. Still, I don't want to go out and get defensive-minded corner outfielders simply as a band-aid for the terrible pitching. The terrible pitching will have to be fixed regardless of the outfield defense before this club is poised to win again.
  20. It's because his defensive decline matches up with his move to Conerica. If we like UZR, it was +14 his final season with the Angels. I don't think he's a good defender, but I don't think he's nearly the worst, there are plenty of less athletic corner OFs out there and they wouldn't have nearly the instincts and experience. Below average? Probably. One of the worst? No.
  21. People are really buying into the metrics that say Hunter was worse in the field than all of those players last year? I doubt it. Maybe they'd be more reliable if all the players played in the same stadium and played under the same defensive preferences of the same manager.
  22. I've taken my kids to opening day every year since they were born and the best seat I've had for those (hair raising) experiences was in the last row of the section. I didn't have to worry about standing and blocking anyone plus it was easy access to the concourse. If you're daughter is anything like my kids, you'll be lucky if she sits still long enough to enjoy your seat for most of the game, I generally end up walking the concourse anyway. Luckily, you have a view of the field from most spots just walking around.
  23. Well not defensive metrics. Everyone seems to forget that he was a pretty reliable bat last year. Last ten years really.
  24. As long as it stays in the bullpen, I'm optimistic.
  25. Ah the sage advice from the great Deolis Guerra. I assume his changed change up was organizationally approved? Or could that be a contributing factor to the possible friction alluded to by the "clean slate" comment in the article?
